Subject: Richmond's trouble starts the moment the first bounce happens.

Without Maric, there's no crash through or crash hard-nuts. The loss/retirement of Tuck is being seriously missed. Yea, his skills were average but the had a truckload of determination and next to no fear they way he'd hunt down, chase, tackle. I.e he was about the only on-baller you had that didn't mind getting down and dirty in his desperation for the ball.

Cotchin, Delidio, Martin are all talented players. But when it comes to the crunch, they just don't (from my pov) seem to want to commit to any sort of play that they may come out of worse for wear. Don't tackle, don't chase, don't (can't?) put their bodies on the line when the crunch is on.

And your spine to spine, Reiwoldt aside as he does have talent, but he's petulant too and that's his downside)well, your spine is spineless.

Trade out at seasons end players that have value. Load up on early draft picks and or free agents that are in the 25 to 28 range and build a unit that will give a damn each and every time you play.

Hawthorn were like this from 2002 through to 2005, when Clarkson came in. First one out the door, Everitt. Talented yes. But who did he play for? One man only, himself. No coincidence we started playing better footy when we got rid of him and a few others like him that we started to rise again as a Footy club.

That Hardwick hasn't bought that type of discipline to the tiggers surprises me a little because he was, when at the hawks, basically second in charge answering only to Clarkson.

End of last season I was thinking "oh no, Dimma has got them playing good footy, dammit".

Now, even he can explain why it is all going wrong, given as you say, that they won 15 last year and have struggled through the first eight rounds of this season.

Maybe the Carlton loss shattered their confidence? Maybe other sides have worked out how they play? Or maybe losing a few retirees and the failure of up'n'comers to keep making progress means that they're treading water at best and lack of real confidence that they can match it with the bigboys of the league is something they just don't have anymore.

I thought when we played your lot earlier in the season it'd be tight as you've shown us up the previous two seasons. That we belted you by the margin we did (and it should have been more) might have effected the mind-set of the entire team.

1980 is a long long time ago now. More than a quarter of a century since your lot has been a real threat. To me, that's a wonderful thing given I really cannot stand Richmond because I am old enough to remember what they were like when they were good. Not something I'm in any hurry to see happen again.

But if they can't get it right, aside from brief glimpses every half-dozen seasons or so, then something is going wrong, from the Pres to the Coach to the boot-studder.

I've only got about 20 years left before i get the call up to either the sky or the other place (I'll take bets it's the other place though). Just let me live out those last 20 odd years with Richmond still trying to work out wear they're going wrong and I'll die happy.

Sorry for you on a personal level TT, but geez, I love watching your mob implode. Time and time and time again.

To borrow a phrase, Richmond struggling, "its good for football". Long may it stay that way.
