I saw Jasmine just the other day on American Idol. She did a great job. She Has a strong voice and I'm not surprise if she goes all the way. I am a big fan! She got looks as well as talent! I mean look at her, she is very attractive. By the way I heard besides her great singing, she can also dance and play the piano. The judges even enjoy her music. In the long run I know that she will make them love her. Not only for her singing but for a person!
I am very proud of her!

Subject: Poverty is a twin of terrorism?

Author:
Soldier
[ Edit | View ]

Date Posted: 02/ 5/02 11:54pm PST

Prez Gloria said in many fora that poverty is related to terrorism. For me, this is a very confusing and debatable pronouncement by a prez with high IQ, and a doctor in Economics!

If one thinks of the members of the 19 terrorists that collaborated to attack on 9-11, fifteen of them were Saudis. Saudis enjoy a very healthy economy, and they benefit from a very high per capita income from petrodollars.

The terrorist attackers in Israel are members of the Hamas group that enjoy a very good source of livelihood. The Egyptian Islamic Jihad and Abu Nidal Organization, the Islamic Movement of Uzbekistan, the Hizballah of Syria and Iran, benefit from financial support from some Middle Eastern nations that are against Israel and western way of life.

The Al Qaeda enjoys the financial support of its multimillionaire leader Osama Bin Laden and private citizens from Middle Eastern nations.

Osama Bin Laden also financially supports the Abu Sayyaf members, and also they received multimillion-peso income from ransom payments.

So where is the poverty relation with terrorism here? In my view, poverty has nothing to do with terrorism.

Terrorism is a product of ideological extremism that brainwash their members to sacrifice their lives to serve their radical visions, to kill innocent people as in the case of the 9-11 event, to get rid of Israel from Middle East, and to create hatred against freedom.

But poverty and oppression could produce and flame hatred, and abhorrence could lead to joining terrorist organizations for revenge. Could we say then that poverty is the cause of terrorism here? What then are the root-causes of poverty? Should the root causes of poverty the root causes of terrorism? Where is the end of argument?

There could be an exception, however, members of the Alex Boncayo Brigade of the CPP-NPA in RP could be one exception, with its members coming from the poor and oppressed people of the nation.

Subject: ON FILIPINOS PROTESTING THE IRAQ WAR

Author:
Teofilo Arnaiz

ON FILIPINOS PROTESTING THE IRAQ WAR

Shouldn't they be protesting something closer to home?

NOT ALL FILIPINOS love America, certainly not those who have not lived in the United States long enough to benefit from the wealth of a powerful democracy. As an immigrant who came to the U.S. nearly twenty-eight years ago, I can honestly tell you that America's streets are not paved in gold and not everyone owns a car. However, I can guarantee you that America is a land of opportunity, especially for a new legal immigrant who seeks to improve his life. Millions of foreigners want to settle in America because they have seen - in Hollywood movies, in reality shows, in popular music videos - and have heard from their friends or U.S.-based relatives - that America is not only the richest nation in the world, but also the most caring and the most diverse.

Some nights, I watch a half-hour Philippine news program in the International Channel. Last night, I happened to have watched the program and I was immediately drawn to the images of Filipinos protesting the U.S. invasion of Iraq. The images reflect those that you see in every news channel - protestors burning U.S. flags in front of an American embassy, kicking and burning an effigy of George Bush, or simply yelling anti-Yankee insults. But what was particularly different about the protesting Filipinos was that their style seemed slightly less histrionic yet aptly theatrical. You see adults coaching small children - carrying signs that they perhaps couldn't read - to behave like them. You see children pretending to be casualties of war - "struggling" to walk with crutches and "hurting" in their "wounded" heads. You see a tribal group performing a ritual consisting of dancers, equipped with bows and arrows, shooting at a cardboard replica of the American flag. Then in Manila, a group of student activists urging everyone to boycott American products and establishments all over the country, unaware that by doing so will only make the lives of many Filipinos even more miserable, especially when forty per cent of the population is below poverty level and where per capita income averages $4,000 a year, according to the 2001 report by the Central Intelligence Agency.

Filipinos were colonized by Americans for nearly fifty years (1898-1946). And when the country finally became independent, it sought to imitate American political, executive, legal and judicial values without compromising its own identity, if there ever was one. Because of their American-based system of education, most Filipinos can speak, read, write and understand English. But that's not all. Filipinos love everything American. I still have to encounter a Filipino who does not appreciate anything made in the U.S. or conceived by Americans. Filipinos are now considered the least poor minority group in America - which means that almost every Filipino is working. The Philippines owes a lot to its former colonizer; fifty-seven years after declaring its independence, the country's economy is still struggling, politics is still marred by corruption, and good education has become virtually inaccessible to millions of citizens. Now that terrorism has plagued the country, Filipinos should be pleading for American assistance more than ever before. And they should be supporting President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo with her measures to avoid retaliatory terrorist attacks.

Thus, I was a bit distressed when I saw images of Filipinos attacking the Bush War Plan. Most of these protestors were young, idealistic college students who wish to leave a mark in history without first considering the fact that the U.S. and the Philippines have a long-standing mutual defense treaty and that the Philippines receives annually tens of millions of dollars in U.S. economic aid. I wonder how far do these young Filipino protestors want to go with their boycotting of American products and businesses? I noticed that some of the protestors had baseball caps on and virtually all of them were wearing blue jeans and sneakers. I wouldn't be surprised if some of them had brushed their teeth with Colgate before going to the rallies.

Instead of attacking their greatest ally and most generous benefactor, Filipinos should be protesting the Catholic Church for rallying more people to anti-war protests (there are already so many of these protests that they have evolved into an ocean of cacophony with minute significance). The Catholic Church has a stronghold on Philippine culture, and it is good in inflicting tremendous guilt on its followers when it senses that collective guilt can further ecclesiastical causes. A few days ago, the New York Times published an article referring to the incredible population growth in the Philippines. There are approximately 80 million Filipinos now, and this number will double in less than fifty years. "The more, the merrier," said Cardinal Jaime Sin, the charismatic leader of the church. Because of this Sin-ful mentality, millions of Filipinos are either malnourished or starving, millions more live in filth and squalor, and many will experience nothing else beyond crime and poverty.

Forget Iraq, Filipinos. You see, America is not the problem. Your own people are.

What's the music hit in the Philippines?
"Ocho ocho" followed by "Pamela" and then here comes "Pito pito". I don't know about the rest of you people but these music are for idiots.

What about movies? I have TFC and once in a while I browse to see Filipino movies and what do I get? Sorry movies. "Jack en Poy", Tito, Vic & Joey, the expression "hasheshe" with a sideward fade of hand and knee is the favourite act of almost every Filipino actor. They all think they're comedians and all they can muster is "HASHESHE".

How about politics? Not too long ago people devote their youth studying for future public office. UP college of Law, Ateneo, Dela Salle University, are some institutions we can devote our education to if just to name a few. Now... If you want to run for public office all you have to do is to audition for any stupid role in any idiotic movie and the next day you can run for any public office of your choice.

These are all promoted agressively by major media establishments. They take advantage of the vulnerability of the Filipino people who have not much of a choice but to see, hear, and absorb what these giants feed us. They mostly care for their profit instead of the responsibility they have for the future of our land, our children. Yes, tender as they are and they have no intelligent choice but to hear ocho ocho, pito pito, pamela, and hasheshe whichever direction they turn their heads to.

Sincerely.

Raphael Sta. Cruz

Hi,

I'm looking for lyrics to a tagalog song and I came across this board so I thought I would give this a try.

There's a church that I go to sometimes that has a Filipino mass. And near the end of the mass, the cantor sings a Tagalog song, and I can't remember what it's called...but I only remember a small portion of the lyrics... some of the lyrics say something like: Sayo laman (not sure if words are correct--I'm bad with figuring out lyrics when someone is singing them)...................ang buhay ko..........and that's the only words that I remember.

I don't speak Tagalog--(only a few words hehe) but I do understand it. (I'm a Filipino though.) So I was wondering if you could help me.

I'M FALLIN' FOR YOU
Jamie Rivera

What is this I'm feelin'
I just can't explain
When you're near
I'm not quite the same
I try to hide it
Try not to show it
It's crazy, how could this be

I'm fallin' for you
Finally my heart gave in
And I'm fallin' in love
I've finally known
How it feels

When you said "hello"
I looked in your eyes
Suddenly I felt good inside
Is this really happening
Or am I just dreaming
I guess it's true
I can't believe

I'm fallin' for you
Finally my heart gave in
And I'm fallin' in love
I've finally known
How it feels
So this is love

It doesn't matter where I am
Thoughts of you still linger
In my mind
No matter what time of day
I'm really, really
Fallin' for you

I'm fallin' for you
Finally my heart gave in
And I'm fallin' in love
I've finally known
How it feels
So this is love

Hello!

I'm looking for suggestions regarding wedding etiquette.

My friend will be getting married in the Philippines. She lives half way around the world. Her estimated guest list is 400. For those kind enough to give gifts how do you tell them that she can't bring all those packages home? She can't afford extra luggage charges or the freight cost. There are also worries that some gifts might not pass customs (security regulations and all so strict these days).

We're at our wits end trying to figure out the best way to inform people that money would be preferable. I'm choking at the fact that anything like this should even be mentioned (verbal or written). Personally it's always been my opinion that a gift should never be expected. This is not about me however.

Would people mind if something were mentioned on the invitation? Is this considered very rude? Maybe people would take exceptions because they live so far a way? Help please!

Suggestions greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

I read an article (Abante Tonite)about how Cardinal Sin is into "politicking" again. I am so glad that there's someone like Negros Occidental Rep. Jacinto Paras who talks freely about Cardinal Sin. It's about time. Separation between the State and Church should be observed. For a long time now, Cardinal Sin is abusing his power as a leader of the Catholic church. He wants to clean up everything except his own backyard. Really, why doesn't he try to "AUDIT" his own disciples? Priests who come to the United States of America asking for donations for their own parish and then news would reach us that these priests just bought hectares and hectares of lands. I know some. I thought vow of poverty is one of the vows they have before they become a priest.
And the pedophiles...the rapists...the priests who have kept women on the side. I believe this because I was one of them...Hello Cardinal Sin...stop meddling with politicians..or maybe he wants to be a President of the Philippines, too? This Cardinal is hungry of power. ENOUGH!!!

Subject: Successful Chinese Business People in Tonga, Philippines and Asia

I found this sad story in the Nov. 27 Sydney Morning Herald (http://www.smh.com.au/news/0111/27/text/world14.html) regarding hundreds of Chinese businessmen and their families being expelled from Tonga because of their success in business. Indigenous Tongans are attacking and kidnapping them, and burning their shops out of jealousy. The news says Chinese goods are sold at cheaper prices and stores are open around the clock to ensure their good performance. On the other hand, the native-owned shops are being run inefficiently.

We must emulate these Chinese for their admirable entrepreneurial spirit. We can't deny that they are the real experts in this area. No wonder why they own the largest and most profitable businesses in big cities in the Philippines, like Manila and Cebu, as well as in other countries.

Filipino Vocabulary of the Day:

Intsik: noun (derogatory) - Chinese
Tsinoy, also Chinoy: noun - Filipino of Chinese origin
Tsinay, also Chinay: noun - Chinese Filipina

Tsinoy Trivia:

Ethnic Chinese comprise only 2% of the total population of the Philippines. However, they direct half of all listed companies in the Philippine stock market.

Eight out of 12 billionaires from the Philippines on Asia's list of the 100 richest people are of Chinese extraction: Tan Yu (Fuga Internationale Group); George Ty (Metrobank); Henry Sy (SM Prime Holdings); Lucio Tan (Fortune Tobacco, Philippine Airlines); Andrew Gotianun Sr. (Filinvest Group); John Gokongwei (JG Summit); Alfonso Yuchengco (House of Investments); and Eduardo Cojuangco Jr. (UCP Bank, San Miguel Corp.)

Puhleeze! I just want to make this clear! The USA didn't invade Iraq to control the world's second largest oil reserves in that country nor to assassinate its president, Saddam Hussein. The American forces are not there to sow terror neither, contrary to what some Muslims have been saying that Americans are just expanding their imperial authority through terroristic and bloody means. Never mind that George Bush's aggressive invasion of that Middle East Asian country is a violation of the United Nations' international laws. Truth be told, Attack on Iraq Part 2 was begun by the U.S. to liberate the Iraqis from Hussein's dictatorial government. Hence, US-Iraq War 2003 is also named by the military as Operation Iraqi Freedom. Watch CNN, will you?

Press Release

For Immediate Forwarding / Please Post Widely

From: SoUL (Society of United Lesbians) Inc.

Subject: To Our Brothers & Sisters in the 4th WMF

This coming January 22-26, 2003 Manila will host the 4th World Meeting of Families. The call is to build up missionaries in and for Asia, giving importance to family life.

We at SoUL would like to support this endeavor but for as long as we are abrasively labeled as unnatural beings, we find it rather difficult.

For centuries the moral issue against us is our sexuality that has been adjudged to “defeat” the so-called procreation purpose. In this third millennium, shall we continuously suffer and taught to be ashamed of ourselves?

Look at our community again, we ask.

Because of the stigma of being “that unnatural” some of us are victims of domestic violence. Numerous testimonies have been shared about the physical and verbal abuses many of us had experienced simply because we decided to come out to our families.

Should there be a theology that would liberate all of us from this prejudice, we will gladly support.

In this light we salute those loving parents who have accepted their homosexual children in their families. We thank them for the courage and unconditional love and support – values reflective of a true Christian in these times.

Kudos to same-sex couples and their children who, in their everyday struggles for social acceptance, have managed to stay united as a family. We also hold in high regard our Catholic neighbors and friends who, despite patriarchal teachings of the Church against our existence, have treated us with respect.

Para sa isang malaya, maayos at matatag na pamilyang Kristiyano!
