RECEIVERS CALLED IN AT TOP POTTERY
The workers at an internationally-famous Devon tea pottery were today facing an
uncertain future after receiving news that it had been put up for sale.
Cardew Design, based in Bovey Tracey, has been forced to call in the receivers after
failing to recover from a business slump.
And around half the staff at the firm - which employs more than 50 - could lose
their jobs.
Managing director Peter Kirvan said it was "disappointing news" for the business,
which has operated for around 13 years.
A failed venture into the American market involving Disney characters has been
partly blamed for the collapse.
Last year the company struck a major £620,000 deal with leading US hobby craft
company Janlynn to distribute its products to the vast US market.
Mr Kirvan said: "This is obviously very disappointing news, particularly for our
loyal staff, some of whom will be losing their jobs as a result."
Cardew Design, at Bovey Tracey, which distributes hundreds of thousands of novelty
teapots and is a key Teignbridge tourist attraction, has called in receivers after
failing to recover from a business slump.
Managing director Peter Kirvan said it was disappointing news, "particularly for
our loyal staff". Around half the 50-plus workers could lose their jobs at the
firm which has been going for about 13 years.
Last night Mr Kirvan said: "We will be concentrating assets we have as a company,
namely our Bovey Tracey visitor attraction and our pottery painting activities,
which are now being sold round the UK."
A company spokesman added that a poor summer's trading was also partly to blame
for the firm failing.
The London-based firm of Menzies Corporate Restructuring has been appointed as the
receiver.
If you have ordered anything from Cardew, and have not received the items the
telephone number is 01626 832172, also if you are thinking of ordering any teapots
etc, please ring before doing so, to check whether they have the stock.
