Thanks very much for that description of Blantyre Gilly. I'm printing it so I can add it to my files of information on places of importance in my family tree. Did I mention before that I've traced one line of ancestors back to the 1670s? That's a Scottish line, most of my ancestors from two or three generations back came from Ireland.

I've always thought of clarty as an Edinburgh word. Clarty is an adjective but there is also the noun "clart", being a person who is clarty. Clarty is easily translated as "dirty" but I can't think of an alternative word for clart.

Bing is another lovely word, admittedly for something that isn't lovely, that I never hear outside of Scotland. In the sixties many school playgrounds, including mine, had areas covered over with the spent shale from the bings. What the hell were they thinking? It shredded your knees and elbows when you fell over playing football. Some of the bings near Bathgate have been designated industrial heritage sites.

How did your Welsh and Scottish grandparents get on? Did they ever meet? When I got married in Bathgate in the seventies there was a large Welsh group and a large Scottish group. My new wife and I were the only experienced interpreters! Still, once the drinks were in and the dancing started nobody cared.
