Subject: 49 unidentified historical helmet designs

While doing research (which generally means examining digitized old college and university yearbooks) I occasionally run into photographs showing helmets that I cannot identify. Here's a link to a composite image showing 49 such unknown designs, with the known opposing team and apparent year of the photograph, in most cases:

https://i.imgur.com/GDuK0Nk.gif

Since the histories for the larger universities are fairly well-known now, most of these are NCAA Division II and III, and NAIA teams. Some, however, may be junior college teams, junior varsity teams, semi-pro teams, prep schools, 'alumni teams', and for the earlier years perhaps military base teams.

I present them here with the following objectives:

1) To give some idea of the wealth of interesting "unknown" designs yet awaiting "re-discovery";

2) To give some idea of how challenging it is to pin down accurate histories for teams when photographs like these are the best available;

3) To see if anybody can identify them!

Many identifications could probably be achieved simply by examining the schedules for the respective teams and using logic - if there's a "bear" on the helmet the team nickname is probably not "Eagles", etc.

There are several for which I have a fairly high suspected identity (#13 may be UBC, #34 may be Azusa Pacific) but most are a complete mystery.

Actually, it's Maryville College, from Maryville, Tennessee. I found a yearbook photo of a 1967 game vs. Maryville and it's the exact helmet in question. Maryville is known as the Scots, so that's the MS abbreviation. Missouri State was known as Southwest Missouri State in 1967, so it would have been unlikely to use the MS initials at that time. I sent the picture to Charles.

The 1978 Sewanee opponent I think is what is now Rhodes College. For much of its history, until 1984, Rhodes was known as Southwestern at Memphis (SAM). The helmet is red and Rhodes' colors are red and black.

#23 Merchant Marine, the only M school Colgate played, but it was in 1964.

#49 can't be Missouri state because that was known as SW Missouri St. at that time.

I stand corrected on #49. Thanks for pointing that out.
I had Missouri State on the brain as this same helmet (#49) can be found in the 1968 Missouri State YB.

#49 is actually Truman State. Back then they were known as Northeast Missouri State College.

See my earlier comment -- it's Maryville College from Maryville, TN; the Maryville Scots -- "MS"

#49 is definitely Truman State. The "MS" helmet is represented well in the 1968 Truman State YB. I would post some awesome pics if I could.

Maryville wore white helmets w/ a single dark stripe in 1967
(again, if I could post pics...)

So, yes, I see the same helmet in the NEMO (Truman State) yearbook too. The picture I found in the Southwest Missouri State yearbook for 1968 was mislabeled because the caption clearly says that the SWMO player is about to tackle the Maryville ball-carrier, and the ball-carrier has on that exact Truman State helmet, so it was a NEMO ball-carrier. And yes, the Maryville helmets are as described, with the single stripe. Mystery solved!

Agreed. That caption on the Missouri State photo threw me off also! Then a few pages later you see the football schedule for Missouri State in that same YB and they didn't even play Maryville that year! Awesome job on that #38 Sewanee. Some of these are frustrating to find for sure! I think I found some others but it is more of a process of elimination.

Also Maryville could have been referring to Northwest Missouri State whose located in Maryville, MO.

Thanks to everyone for looking at these! I think several have been identified already but I'll have to study each one closely to be certain.

I see that the issue of captions accompanying yearbook photographs has come up - yes, they are VERY often completely wrong! Perhaps not surprising since they were often written by 19-year-olds who had lots of other things to do and might have had a few too many beers the night before. Regard any opposing team identification in a yearbook with skepticism.

Also - while in most cases college yearbooks used a new set of photographs each year, I have on many occasions seen the same one recycled even several years after its first appearance. The indicated dates on these photographs could be false.

Likewise, the schedules printed in college yearbooks are often inaccurate. I'd recommend consulting another source if you're looking at schedules and can't find a plausible match. One really good one is:

https://michigan-football.com/

...thought it's still 'under construction' for lots of the smaller colleges.

Some bizarre-looking "logos" in some of the photographs may look weird because part of the decal is missing - torn off during some collision of helmets. That could account for #2, #36, and #47.

I'm especially curious about several of these in particular:
#5, #20, #22, #27, #29, #31, #32, and #37 (plus #38 which has probably been identified - thanks Bud!)

Some other hunches I have are as follows:

#9 may be Albright
#17 may be Wheaton
Both #30 and #35 could be Rocky Mountain College
#44 might be College of Eastern Utah (I think that may be a "CEU" on the helmet)

LOL how very true! That is an a great observation!

#5 is FDU-FLORHAM (or Fairleigh Dickinson)

Lycoming crushed them 49-0 in 1975

Not sure about 1975 but in 1976 the Knights may have only wore this logo on the right side of the helmet

#23: Colgate did not play any teams that had any kind of M in their name or nickname in 1966 (Brown, Columbia, Cornell, Holy Cross, BU, Princeton, Lehigh, Lafayette, Rutgers, Bucknell), and that was true for a number of years in either direction. Charles, are you sure that was from a Colgate game?

Sorry, it's entirely possible that I botched the documentation somewhere along the way (I've been accumulating these for several years). I might have written "Colgate" when I meant to say "Clarion" or "Cortland" or something. I vaguely remember suspecting that this might be one of the "M" Pennsylvania teams (Millersville, Mansfield, Moravian, etc).

Fortunately i didn’t screw up the information - the photograph appears on page 155 of Colgate’s 1967 yearbook:

https://digitalcollections.colgate.edu/object/studentyearbooks9987#page/1/mode/2up

Maybe that’s not actually an “M” on the side? Or maybe one player wore an “M” for some unknown reason?

I rarely pay any attention to football uniforms, but do sometimes to try to identify an opposing team. There are some stripes on the sleeve of the player in question which could prove diagnostic.

My guess is that it was a preseason scrimmage game. The white jersey has no stripes, which we assume the road jersey would have been the same design as the home (dark) jersey (back in those days), and there are no fans in the stands. And in preseason scrimmages, the teams don't necessarily wear their regular-season jerseys, anyway.

46 might be Trinity (TX) but whats throwing me off is the gold helmets.

But they had a logo that looks somewhat like the one in the pic.

I have a vague memory of thinking at one time that #46 might be Cal Lutheran, but I never did investigate it.

Do you mean the helmet in the photo is Cal Lutheran or do you mean the helmet in the photo is a team Cal Lutheran played c. 1970s? Looking at Cal Lutheran YBs they did have a logo like the one in the photo from 1977 and 1979. Seems to be only worn on the left side of the helmet. Also, in 1979, their are some photos of a darker facemask color - not gray.

I thought the gold helmet with red logo might be Cal Lutheran (playing against Texas Lutheran), but that's just based on a vague rememberance of something I saw a couple years ago. I seem to remember that there was a "50" inside the red-oval shape as seen in another photograph (50th anniversary of the CLU football team, maybe?). It's entirely possible this is completely wrong, though.

Presumably the photograph was found in a Texas Lutheran yearbook, but I didn't note the year, sorry.

Pretty sure it's not Wisconsin-Stout. They have their yearbooks online and I looked at all yearbooks from 1970-1985.
Nope. When I first seen the helmet in question I thought of Northwestern State (Louisiana). The Demons. Nope. Not them either.

I believe it might be a Viking Long Boat and the opponent is Western Washington possibly

#39 is the Washington University in St. Louis Bears.
This one was real difficult to pin down!
Not sure what the logo is.
Probably just award decals.
The #39 photo is from the 1975 yearbook though the Rochester Campus Times student newspaper was more helpful.
