We have had a lot of rain and dark weather the past at least 6 weeks. Now the weather is nice and warm. Also my income tax has been filed. Now I can enjoy watching the ball games and do a lot of bowling. It is a great life.

Sorry Nancy, I erred. When we met a week ago I mentioned that my Uncle Bill Kredit often talked about his friend Walter Baas. In reviewing our family records, I find a graduation announcement from Harrison Academy for a Walter K. Baas who graduated with him June 12, 1930. If my records are correct, Lee's father was Walter Peter Baas. Apparently there were two Walter Baas' in the Corsica/Harrison area?

- I believe it was customary in the "olden days" to alternate male names - in the Vogels we had Andrew, John, Andrew, John, etc. The Baas family had Walter, Peter, Walter, Peter, etc. etc. If I had been a boy, I'd likely be Peter. Hi, I've been reading but not contributing or as Aunt Nancy says "lurking" After a beautiful winter we now have a glorious spring. We are expecting Miami friends for a few days tomorrow. After that we are taking our 11 year old grandson, Jimmy, for a week in Washington DC. We have tickets for the congress and the White House. Our friends have an apartment there so we should be comfortable. We are looking forward to this adventure. Hope all are well.

Last night I had the opportunity to see Celtic Woman. I'm still awestruck. It features 4 Irish soloists and an incredible fiddle player (who is so tiny she looks like Tinkerbell as she flits around the stage. Yes, she does flit). Costuming & stage set are fantastic, & there are 2 percussionists who are exciting to hear & watch. On Friday, London parade officials released a statement to the News-Press of Fort Myers, warning British travelers about the city's crime and homicide rates, Lee County's record number of traffic deaths in 2005 and that the "entire area is prone to catastrophic hurricanes."

- I hadn't heard/read about it. As for the crime rate, I'm afraid I don't pay much attention for two reasons. I came here from Chicago, and I'm in N Ft Myers which has a much lower crime rate. Bill is related to the Vogels and to the Notebooms (my mother was a Noteboom). Bill's grandmother on his dad's side was a sister to my mother.
Bill's great grandmother was a Vogel, a sister to my great grandfather.

Hi Uchi. Nice to meet you. I'm kind of shirt-tail relation. In the family tree, John A. Vogel married Gertrude Noteboom, who was a sister of my father's mother (Mary Noteboom). Therefore my father, Tony, and Grant (and your mother, Trudy, of course), were cousins. I have known Grant and Nancy since 1940, when we left the farm in South Dakota and moved to Los Angeles. That is a brief synopsis of how our families are tied.

We managed to survive our first aglity outing. Starlight did everything I asked her to do. Too bad I got so confused and gave her such bad directions.

We, Carolyn and I are in Michigan now and I am scheduled to leave next week for Bangkok, Chiang Mai, China and Cambodia. I should be back in the US on the 13th of April. Every year there seems to be at least one emergency that changes my schedule. Last year the tsunami changed my schedule for the first three months because those giving aid and support to the tsunami victims were really stressed. The year January I made a quick trip to Nigeria where a 4yr old son of a missionary family drowned in a small water hole behind their house. All of the expatriates in Nigeria have to put up with a lot of tension with armed robbers and crooked police and other government people.
I left for Asia two days after getting back from Nigeria and among other things I had a seminar in Thailand dealing with addiction.

For Catholic and Protestant priests alike, the clerical collar started out as a secular accessory. It began to take shape sometime in the 15th century, when men were folding linen collars over their outerwear. Because the Middle Ages saw very little advancement in the fields of dry cleaning or hot showers, the clergy adapted the style. The easily removable, washable collars kept the priest's trademark black robes, called cassocks or soutanes, from getting soiled with sweat stains.

I am one of Walt and Dena's kids. I am a Psychologist and I volunteer full time to provide support services to missionaries and relief workers all over the world. Translated that means I am gone from the US much of the time. My wife Carolyn travels with me about 1/3rd of the time. So now when you see my name you will know where I fit in.

I found fascinating info about the Flavor Point Diet, originated by a Dr. Katz. The principle is that if you eat enough of a certain flavor at one sitting you will be more quickly satisfied than if you eat many flavors. One day chocolate, another day pineapple, another salt, and so on. When I got home I looked it up on the Internet, and if you go to this website you can read all about it in detail.

Today was G, so I chose Gourmet Magazine. You all probably thought I didn't go to the library today. But you're wrong--I went, braving sleet and snow! (Well, a slight ocean breeze anyway.)
And this is what I read: "The art of being a gourmet has nothing to do with age, money, fame or country ... the practitioner of the art will have the eye of an artist, the imagination of a poet, the rhythm of a musician, and the breadth of a sculptor." The first issue in 1941 was launched with these words.
And elsewhere in the magazine I read that the way to hold chopsticks is as though you're holding a bird's beak; you hold the lower rigid, and the top moves. Or maybe the other way around. However, this doesn't work; I've tried it both ways.

I chose Fortune Magazine, and learned that while most Americans want General Motors to succeed, because it touches so many other businesses, still there is a good chance that it will go into bankruptcy. I really should exercise more. (So should you.) But I don't do it. So I have thought of a plan. Every day I will walk (WALK!) to the library, and ferret out an interesting fact from a magazine--starting with a magazine whose title starts with A and working my way through the entire alphabet.

I've done A, B, and C, and tomorrow I will be up to D. My plan (gotta keep the lurkers entertained) is to post these facts here, starting tomorrow. Pay attention to these facts, because after I reach Z there will be a quiz.

Last week the winner got 9 right on Thursday afternoon. I had 7 right, but at least I got my answers in on Wednesday.

Yesterday evening the phone rang; I answered it, and a male voice said that he and Betty would be visiting us and Helen for a few days starting the first of March. But after the conversation Grant said no, that was Lefty; Harry wouldn't be coming clear from Florida, and besides he hates to travel. Today is my birthday (39th again.) My wonderful husband gave me a new computer and a sensational monitor; my kids came over with stuff for the computer and set up various things for us. Thanks to them we now have internet access on both computers, the old and the new, at no extra price. (No, no piracy involved; our server, Adelphia, smiles on what they did with a wireless router and some other stuff.)

The new one is mainly for graphics, for my new paint program, which Santa Claus brought me two months ago. And which I haven't yet mastered, I regret to say. You'll see pictures here one of these days, however.

We just returned from two weeks in Florida. Saw Connie and talked with Uncle Harry. We tried to get to see Harry and Betty but they were out dancing and dining. They do make me tired. We saw the King Tut exhibit in Ft. Lauderdale. It was pretty fantastic. I would urge you LA folks to see it when it makes it to you. It will be at one other location but I can't remember it. We did see some of the things when we were in Egypt. Because this was smaller, in English and presented more beautifully it made it much easier. Hope that all are well. We missed a snow storm here.

For 11 years, Donna McVety has collected stories written by Southwest Florida nurses that allow the reader "to enter into the sacred space between nurse and patient."

Their stories are selected by peers for awards bestowed by District 7 of the Florida Nurses Association, which includes Southwest Florida. District winners then are entered into a state competition.

For the first time this year, the state Nursing Clinical Excellence Conference, which McVety coordinates, will be in Fort Myers. Sixteen nurses will be honored at the event and will read their stories, including five from Southwest Florida. They are Charity Uchima, Susan Whatley, Vera Walkowiak, Kathleen Rose and Catherine Lopes.

Above Charity's photo, it says:

Charity Uchima, 30, of Lehigh Acres, was working as an emergency room nurse at the Lehigh Regional Medical Center in 2002 when the father of a "beautiful precious infant" taught her a lesson about life and death. Her story is one of three Uchima has written that have won acclaim. She presented it at the state conference last year.

My dog Starlight and I are taking a "dog agility" class. Last week a camera crew came from the local TV station and did a piece on the class. It's part of a 30 minute show, and the segment on the class was about 2 minutes long.

They've put the show on the city website, and if you'd like to see it Click here. Once it begins to load you'll see a scroll bar at the bottom and you can slide it to the right about 2/3 of the way until the timer shows 21 minutes. Or you can watch the whole show, of course, but my part starts at 21 minutes. The teacher says about 3 or 4 words, then there's a quick shot of him letting my dog loose and she runs through the tunnel to me. Look fast or you'll miss it.

Yes, we did make it unscathed from our week with the grandchildren. Actually it was a lot of fun and a lot of work. Having four kids is not for the faint of heart. We are headed for sunny Florida at the end of this week. Our winter here has been beautiful so far. Many sunny days in the 50's. I don't remember Grand Rapids being like this.

A bit late because Voy was down for repairs Sunday--as all you users and lurkers well know. Two lurkers confessed yesterday--two of Dena's kids. And they promised to do better in the future.

Anyway the big news is that Marvin and Betty visited us, and with them was guess who--to our surprise and delight, Lee Baas! He told us all about his travels and plans.

I showed them my latest painting, and Marvin gave me an in-depth analysis of it, pointing out deep meanings and subtle allegories in it that even I had been unaware of.

Lee told us about changing condition in Africa. The reason he doesn't put much on this board, he said with a sort of smirk, is that he travels a lot and uses Internet cafes and of course when he isn't home with his own computer he doesn't know the board's address.

Well, it's Tuesday and it's my turn. So to start the new year off right, I wish you this Mexican/ Spanish toast: Health, wealth and love and time to enjoy them!

My mother, brother and middle child Broox (who some of you met this summer) went on a cruise the week before Christmas, then made it to Shreveport for Christmas day.

I'm back in Ohio now, which is certainly colder and drearier, but it is home now and it's always good to get "home." There is a pop song called "Ohio" by a group called, of all things "Bowling for Soup" that says "... there's nothing wrong with Ohio, except the snow and the rain ..." Oh well, I'm talking to the snowbirds who know what real winter is like!

I hope that all of you made it happily and safely to this New Year. We partied with some neighbors and watched the midnight fireworks from their home high on top of the mountain.
We have four of our grandchildren staying with us for about 11 days. Their parents are in Hawaii. My husband has never had any children but he is holding up well!

I got something very interesting in the mail recently--an invitation to possibly serve as a Federal juror on the U.S. District Court, central district of California.
On January 27, 2006, begins jury selection for "a very important case that may last from six to eight months."
I wonder what the case will be! It must be something that is already in the works, and probably well known.

We had our first ice storm here the other day. We had to stay in one day. Different from Miami! We had a nice trip to Miami. We visited Savannah for a couple days returning. That is always a wonderful spot.
This morning we had many neighbors over for brunch. It was our first big party since moving here. It was very successful.
Pearl, I thought that you were going to stop in Asheville. You are still invited some other time.

Hi from Madison...it's cold here. I returned early Sunday morning from my 16 day vacation in the Carolinas. It was wonderful. I got to see siblings, son and his wife, two grandchildren and their spouses, and two great-grandbabies. Also lots of time for relaxing and fun. Some mentioned Christmas shopping by check...well, almost all of mine is by check or gift cards. Grant, who arranges these things, set up the amateur radio club's annual Christmas breakfast three weeks ago, telling the restaurant people there'd be about 25 people on this date (Dec. 7) at 9 a.m. Then, just to make sure nothing would go wrong, he stopped in there again two days ago to confirm everything.

But--when we all got there this morning, lo and behold, they were not expecting us. They had taken the "25" to mean the 25th of the month. (Odd, since that would be Christms day.)

There weren't any waitresses, since they weren't expecting us, and one waiter had to do the whole thing. So we had to wait a long time before our orders were taken, and even longer to be served. So it wasn't too smooth, And Grant lost a manila folder with important papers in it, but later it turned out they had gotten mixed in with the menus. And the president of the club had gotten sick the night before, so he couldn't attend. So all in all it was one of the more interesting and memorable breakfasts.

Today isn't my day, but if I wait until Tuesday, I never seem to write. My mother, Betty, brother, Garrett (Rett) and two of my three children (Broox and Lee-Gray) were here for Thanksgiving. We had quite a snowstorm, an oddity for us Southerners now in Ohio!

I'm still enjoying my new job and the Canton area.

This summer at the reunion, I made a note on my Palm (an electronic calendar/phone/e-mail device for those who aren't into such things) that a caravan of Vogels will be passing through Canton this weekend on their way to points south for the winter. Has the annual migration already happened or should I keep the light on?

A Tempe man arrested after charging the field and spreading his mother's ashes during a Philadelphia Eagles football game returned to Arizona Tuesday to overwhelming support for what he did.

Chip Noteboom, 44, said mothers at the airport embraced him and attorneys called and offered legal services when he returned, while media outlets mobbed his north Valley bar, 1800's Saloon and Grill.

"I wasn't trying to make a big deal about it," Noteboom said. "I just wanted to do it for my mom."

Noteboom, a native of Doylestown, Pa., said he waited until the second quarter of the game to make his way from an upper-level section down to field level at Lincoln Financial Field He said he waited just before the kickoff after halftime to run onto the field at 6:10 p.m. with the plastic bag of his mother's ashes.

"I thought it was best to just say a 'Hail Mary' and release them while I was running," he said. "It was pretty exhilarating and I could hear the crowd cheering."

Once the bag was empty, Noteboom dropped it, made the sign of the cross, fell to his knees and to the ground before police arrested him just short of the 50-yard line.

Noteboom said police detained him for 19 hours while they questioned him, making sure the substance was his mother's ashes.

"Post 9/11, that was extremely poor judgment, but to dump an unknown substance on the field with so many people is unconscionable," said Philadelphia police Inspector Bill Colarulo.

Noteboom was charged with misdemeanor trespassing and is scheduled to appear in a Philadelphia court on Dec. 27, Colarulo said.

But Noteboom said knew what he was doing and is prepared to suffer the consequences.

He said his mother, who died in January and was born and raised in Philadelphia and attended Penn State, was a huge Eagles fan. Their family moved to Arizona in 1972 and due to health problems, his mother hadn't been back to Philadelphia, or an Eagles game since, he said.

Noteboom said he asked to hold on to some of the ashes after he and his sisters poured some in a river in Philadelphia. Then he got the idea to spread them on the field when he visited Philadelphia last week.

"I don't know if that's what she would have wanted, but I know right now that she is absolutely smiling down at me from ear to ear," he said.

We (Grant and I, David and Judy and Donna and Mike) went to one of our favorite restaurants near here for Thanksgiving dinner.

The special menu offered several splendid entrees, including of course the main one, the turkey dinner with all the trimmings, for about $18. Some in our party ordered that, but some of us ordered the "every day" turkey dinner, in the main menu. This one was about $9. I was curious to see what the difference would be.

And what was the difference? Nothing. The turkey dinners were identical.

Later we asked the waitress about this, and she said, a bit sheepishly, well, with one you get dessert and a beverage.

I am leaving tomorrow for the Miami Book Fair. This is one of my all time favorite things to do. I have 3 Michigan friends joining me. After the weekend Bill will drive down and we will see friends and hopefully Connie. We are having our Thanksgiving in Miami.
On the way back we will spend 2 nights in Savannah. Christmas season should be pretty there.
I would like to know more about the anticipated Vogel book. This is very interesting!

Dad's first car.
I will add what I remember about the car. It was a Reo touring car, 1916 model I think. It was a large expensive car at that time. It was a 7 or 8 passenger car. There was so much room between the front and the back seat there were what we called jump seats that could be folded up or down.
Each front fender had a wheel well and had a spare tire in each one. And it had a big 6 cyl. engine. It also had a self starter (not electric as today's starters). I don't know how it worked. It had a tank that I think built up pressure. It was very quiet. Most cars did not have self starters in those days. We also had one or two model T fords that we used every day. The Reo was used to go to church and special places when the weather and roads were good.
About 1924 an auto salesman came to our place from Mitchell (40 miles). He was driving a Chev. and
traded it for the Reo. I do not know what kind of a deal was made. Later we heard that Lawrence welk was using it to carry his band. The salesman did not tell us that he had a buyer for the Reo but I am sure he did.

Was talking to my father last night. Some how we got on the topic of grampa Vogels first car. He told me that grandpa sold that car to Lawrence Welk??? This is a piece of family history that I could not make up in a hundred years.

Greetings from Madison. I'm spending the day at my desk, doing what I love to do. Messed up bookwork! Really, I love it. One of Gerry's nephews had a business which went bad, as well as his marriage and health, and he hadn't kept records or done any bookwork since 2003. I have piles of stuff I am trying to reconstruct - like depreciation schedules, etc. Anybody out there as crazy as me? I really find this as challenging as a good puzzle! - What kind of cards do you play? During a typical week we play bridge, Shanghai,and pinochle. Bridge is quite a bit like working out puzzles--you might like it. Or mayhe you aleady play. It can be quite a challenge. When we play two hours, (the usual length of our games) I am definitely ready to quit. One of the pairs we play with usually clobber us; the other pair, we clobber. Last week my step mother visited. She has been researching her family and attempted to show me how to get started. She was able to pull up two documents from Corcia. One was 1900 census and the other 1920. I did not know how to print the information so I could not save it. It was all hand written on long ledger sheets. 1900 showed Grandpa Vogel living with another family and their 4 children. He worked as their farm assistant. He was in his early 20's. The other showed him, Grandma, Dena, Andy, Grant, Roy, Bill and Martin. We couldn't find 1910.

Our weather is so beautiful! My windows have been open for days after months of hot, humid weather. I'll be moving a few things to the new house today, so the cooler temperature is a real blessing. My day to write something--but there's no inteesting news. So I'll tell you some that ISN'T interesting. I wore a sort of Hallowe'en outfit to church this morning, (All black and orange wnyway.) But nobody else did.
Let's see, what else is new and not interesting? Well, Grant is working very seriously on a jigsaw puzzle.

I will give you a report on what I know. Connie is somewhere in Orlando with some friends staying in a hotel. I have not spoken with her but my stepmother has. We don't know yet how her home did. She is moving into Mothers home the beginning of the month so at this time she has two months. All of the homes in the park are standing but some have damage. Neither my stepmother or her neighbors had any. Hopefully Connie's will be as lucky.
We are leaving to spend the night in Charlotte to see River Dance. When we return if there is any additional information I will post it.
It was great to be in NC this time.

Wednesday - WOW! Right on schedule. OK, all of you - SIT UP STRAIGHT! I just talked to myself about this as I slouch when I'm on the computer. OK, 'nuf about me. I hope to go to GR in a week or two - don't want to wait until snow comes and I wanted to get there yet this fall..After that the next trip will be the Hilton Head one. I think Sunday is the day for us to put something on the board so I am a day late. nothing much to write about . The Angeles did not make it to the world series. That was bad news. My bowling has been going down for the past few weeks. That was not good news but the past week I have been improving some.
David and Judy have been out of town the past 3 weeks visiting Judys mother. They come back home tonite.
We keep trying to keep up on the weather hope that Connie will not have any damage. Our weather is cool for the past several days. About 2 weeks ago we had a week of hot days up to about 90 most every day even close to 100 a few times.
We have a lot to be thankful for as both of us are doing just fine.
