  Hi, I'm Bonnie's daughter in NC. I just saw the pictures of my Grandma Trudy's house and farm. It was very interesting. I hope that I can visit it someday. I was wondering was was grown on the farm. Mother can't tell me. I'm writing a paper for school about my family history and wish to include that. Come visit in North Carolina someday. Kari

  The farm was known as ( Silverdale Stock farm) This was in big letters on the side of the barn, That could be seen from the road.
  The live stock we had included pure bred Holstein cattle That because of there high quality Dad sold
  Bull caves to dairies all over. Even sold and shipped calves to five different countries including Australia
  and when Dad decided to retire and had sale dairymen came from as far as California to buy live stock.
  Other animals that we had were horses,pigs and chickens.
  The size of the farm was a one half section 320 acres. Our main crop was corn,wheat,oats and barley.
  some land was pasture for the horses and cattle. Also had a hay field to feed the cattle we also had a silo that we filled every summer for winter feed for the cows.
  When I was about 8 I was working in the field with 4 horses using different farm machanry. When I was 14. I did most of the field work using a tractor most of the time. By that time my older brothers were no
  longer living at home. Dad and the smaller kids took care of the animals. that included Feeding and milking the cows separating the milk and sold the cream. Always had quite few chickens . sold the eggs.
  We also had a lot of honey bees that was quite a bit of work some times of the year. When they were
  swarming and when we harvested the honey.

  This past week one day my printer quite working it was at least 5 years old I think and I use it a lot. So I ordered a new one It is being shipped out to me and should get it thursday.

• Tuesday, and it's my day. This is our last week here in MI. We hope to leave for Arizona on Saturday. Chuck has an appointment for a shot in his eye on Thursday, and if all goes well, we will leave Saturday morning.   It was nice to see that the house is cared for and lived in by a nice young family and the farm is an active working farm. I have many more photos taken on our visit.     Top picture is of old small barn that was built in 1933 or 34 after the original, that was at least twice as large, burned down.
    The next picture is of the old house now in Corsica, still a very nice house.
    Bottom picture was taken from the north end of the farm (our home was on the south part of the farm one mile from here). In the center of the picture you can see the outline of a silo and some buildings. in front of me you can see part of the north fence that Martin and I built over 70 years ago.   I am sure that most if not all of you know that I grew up in South Dakota, on a farm 6 miles north west of the small town of Corsica.
  The last time that I was back there was about 25 years ago. David was there when he was about a year old. David and I have been talking about going back there for at least a year. Well last week we went back there for a few days.
  We visited the farm. There are a lot of new buildings now including the house. The only old buildings still there are the barn and the hen house.
  We visited the two cousins that are still there and a few others that I grew up with.
  One thing that was quite interesting was the house that was our home when I grew up. When the new owner bought the farm they built a new house. And someone bought the old house and moved it to town and made some changes including a new kitchen. I got the name and phone number of the people that live there now. I called them and they invited us to come over and see the place, this we did and it looks like a new big house. I had a picture of the house that was taken perhaps 50 years ago and gave it to them and gave them a lot of information about the place. Such as that Dad built the house in about 1919 and he had it wired for electricity. Back then there was no one that had electric lights around there not even the small towns like Corsica. Dad had his own electric power plant with a large bank of batteries installed
  So we had all the buildings lit up and a lot of people from all around would come to see some thing they had never seen. They all had oil lamps.
  The new owners sure liked the picture I gave them and she looked at it and said I wish it looked like that now.

  • Bringing along an old picture sure helps! I recently visited a house I lived in 40 years ago. The folks living there now were suspicious of my taking pictures of their house from the street in front of it. But when I gave them pictures of how it was 40 years ago they relaxed and invited me in for a tour of how it looks now. Having the pictures really made a difference.   We are enjoying very beautiful fall days in NC. I signed up for two classes at the senior retirement center at the University of NC. I am taking an Understanding Mexico course and Bill and I are taking a Civil War course. Each are only two hours a week. I have never taken a course other than yoga or something like it that was a non credit course. It is a lot of fun. I don't have to worry about being tested. Its the way to go.

• I think I missed writing when I should have. I had a house guest one week - a sister-in-law from Lynden WA and we had a ball. Also the red hat cruise was wonderful - it was a beautiful evening- a dinner cruise and they wined and dined us beautifully.   It's been about 25 years since Grant (and I) were there. We remember it well, but David, who was there about 64 years ago, doesn't seem to remember it much at all, and he is curious about the old farm, and surroundings, etc. They will take lots of pictures and with any luck you will see one or two here.

  Well, the big Cholesterol Test is about to be completed. To prove my point that eggs don't really affect cholesterol, I ate eggs almost every day for a week or so before having a blood test.   I'm glad that Ken,Kyle and all the New Orleans Vogel's are OK. And my mother's Garrett cousins, too. I keep reflecting on my year at Tulane and am so glad that I got to spend time in the Big Easy while it was still New Orleans "as we knew it."
  
  The new job is amazing. It's one of those great jobs that I can't believe they actually pay me to do this! But I'm working way too hard. I get to work before 7 on most days and don't get home until 8 or 9. But that is all self imposed, trying to do too much, and no real reason to get home earlier, except for my two kittens.

  • We got just one brief glimpse of New Orleans ten years ago (more or less) when we went to Ken's with Martin, and then after a day Ken and Debi took us to our cruise ship which was leaving from there. We had had a quick ride through town, and a visit to the aquarium, but after that it rained and rained so although we saw Bourbon street things weren't at their best. But at least we've been there.--

We have quite a zany group...but we do good things, too! Like on Haloween we went "Trick or Treating" for a local food pantry. Bonnie, I don't think I have your NC address. Is it near where I would go when going to Hilton Head, SC? I get to Hilton Head about twice a year, but not always driving.   You do have a relative that lives in Weslaco, Tx. Milton
  Van Vuuren. He is your Dad's Cousin. His mother and your Dad's mother were sisters.
  Milton grew up in the Corsica area; we visited them often. And I am sure he would be glad to see and/or hear from you. I don't think he has any relatives near where he lives.

  I was just sitting on my porch enjoying a beautiful NC fall day. I would like to extend an invitation to any Vogel driving anywhere near here to stop and spend a night.   This morning Pam was released from Baylor University Hospital in Dallas. Pam's sister Robin and her husband Joey drove Pam back to Houston. Pam will be staying in a nursing home a few block from Robin. In case you want to drop her a line,or card, Pam's new address is: Pam Vogel -Heartland of West Houston, 2939 Woodland Park Dr, Houston TX 77082. Pam's MS does not allow her the luxury of the internet.
  
  Pam's adventure had her isolated for four days in a New Orleans hospital with only water and crackers - finally evacuated by boat to a staging area - than by ambulance to New Orlean Int'l Airport - than by Military cargo plane to Dallas. Pam said "they didn't even serve peanuts on this flight".
  
  More good news..... Ken's stepson Paul finally checked in, their home is totally destroyed, however Paul and family are safe.
  
  Ken & Debi's home appears to have "only" roof/shingle damage,with some wind driven water on the first floor. Ken & Debi hope to do their first on sight inspection later this week.

  When you click on "post a new message" (words which appear above the picture) there is no problem of any kind. Everything, both what you write in the "Message Subject" line and whatever you write in the box where it says "type your message here" will appear on the front page.
  
  However, when you click on "Post a reply to this message" only the part you write IN THE SUBJECT LINE will appear on the front page. If you write anything in the box where it says "Type your message here" it will appear "inside"
  and seem hidden.
  
  Normally a reply you see on the front page is followed by the letters NT, (meaning No Text inside). But if these letters do not appear, that means there IS more text inside, and in order to see it you must click on the line you are then looking at.

  This is my first time writing on the board, so let me know if I did something wrong. I have been keeping track of Ken and Deb and I'm so glad they are safe. I just can't even imagine the devastation- it looks like it should be in a third world country instead of the US.
  We have had a great summer in Michigan. If you don't already know, I am the oldest daughter of Larry and Betty. My youngest daughter Kelly is a teacher. She teaches at a Inner City School with the majority of the students being Hispanic. She teaches math and Spanish. My oldest daughter, Amy is in her 4th year of Medical School at the University of Michigan. She will be going in to OBGYN and hopes to complete her residency somewhere in the midwest.

  Grant tried to phone Ken, (Sunday night,) to find out what he was doing about weathering the storm. No answer, of course. Then he called Del; Mary answered and said that Ken and his family had gone to Houston to wait it out. She also said that Ken's big two-story home just outside New Orleans is supposedly built to withstand a Category 4 storm. This one is predicted to be a 5, of course, but we'll hope for the best.

  At the recent meeting of the local "rare fruit growers club" a man was giving out little seedlings of this plant, the cocona.(from S. America) He wants people to see how it does in S.Calif. and if people like it. He says test marketing in grocery stores hasn't worked because in the U.S. people don't know what it is so most won't buy or try it. They do , however, find it irresistable to give it a squeeze as they go by, ruining it for the rare person who might try it.

  I just love "back to school." I'm too old for getting a new box of crayons with all the tips sharp and all the colors still present, but there is just something about the start of a new school year that still excites me. So I guess it's a good thing that I'm in higher education and still get to experience this euphoria.
  
  Most of my time is being spent trying to assimilate. I'm holding open forums with faculty and staff, and trying to attend every social activity in town to get to meet the folks my handlers want me to meet. And I'm loving every minute of it.
  
  But I've had two bad experiences with my cats.
  
  The realtor in Texas (or someone) let my kitten, Simon out and he never returned. He was a sweet long haired, 10 week old gray kitten with four white feet and a white face.
  
  My mother helped me fly my other cat up here with me (BTW, I don't recommend it!) He's an indoor/outdoor 4 year old male (mostly indoors). In the past two weeks I've been letting him outside in short supervised visits and last week I let him out while I was on the patio and he just vanished. I finally got pictures printed up and just came home from putting up REWARD posters with his picture.
  
  It's hard enough to be without family and friends, but I'm without a furry pet for the first time in 25 years!

  Last night I had two strange dreams. In one, a man named Tom was asking me if I knew a woman named Frances. I did, but I wasn't about to tell him, so I said no. (Actually, the only Frances I have ever known was a girl in grade school.)
  Another dream was about a Kimodo Dragon. Someone had been displaying it and giving us information about it, and saying we should be careful about these animals because they can be dangerous. First thing I knew, it was chasing me, and I had to run down several winding hallways to find another room so I could dart in and shut the door (just in time). It scratched on the door and still was trying to get me.
  Also, in the middle of the night when we were sound asleep OUR TV TURNED ON!!!!!
  Does anyone care to try to explain these strange events?

  This a nice time of the year, real nice weather and all kinds of fresh fruit. One day I started with a banana first thing in the morning then I had an orange, later I had a grapefruit, then I had a nectarine. A tomato and a fig. And topped it of with a big slice of lemon pie.
  Next month David and I plan to go to Corsica for a few days. Will tell you all about it after we get back.
  Hope we have nice weather. David was only about a year old when he was there and it must be about 25 years ago the last time that I was there.

  Well, we had an interesting outing. Our church had tickets for tours of the new Newport Beach Mormon temple, which is just finished, and which will be mostly closed to the non-Mormon public after it is dedicated.
  So we carpooled with a group of 12 or so from church. When we got to the temple grounds, we were directed to go to another area half a mile or so away for parking; a bus would bring us back from there. So we did that, and finally got to the temple itself. There were lots and lots of people waiting for their last chance to see the inside of the temple. Before we could go in, we had to have little plastic booties put on our feet, so that we wouldn't get the floors dirty,
  I had expected a big auditorium, but instead there were many separate rooms. Beautiful floors, beautiful sparkling crystal chandeliers, beautiful furniture and artwork. (And beautiful beautiful cookies when we finished the tour.)
  I suppose the most interesting of the rooms was the one where people go to be "sealed." It seems that a family can be sealed in such a way that in heaven they will always be together as a family. How this works when the children grow up and marry and have families of their own, and want to be sealed with those, didn't seem quite clear.
  Leaving the area on the bus back to where we had parked, we saw men just outside the grounds with signs: "Josephlied.com" and "Mormoninfo.org" and of course when we got home I looked those up. One is pro-Mormonism, the other anti. Both rather interesting, hut only for about five minutes.

  This has been a crazy week for me. Canton, Ohio is the home of the Pro Football Hall of Fame, and it has consumed the last ten days (parades, fireworks, balloons, enshrinement, luncheons, dinners, and the list goes on). It's been fun and exciting (and a great introduction to the community! I now know more about Dan Morino and Steve Young than I ever thought I would.
  I'm ready to get back to my "real work."
  Last night I went on a "girls night out" to the Miami/ Chicago game which didn't get over until midnight!

I find we spend our lives collecting "stuff" and then have to get rid of it.   So it's time for "Grant's family" to write something. His family consists of two silent gentlemen and two loquacious ladies, so I guess it is my turn. Maybe the other loquacious lady will add something too.
  Anyway we just had our yearly area picnic-potluck. The people who live in our building and the one opposite us facing the same lawn have a get-together every August, out on the lawn in the wind. (We have now been here in Leisure World exactly 13 years, by the way.) Anyway, everyone brought far too much food, and ate far too much, and then hung around and talked too much. We brought home a lot of excess food, too. So I guess those diets we are really and truly going to go on, will have to wait a few days.

  I really haven't abandoned all of my new-found family, but it's been pretty crazy since I saw everyone a few weeks ago.
  
  I'm now in Canton, Ohio, and started my new job here at Kent State, Stark.
  
  On Friday I got to ride in a hot air balloon during the Pro Football Hall of Fame Balloon Classic Invitational, which is held on our campus and attracts over 150,000 people.
  
  The movers came yesterday to deliver my household goods and I'm literally in piles of boxes that are taller than I am in places!
  
  I'm still hoping that those Vogels driving south from Grand Rapids for the winter or golf or whatever will stop by en route to more southern ports.
  
  When unpacked, I will have room for lots of overnight guests, and house guests are an encouragement to get those boxes unpacked - or at least to the basement.

  I'm a day late but I think that this was a successful idea. I didn't look at the board for about a week and a half while we were gone. I was surprized to see how many different people had written. It is good to see all the names.
  I understand Uncle Grant gave out the e-mail address at the reunion. Since I was not there could you please e-mail me one. I would really appreciate it.
  People are complaining about the hot weather here but we think they are crazy. Miami in August is much worse. This is nothing.
  Probably I won't write next week. My daughter Amy and family will be coming to visit from Colorado for a week. We are pretty excited. Kari doesn't have to return to nursing school until the day they leave.

I had a Mormon relative of my daughter translate it. He had completed in mission in Holland. I think that I gave Uncle Grant a copy.   I don't want to talk about the weather ... spent 2 hours on the golf course early this morning working with a couple of potential "Fall Team" members and we literally dripped through the drills. The weather is brutal across the states. I've made plans to meet friends from Chicago in Las Vegas next week ... an extravaganza of shows. It has been several years since any of us have been there and Vegas has become so BIG. We have an implied pack that "gambling is not allowed" which hopefully protects our life savings.   We are having hot and humid weather.
  There have been some flash floods about 50 --100 miles from here. It has not been to bad for us as we live about 2 miles from the ocean. Inland 50 or more miles it has been real hot several days over a 100
  Because of the heat Edison could not keep up with the demand and two days in a row they turned off our air conditioner for at least an hour. As far as I know this the first time they have ever done that to us. Grant

  MIAMI, Florida (AP) -- An enormous, hazy cloud of dust from the Sahara Desert is blowing toward the southern United States, but meteorologists do not expect much effect beyond colorful sunsets.
  The leading edge of the cloud -- nearly the size of the continental United States -- should move across Florida sometime from Monday through Wednesday.
  "This is not going to be a tremendous event, but it will be kind of interesting," said Jim Lushine, a severe weather expert with the National Weather Service in Miami.

  It's Saturday morning & i'm at work for a few hours. Not too bad since we have good A/C here. No big news, Shauna (my oldest) and I have just finished remodeling our kitchen (she does most of the work and I make the comments). Not sure what she has in line for me next?? The rest of the time we spend working or playing with our dog Blue (9 month Boxer mix). My son Cory just purchased his first house and has been busy on that when not working (Engineer at Boeing). Shelly has a condo in Long Beach and is always busy with friends, her dog (Shitsu??) and work (xray tech at a hospital with a great beach view).
  
  My sister Sharon has just returned from a vacation to Iowa and elswhere visiting her distant grandchildren. She only lives a few miles away but i have yet to talk to her. Maybe this weekend. Now that she is retired she is busier than ever, bowling, golfing and vacation!! Don't think i'm up to that much exertion so i'll stay working for a while.
  
  Mom seems to be doing good. Visits lots of neighbors, plays cards, does a class. She is scheduled to go to Iowa soon also to visit her sister and lots of old friends!

• They have posted a heat alert across the valley (120 in the shade) and I was curious as to how hot it is in the sun. Took my digital theomometer out and it instantly recorded 137.5. Not safe for humans or pets (even snakes). But, I still managed to play 18 holes of golf this morning before 10:00 a.m. Its that or cabin fever. As this is dry heat, I'd still opt for this over the winters or summers in Wisconsin or the Dakotas.   We are leaving tomorrow to drive to Conn. to spend a couple days with Bills brother and then drive to NJ to visit with his sister. It's very different not to think about taking too much time. I am still mentally adjusting to knowing that my time is all mine. After we get home Amy and her family are coming for a week. It is not often that I get my children and grandchildren all together.   I love the idea of each of having a day to write. Having been at the reunion around my crazy uncles and cousins gives me courage to tell stories about myself.
  
  Last night I threw a 4th of July party for about 12 friends and neighbors. It was also a moving party, since it was the last day in a normal house for a while (OK, not THAT normal!) as the packers arrived bright and early this morning to pack up the house for my move to Ohio.
  
  We had lots of hot dogs and hamburgers, and of course lots of margaritas, beer, wine and rum runners.
  
  Darkness fell and we started shooting off the fireworks one went in a neigbhor's palm tree and it caught on fire. It put on quite a show since they don't trim the dead fronds, and it spread to two other trees (and a little bit of a 4th). 10 foot flaming fronds dropped to the ground creating a 4 foot pile probably 15 feet in diamater.
  
  We had police, fire engines and all the excitement anyone could want. My friends agree that I throw a heck of a party, and since the tree was so entertaining we didn't even finish shooting the fireworks!

  Good idea Aunt Nancy. Let's see how we all do. Bill and I just returned from a two week cruise to Norway. We sailed all the way up to Spitsbergen. Look it up. It's a long way up there. We saw the Midnight Sun for about three nights. It was pretty fantastic. We were with two other couples and had a great time.
  We spent two nights before the cruise in London and four nights after the cruise. We were very lucky because we flew home the morning of the sixth. Bill had been teasing me because I used our three day tube pass so much. He said they wouldn't let me back because they couldn't make any money. That is our news. Bonnie

My wife Nancy and I visited you folks April 1997 and we sure did have nice visit with you. I expect you remember us. Your Grandfather came with us. After a few days we went on a cruise and a few days later your Grandfather went back to California.
  I spent a lot of time with him. We did a lot of fishing and bowling together.

  • Maybe he could eat gummy worms and gummy bears. He might think it's meat. My friend's boyfriend has a 23 foot Burmese python. He watched it hatch from the egg, and it's 18 or 19 now. It's name is Speed Bump. She lives in a "condo" behind the house and is easy to ignore...until a hurricane is coming. If that condo takes a direct hit, I'm outta here!   Besides the Vogel Family board, I have another message board (for Leisure World, the retirement community where we live), which like ours was in the doldrums, with many people posting something once in a while, but who mainly lurked, reading other people‘s posts, seldom writing anything themselves. I finally got the idea of suggesting certain days of the week for certain people to write something, and this really brought the board to life. Now we have new posts on it every day, often several.
  Maybe we could do something like that with the Vogel Family Board, so that everyone can keep in touch. Maybe the kids or grandkids of each Vogel (mostly in the order in which they appear in the picture) could write something on “their day.”

  I flew to Chicago yesterday, then rented a car and drove to Grand Rapids -- about a 200 mile drive. I got to Uncle L's house and there was a group of about 18 or 20 people, including 4 or 5 cousins who greeted me and then had to leave. They had waited long enough to see me, for the first time in years for some, the first time ever for others, and they headed for home.
  
  And who else do you suppose was there?? Connie had claimed she couldn't come. Well, she surprised everyone. I hadn't seen her since a reunion in around 1980 or 81. We stayed up talking for hours and hours. I'm beginning to remember why I liked her so much.
  
  In a while we're all going to meet at the usual restaurant and make plans for the day. It's a good reunion, unstructured, but with everyone in town at the same time.

  Is California going to become a island? I have been told many times that a big earthquake will cause California to break off the mainland and become an island.
  Well, we have--after no earthquakes for a long time--had five quakes the past six days. So people are concerned about what is going on.
  Well, we are still part of the mainland, and most of us just go on doing the same things that we have been doing, and wonder if these quakes will cause some that have moved to Calif. to move back to where they grew up. And we also wonder if it will slow down the influx that we have had for years. California's population has been increasing more than a thousand a day for several years I am told.
  And those of us that have been living here most of our life would rather have quakes that the storms that much of the country has.
  I plan to go to Mich. next week and sure hope they don't have a tornado while am there.
