Hi There.

Served at machrihanish in the 80's.
Originally a navy base, taken over by the RAF I dont know when.
During the 1970's the base was earmarked for use as a FOB for P3 orions, should WW3 ever happen. For this purpose, the bomb dump was filled with Nuclear depth charges for use by the USNavy, this was evident by the detachment of US Marines used to guard the inner perimeter, as at RAF St Mawgan in Cornwall.
Take it then , that when the marines left, so did the bombs. The seals remained, and they practiced parachuting and deployments in fast attack craft. The base was then used for excercises and training occasionally torpedo trials. NO AIRCRAFT WERE STATIONED THERE.
The single accomodation and the control tower were in appalling condition, and its no surprise that money was spent on them. The funding was primarily NATO, because of its use as a reinfocement point for maritime aircraft.
Air ambulance flights arrived at all hours. I know, I used to have to open the tower up.
The Aurora is the name for the canadian maritime patrol aircraft.
The early 90's were marked by huge cuts in defence, and the RAF was cut from 90'000 to 52'000 men in about 5 years. I know, I was one of them.
Lots of beer drunk, good time had by all, but no secret planes!! Sorry.
