Subject: Michael Jackson

I'm watching the TV reports as I type, just after midnight in the UK. Michael Jackson dead? It doesn't seem real. He was the turbo-powered singing and dancing laddie with the Jackson Five on the telly when I was a laddie, then he thrilled us with "Thriller" when I was a student, and he was in the film "Moonwalker" that I took my weans to see in the 80s.

He was a year younger than me, gearing up for a fifty-concert marathon in London starting next month. I got a buzz from his apparent disregard for the critics' comments that he was getting too long in the tooth for such a demanding schedule.

He was controversial, bizarre, tragic, deluded, but enormously talented. A mesmerising entertainer.

I often feel cynical about outpourings of grief when celebrities die, but this news really hurt.

BB
