I agree that we need to stop scheduling the Cal. St. Stanislaus' of the world but reality is that we'll always schedule at least one of those type of games. My hope is that we don't schedule more of them like we did this year.

In terms of an ideal schedule here is what I'd like to see. Considering an average 10 game preconference schedule I'd like to see us schedule Santa Clara, Sac. St., Nevada, Fresno St, and USF every year. They're all at least decent teams (except for maybe Sac. St.), it is fairly easy to travel to these games when they are away games, and it allows alumni in those areas to catch a game without having to drive to Stockton. To fill out the rest of the schedule I'd like to see us play Washington, Arizona St., a San Diego school (either USD or SDSU), Portland St., and New Mexico St.

Here's my rational. UW and ASU are competitive, but not elite Pac-10 schools in talent rich areas. They probably wouldn't be as scared to schedule us as the Bay Area schools would be since both Stanford and Cal have almost lost to us in recent history. Plus, there is the recruiting aspect of getting exposure in Seattle and Phoenix. A game against one of the San Diego schools is good for the alumni in S.D. who can't make a game in Norcal or the OC/LA area. Plus, both USD and SDSU are competitive programs at this point. Portland St. gives us exposure in Portland for recruiting purposes, and New Mexico St. is a solid mid-major club that wouldn't be difficult to schedule. All of these schools would provide a better rated schedule than most of the ones we've had in the past. It maximizes alumni and recruiting exposure, and there is a decent chance at being able to get home and homes with all of these schools. This schedule probably isn't good enough to earn us an at-large bid, but the reality of the situation is that we'd never get an at-large bid anyway, no matter how deserving we were.

While we're on the subject of scheduling I'd also like to see us play in more preseason tournaments, either the big exempted kind like the NIT, Alaskan Shootout, etc. or the tourney in New Mexico and Nebraska that we've participated in the last couple of years. I also agree with you McGeorge in that I think we need to suck it up sometimes and take a game on the road at at Pac-10/Mountain West school without the guarantee of a home game in return.

Anyway, those are my thoughts. Laparka316 do you have any thoughts on scheduling?
