Was anybody else slightly annoyed by the translator (I think her name is Hoshi but I am not sure)? She was so wishy-washy tonight. I loved her first scene in the premiere because she seemed so strong. Tonight she came off so weak. I know it was so she could eventually save the day but it bugged me. When Archer was motivating her and telling her to put space suit on it reminded me of all the times Kirk treated Uhura (and the other women)like children. I always hated that. Oh well I did think it was a good ep. overall.

I agree. Not that I TOTALLY like the female character being somehting of a wimp -- but it was very realistic. I don't even think there *is* anything akin to the "Star Fleet" we all "know". I think she's a linguist period --- alveit with SOME training in other stuff -- like the weapons she mentioned she knew about. I like it how everything is new and strange and scary. Yes, she was a little "whiny" --- but it came across as "true". I think this series could be really interesting and entertaining. -- MichelleB, 20:34:06 10/04/01 Thu

Oh I agree. I like the conceite of the show. It was smart of them to make a prequel. Gives it something different. I do like Hoshi... Okay let me put it this way one of my favorite lines in the book Silence of the Lambs is when Clarice is remembering her father telling her, "If you can't play without squawling, Clarice, go on to the house." I don't mind her being afraid I mind her squawling about it. -- WebbWacker, 21:03:01 10/04/01 Thu

I think I see what you mean. But her actual "screaming" was involuntary. Her kvetching was annoying -- but I even liked that -- it showed her to be less than "perfect". Most of the characters in previous ST shows were completely well-adjusted (with a few notable exceptions!) and brilliant and competent in all arenas and all that. I like the dichotomy of her being absolutely brilliant as a linguist, but a scairdy-cat and less than totally thrilled to be out there where no man has gone before. -- MichelleB, 21:37:14 10/04/01 Thu

Exactly. That's what I think will be the best thing about the show. They dont know what they are going to come accross. Almost everything will be new and seeing them in totally different surroundings and events will make the show great. I hope. -- Ian M, 03:28:50 10/05/01 Fri

Amen! I really liked Hoshi because she's not a buttoned-down, uptight Riker-type. She's not sure of herself, except when she's learning languages. I think that makes for some real potential for character development. That was one of the things I liked least about TNG--there never seemed to be any real potential for the characters to go anywhere. I have high hopes for Enterprise! GO BIG E! -- Laura (p.s.
