Okay, I skimmed over this since I try to remain spoiler-free, but I have a few comments below.

>But am I seeing things? Am I the only one that sees
>quite a bit of similarity between Darla and Spike's
>development this year?

You are not the only person to see this. I see it too. In fact I've been seeing this since last year. if there is one thing that Angel desperately needs is someone, anyone to tell him that he is not so darn special because he has a soul. If crossovers could occur, Angel would have this confrontation with Spike. I want this confrontation, by the way. Since there is a no crossovers rule, we need a vamp on AtS who is not comepletely good and not completely bad, yet different from Angel. Dru's too crazy unless they dope her up on some mental drugs. Harmony, I would love for her to get some retribution for the faithless treatment she got from the A.I. team in Disharmony, is too weak-willed at the moment to make the change. So, the only vamp to refute Angel's "specialness" is Darla. Whether the writers will take this route, I don't know.

>Maybe this season of ANGEL is about getting what
>you've been denied all of your life, because last
>season was in a way about being denied every chance
>offered to you, at least in Angel and Darla's cases.

That's an interesting theory, Blue. I would also say that AtS' theme for this year is as I have said before, learning how to love again, and finding your path in life. I've always found it interesting that the writers chose to give Darla a history based episode. Granted, it was to give us a view of how Darla would react in The Trial upon hearing her next death and learning how to deal with it, but still...something bugs me. Maybe it is because we were supposed to sympathize with her all along. We know she would do nasty things, but we would know the *root* of the actions.

With Lindsey, a character who has been set on the right path in Dead End, we knew that his story of having a dirt poor father gave him the incentive to become the best, andget the best, at the cost of his humanity. Darla, in a flashback, we see in Dear Boy kills a man who was dickering over the price of a "john" as well as a prostitute. This gives us a clue to what will be rvealed two eps later that darla is a prostitute. From this we know that darla will have an innate distrust of men.

The flashbacks on AtS, I have found, are good at giving us foreshadowing. After all Dru's "I could be your mummy." line is famous for the revelation at the end of The Trial. The only flashback we've seen so far was in hearthrob where Angelus says to Darla,"You're full of surprises." She repeats this later on just before we see her walk away, very pregnant. Within the same flashback, Holtz threatens Angelus to tell him where Darla is located, Angelus caves. Now, what does this mean for the future? Well, I'm thinking that the next time Holtz comes around demanding Darla, Angel will not cave in.

Throughout Hearthrob, Angel was told that he did not know how to love. Well, this year, we will probably see him learning to love again, and not just in a friendship way. Maybe he will learn how to love like a parent, an ex-husband and maybe as a current lover.

For the longest time, Angel felt that he couldn't love again, he couldn't have a life, he couldn't have kids. Guess what? He has a life with the A.I. team. He is going to have a child, if the writers keep him as the baby's father. He will most certainly learn to love again by the end of this season.

Wow, long ramble.
