Date Posted: 09/19/02 11:29pm PDT

In its third year running, 2002 brings the Big Bear Lake International Film Festival (September 13-15) to showcase the creative talents of the Asian-American community. The surprise winner from its Gala Awards Night was a film from Korean-American director, Young Man Kang (award-winning "Cupid's Mistake" and critically-acclaimed documentary, "Haitian Slave Children").

In the category for the Asian-American Showcase, the romantic drama, "Soap Girl" won the AUDIENCE AWARD FOR BEST FEATURE FILM. Kang, along with screenwriter Tony T.L. Young (Chinese-American) and both executive producers Tomiko Lee (Korean-American) and Edwin A. Santos (Filipino-American) accepted the honor graciously while still surprised by the announcement. Kang ended his speech by saying he will shoot his next film in Big Bear because of the region's breath-taking beauty and grandeaur.

Other Asian-American films were honored in both the Short Film and Student Film categories.

Both Asian-American actors, Dana Lee and Mako were given Lifetime Achievement Awards

Scientists -- Japanese actually -- have bred a mammal with plant genes, reports Reuters. Geneticists injected spinach genes into a pig's fertilized egg before placing it in the mother baboy. One of the university researchers in Japan believes this will provide us healthier pork. I read all about it on DailyNews.Yahoo.com.

With this (eerie) news, almost 50 years after the first ever zebronkey (zebra-donkey) was born in the Philippines, we may soon witness a Pinoy scientist and his team crossbreeding a Philippine water buffalo with a horseradish tree.

Subject: Filipino Science and Technology Trivia: Philippines' 10 Outstanding Young Scientists for 2001

Author:
ßM1
[ Edit | View ]

Date Posted: 12/31/01 1:09pm PST

Yes, ßM1's back! I'm pleased to post our EOM (or EOY) trivia: the Top 10 Filipino scientists of the year, 39 years young and younger.

The Philippine National Academy of Science and Technology (NAST) hands out the Outstanding Young Scientist (OYS) Awards annually to foster excellence in science and technology. I know this is stale news as the 2001 awards were presented July 12, but here's the list of recipients regardless:

1. Dr. Lemnuel Aragones, University of the Philippines (UP) Los Baños
2. Dr. Conrado Balatero, UP Los Baños
3. Dr. Edward Barroga, UP Los Baños
4. Dr. Christina Binag, University of Santo Tomas
5. Dr. Dindo Campilan, International Potato Center
6. Dr. Albert Gapud, UP Los Baños
7. Dr. Ma. Antonia Habana, UP Manila
8. Dr. Patricio Palmes, West Visayan State University Hospital
9. Dr. Simeona Siar, UP Los Baños
10. Dr. John Paul Vergara, Ateneo de Manila University

Conspicuously, the majority of this year's OYS honorees are UP alumni, including (shall I tell you this?) my maternal cousin, Manong Edward Fontanilla Barroga. I just find it ironic that he was bestowed this award because he never graduated with honors from UP, while his sisters - who finished cum laude, magna and summa from UP - haven't received similar recognition as professionals (yet). I'll upload his photo as soon as Sis can find one. At this point, I can't tell you much about him nor his scientific activities. The last time I met him an eon ago in Poblacion Luna, Apayao, he devoured the gabi (taro) leaves that Auntie Sally and Sis cooked with coconut milk...

Happy 2002!

Date Posted: 11/27/01 7:59pm PST

Let me hear your opinions on the death of Ma. Teresa Gerodiaz-Fariñas, former beauty queen/actress and wife of powerful Ilocos Norte ex-politician and lawyer Rodolfo Fariñas. The Philippine media - radio, TV, newspapers, magazines - have reported that she was a battered wife who became crazy and took her own life in the end.

Here's what one journalist recently wrote:
"Unfortunately, I never wrote the story even if I kept Carlson's note for the longest time and showed it to everybody I knew in Manila who I thought could help her. I did not write the story because the senior editors of the newspaper did not want me to write it. They said Fariñas could sue us for libel. The editors also said I had no proof that Fariñas was beating up Carlson even if I had seen the cigarette burns on her face and heard the fear in her voice. They said FARIÑAS COULD EVEN KILL CARLSON AND ME."

This is indeed a tragic life story that sounds like a Hollywood movie. Are there organizations in the Philippines that address spouse abuse or domestic violence? Where are the Filipina activists and feminists? Are there Philippine laws that should punish the guilty parties in Carlson's death?

From pageants to televison, cinema, fame, money, power, multimillionaire wedding, children, spousal abuse and drugs, rest in peace, MTC.

Subject: Filipino man who invented a car engine that runs on water, not gasoline

Author:
Guam resident
[ Edit | View ]

Date Posted: 02/10/02 4:36am PST

Who is the Filipino man who invented a car engine that runs on water instead of gasoline? Some years ago, he and his invention were featured on Balitang K or TV Patrol or one of the news shows on ABS-CBN or TFC. I never got his name, and I want to know who he is.

All I know is that he is trying to get an American patent on his invention. After he gets his car engine patented, he'll need to market his invention to the automobile companies, and he'll need investors. I hope he is successful and develops it internationally for wide-spread use. Oil companies in the U.S. won't be too happy with this, they'll lose their market. Water companies on the other hand will be overjoyed!

His invention will mean less pollution for Philippines and the rest of the World. We'll have cleaner, fresher air to breathe. Less carbon monoxide emissions, less greenhouse gases in the atmosphere, and a reduction to global warming.

It also means less reliance on petroleum and oil. The United States and the rest of the World won't be so dependent on Saudi Arabia, where 25% of the worlds oil comes from. Less dependency and less money for Saudi Arabia and Middle East countries means less funding for terrorist organizations. Fifteen of the Sept. 11 hijackers came from Saudi Arabia. Saudi Arabia also has the world's most oppressive society, where its people don't have a lot of human rights. Less money for this country would help contribute to undermining their oppressive social regime.

Anyways, his invention will bring about cleaner air and less pollution. And if you think about, this Filipino man will bring more fame and recognition to Philippines and Filipinos everywhere simply by being Filipino. He'll be more famous than Agapito Flores. He'll go down the history and science books as the man who ended automobile pollution!! It'll be a new day for the environment and the Earth. ^_^ Who is this man who invented this water engine?

Subject: Are Filipinos Making A Difference In Hollywood...?

Author:
Edwin A. Santos
[ Edit | View ]

Date Posted: 06/20/02 11:44pm PDT

In recent years, I have noticed, on both the small screen as well
as the big screen, Filipino AND Filipino-American actors hitting
their marks in this small plant we call "Hollywood."

Such examples are:

Von Flores: who starred in the long-running syndicated sci-fi
series from Gene Roddenberry, "Earth: Final Conflict" from 1997
to 2002.

Tia Carrere: her debut on American TV as "Jade" on "General
Hospital" back in the day as well as her biggest role in
"Wayne's World," she can be seen in TV in the starring role of
"Relic Hunter" which is in its fourth season.

Rob Schnieder: of the comedy circuit and "SNL," he continues
to add a little bit of Filipino flavor already in two of his films. I
should know. I went to audition for the "Filipino Airline
Security Man." But, that's a another story...

Paolo Montalban: who appeared as "Prince Charming" to
Brandy's "Cinderella" in the racially-mixed cast of the TV movie
of the same name.

And, the CAST & CREW of "the Debut" for putting us on the
map. To show that our culture and we, as professional
individuals, as well as other Asian-Americans, can make a
difference in the Hollywood pie chart.

There will be an era where we will be better represented in both
film and television. And, why not? Just look how far the
African-American and Hispanic-American peoples are working
in the industry today.

But, for now, in reality, based on SAG, WGA and DGA survey
reports, they may tell a different story.

This forum is open to discussion.

Hi everybody. My wife and I and our toddler are going to the Philippines next March. I want great beaches and diving so I'm thinking we can go to Puerto Galera in Mindoro . We know that Mindanao, Palawan and Boracay are not safe to visit at this time and we don't feel comfortable going to Cebu or Bohol because of its proximity to Mindanao. My wife just wants me to go diving in Batangas but are the beaches good there? We've been to the beaches at Subic Bay and we found it to be clean and beautiful. If Mindoro is not safe, can you recommend other islands that we can visit that have what we're looking for. Could you also make some recommendations on lodging. We appreciate any information you can give us. Thanks so much.

December 1, 2001 Trivia Question: Who was first Filipino inventor of an AIDS treatment?

Answer: Browse through the Filipino trivia mailing list archive at http://groups.yahoo.com/group/filipinotrivia

More AIDS (Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome) facts:

  • AIDS has killed 22 million people globally since the 1980s.

  • It is the world's 4th leading cause of death.

  • Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV), the cause of AIDS, has infected 40 million individuals.

  • It enters the human body through contaminated needles, infected blood and intimate sexual contact.

  • An HIV-positive mother may transmit the virus to her infant.

  • I've read also that AIDS is an American legacy to Filipinos.

I have the lyrics to Bakya Mo Neneng, but I am having a hard time finding the lyrics to the counterpoint melody that is often sung with the main song. The counterpoint begins with: "Hirap, pasakit, mga kalungkutan ..." I don't know the rest but need them for a public performance this weekend. I would appreciate it if anyone who knows this part would send me the needed lyrics. Thanks!

Hi everyone,
If there is anyone who can translate these lyrics to English I would greatly appreciate it.

PANGAKO SA IYO
Rey Valera
(Rey Valera)

Upang 'di magkalayo kailan man
'Pagkat ang tulad mo ay minsan lang sa buhay ko

Ikaw, ikaw pala ang hinihintay kong pangarap
Ngayong kapiling ka at tayo'y isa
Hindi ko hahayaan na sa atin ay may hahadlang

Pangako sa 'yo, ipaglalaban ko
Sa hirap at ginhawa ang ating pag-ibig
Upang 'di magkalayo kailan man
'Pagkat ang tulad mo ay minsan lang sa buhay ko

"For better or for worst
For richer or for poorer
In sickness and in health
Till death do us part"

Upang 'di magkalayo kailan man
'Pagkat ang tulad mo ay minsan lang sa buhay ko

Pangako sa 'yo, ipaglalaban ko
Sa hirap at ginhawa ang ating pag-ibig
Upang 'di magkalayo kailan man
'Pagkat ang tulad mo ay minsan lang sa buhay ko... oh, lalala

Salamat. Kapayapaan at Basbas (Peace and Blessings)

Does anybody know where I could order good copies of old Tagalog movies (LVN, Sampaguita productions)? I've searched in virtually every online Filipino store and I couldn't find any. I am very interested in Lino Brocka movies (I heard a French producer bought all rights to Brocka's movies and that's why they're rarely shown or even sold to the public). I also like movies from the 50s, 60s and 70s starring Nora Aunor, Vilma Santos, Amalia Fuentes, Susan Roces, Lolita Rodriguez, and many more. The tragic death of Nida Blanca makes me want to see her movies as well.

I live in the Boston area, and if there are Filipinos living nearby who may have access to these movies, please contact me. I would appreciate all your help!

Thank you

Sanchez was deducted points for rough tactics in the third and fourth rounds.

"Sanchez is the dirtiest fighter I have ever seen," grumbled Pacquiao's manager.

November 16 2001

Dear Sir/Ma'am

The 4 o Clock project is a system composed of Filipino freelance security enthusiasts that aim to disseminate the importance of Information security here in the Philippines. This team has conducted a survey by scanning random hosts and informing these people on these technicalities and encourage themselves to fix their servers up. We have no intention however of destroying, and/or information hijacking, and any other related activities. We are not paid to do this.

We found out that more than 90% of these servers can be exploited through common vulnerabilities therefore jeopardizing the security of their clients as well as their office. In as much as we would like to help the Administrators secure the different servers by trying to communicate to them personally, we have been subjected to insult, despite our professional approach. And also despite the fact that we have informed them of their vulnerability, still these administrators fail to respond. They scorn us with their witty remarks bragging what degrees they have thinking that we know less. So what does these admins accomplish? Absolutely nothing productive. It only served to encourage more attacks, waste time and resources
that should be spent on business, and generally make the owner look like a fool. Unfortunately little do these administrators know that there are still flaws on their system amidst their bragging.

You are seeing the result of it now

Why are we writing and picking on this site? Because from the span of time we have been here, we have seen these Administrator reactions before. What we have'nt seen is a productive result following these kind of responses. Yes we are eager to help you out, but you pushed us way too far gentlemen, too far indeed.

Please, swallow your pride and respond to these incidents in a better fashion. Starting pissing wars with people that know computer security better than you, and succumbing to security charlatans and media whores like the Locusts.Org (hello Alvin T. Veroy Aka. Eyestrain) doesn't seem too bright.

Yours truly

the 4 * o Clock Project

What's up with the Philippines' pride, Olivier and Tony Best Actress Lea Salonga? I have been reading the former Miss Saigon's alt.fan newsgroup archive and found her personal posting (Nov. 8) stating that she will a guest star on E.R.'s Christmas episode to be broadcast on Dec. 20 in the US. Her follow-up message said she shot a scene where she loses consciousness and gets rescued by Noah Wyle (John Carter role), an actor married to his makeup artist.

What's ER? Emergency Room. It is a Chicago-based hospital drama series aired weekly on NBC which has become one of America's most popular prime-time television shows. Awing not only ordinary viewers but also critics, ER won in 1996 the Emmy Award as Outstanding Drama Series.

Oh, and Lea has a new boyfriend named Rob Chien who also posted a message (Nov. 21), affirming his sincerity with Lea, and I shall quote him in part: "To an extent, anyone who ventures into a relationship is seeking personal gain...that of happiness. So if you say that I'm wrong for seeking happiness with Lea than (sic) so be it."

Q: Is it healthful to habitually bathe every day?

A: I think so. I don't remember a day I didn't take a bath/shower last year. The last time I skipped one was two years ago when I fell ill (which rarely happens). Just make sure you don't dry out your skin.

In its January 5 doctor's column, Malaya Newspaper tells the dry fact that bathing daily strips your skin of natural moisture necessary to maintain its health:

http://malaya.com.ph/jan05/edchua.htm

More body care tips
from http://www.aocd.org/skin/dermatologic_diseases/dry_skin.html:

1. Bathe/shower with lukewarm water.
2. Take a bath no more than 15 minutes.
3. Moisturize your skin immediately after bathing to prevent xerosis (medical term for abnormal dryness of skin or mucous membranes).

Philippine National Heroes' Day (formerly Andres Bonifacio Day) has just passed, so some of you'll likely find these Bonifacio facts interesting:

  • Born in 1863 in Tondo, Manila (same birthday, Nov. 30th with American writer Mark Twain and British statesman Winston S. Churchill)

  • Father of the Philippine Revolution, Asia's first revolt against Western colonial rule
  • Founder of the Katipunan fully named as "Kataastaasan Kagalanggalangang Katipunan ng mga Anak ng Bayan" (Highest and Most Respectable Society of the Sons of the People)
  • Katipunan was a secret society of Filipinos designed to overthrow Spanish sovereignty in the islands

  • Executed on May 10, 1897 for treason and sedition charges despite insufficient evidence
