he's infallible, just ask him."Best two players in the draft". Sorry TT, I still get a chuckle out of that one. Still, we took Thorpe ahead of Selwood so there;s many mistake been made (don;t mention Dowler).

All up, I'm okay with our fortnight. O'Rourke isn't the only player desperate to get out of GWS. Starting to truly believe, and not just think. The biggest mistake the AFL made when setting up that club was appointing the old wino Sheedy as coach. Gold Coast took a punt with McKenna and while slow to develop given similar access to early picks, look on a better path than what GWS is doing.

O'Rourke, wasn't happy with how they rehabed him. Pick 20 or thereabouts given away is mandatory it seems for Hawthorn now (McEovy, O'Rourke, Anderson, Gunston have all come from giving up our first selection and throwing in a depth kind of player. Last time we used out first round pick we got Issac Smith. Then Bradley Hill with our first 'live' pick a couple of drafts later. Cured the query over our run/pace right there. Anderson if he gets over his injury wars is extremely promising as well. Chuck in Hartung and if O'Rourke can also get past his injury troubles. There's our midfield run for the next ten years. Lewis will need help once Hodge, Burgoyne and Mitchell give it away like Sewell has. Given Langford and his second half of the season form there's one. Sheils is already there. Whitecross is very solid but two knee reconstructions you have to wonder. Ditto Woodward. Simpkin is great depth and probably the best 'red vest' player in the league.

Lowden I was disappointed to lose. He's a lot better than Grimley who isn't going to make it. Cheney is a pure stopper. Gives nothing but marking his man. Both wanted more senior playing time and I think the club just said okay, we will take some nothing special picks, thanks for the service to the side and best at Adelaide. Hallahan exactly the same.

Shoenmakers a lot of Hawthorn supporters have a new scapegoat a'la Dawson in him. Dawson has played nearly a 150 odd games now and while no world beater, he's become an honest 2nd tall defender when Mcpharlin is fit enough to be the first choice defender.

In Frawley, 600k a season sounds to much. But he's a free agent (and shows the ludicrous and total garbage compensation we got for Franklin when Melbourne gets pick 3 for him). He's a very good defender and why the genius Roos didn't play him as one only he'd know.

Five years on those wages though, with the rise of players payments. In a few seasons, good players but not elite ones will be on money around that mark for the most part I think. So as a long term choice, he'll probably prove value for money (if he gets back to AA form, better than value for money).

I think the one surprise was we didn't nominate Paul Dear's son. He's been a slow work in progress, not unlike his Dad taking time to come good as a player. Is taller than his old man, not as tall as Uncle Greg. Is meant to play like the old man as well. Crash packs, clean hands so-so hand and foot skills. Good ruck relief that some Hawks supporters say he mimics when Roughead goes into the middle. Not to many hit-outs but very good at ground level due to some basketball background. Might be a surprise selection at another side looking for developing talls and it'd be a bit of a let down to see him in colours other than ours. Especially as his mother died not long after he was born. Not even sure Paul has remarried or not. If we don't draft him I hope he makes our rookie list at least.

On other sides. Beams big loss for the Woods. Rate him highly. The tatts give him the image that he's Martin type. Yet I've never heard of him hanging with a wrong crowd. Always seems like he's wanting to be out there in amongst it. Again, unlike Dusty who plays weeks looking like he's going through the motions. Then will play as if the games second nature to him and look one of the finest midfielders going around.

No idea who Jack Crisp is and if he comes on as a player, there's a bonus to the Woods. Greenwood is solid and will give value. But draft pick 5 , like TT mentioned, should give a good chance of picking up if not a top liner (though that is possible) a very good long term player just the same. Add Darcy Moore and there's two early shots waiting to arrive to the Woods summer training.

Waite, Higgins are talented but past their best plus both injury prone. Given North already have Tarrant jnr and Aaron Black who are just list cloggers from my pov. Don't see the sense in it. Goldstein still rucking on his own but Brown (who Hawthorn were seriously considering before being persuaded by Garlett he'd become serious about his footy and was prepared to give it a go... mark that down with Dowler, Thorp, Muston ..). He could have become a nice replacement for Hale long term as Grimley wont be it. Petrie hot and cold and getting old. Keeping Firrito who came off the Box Hill list a decade back. A more talented Cheney but also playing out of his height/weight range. Strange trading from North I thought.

Harry, Clarke and Varcoe. Three way swap for three talented but strange in the head blokes. How it'll work out for all clubs (except Collingwood who did well to get rid of the strangest unit in Harry) time will tell. I reckon a bust for all three at all three clubs. Hoping so as I don't like any of them to be truthful. Varcoe the best chance of giving some decent footy.

Ryder wore Essendon down and I was so hoping he'd go for neglect of welfare against them. Dons folded and got lucky Port, who need another talented ruck, gave up the picks they did. Cooney nothing like he was but good player and good bloke by reports. The exact type of player they need to bring in.

Boyd/Griffen. Yea well. Griffin plays out a wasted career of a total gun footballer who got selected by a lousy side and never saw them ever look like a Premiership 'in the long term/rebuilding' side. Enjoy the pay cheques at GWS. Maybe get on the coaching side of things down the track. Boyd with that body and that talent (or hopefully for the Doggies, more talent than a similar payment that was made to Scully)... Again going to go to waste. Hard to figure out from the three. Saints, Demons, Dogs who are the worst run. So many early picks. So little return. Let him learn his craft there and in seven years (or shorter if the AFLPA have its way on F.A) see him come to us or Sydney when Buddy retires early but still is being paid. Maybe Geelong to replace Hawkins. Whatever, he's just the next Chris Grant down there. Good money for the kid, hope he spends it wisely.

Others not worth discussing. Mitch whatshisname from Carlton not picked up a little surprising. He's hard at the ball at least something a few sides could do with. Melb have one bloke like it in their Captain. Why not take in a lookalike who got kicked out of Carlton when they took Garlett anyway.

And that's the wrap.

Frawley, O'Rourke in. Sewell, Lowden, Cheney and Hallahan out. Looks like depth has taken a bit of a hit. Frawley big upgrade on Cheney and with Shoe being given the chance to stay, can hopefully get confidence back as he's got ability to become a good senior footballer. Sewell made way for Langford so it's a transition just on age really. Lowden does leave us a little thin in rucks. Hale, McEvoy (personally not a big fan) and Ceglar (who I do like). Rough at a pinch or if injury strikes, Grimley (Grim indeed).

We have a moderate injury run next year, we are a chance to make it three on end. Could be a bit of 91 about it after that though. Class inside players and hope that Heatherly and Tatupu (the kids the BIGGEST kid you've ever seen at 17, if he makes it will monster stoppages with his power) are good prospects. We've picked up some very good players second round and later choices. Also done well from rookie lists. Wright is earning his money. Might have to raise it to keep him as I think its his last year on contract in 2015.

And now, cricket. And the Essendon vs the world (according to Essendon) saga to keep us entertained over summer. Getting old when I can't enthuse for the end of summer to come this late in October.
