Subject: Yes, as mentioned in another post, there have been several returning 1st runner ups that failed to even place the next year.

There can always be new comers who do well (Taylor and Hanley are perfect examples.) However, they are the exception and not the rule. I think the best predictor of future success is past performance. Especially those who are consistently improving. Also, when newcomers do well I think it is very rare that they would not have been on the radar of those who frequent the locals and follow socials. You can see potential.
