I don't think that the article was particularly well-written and the point of the author (that parents were doing doing their kids a disservice since discrimination still exists) was sort of grafted onto the inflammatory background story. The author was obviously courting controversy, although his point wasn't really that controversial. It acknowledged that racism still existed and that when some people "hear" a "black" name they consciously/unconsciously behave differently. You did notice that the author was black, right?

Anyway, while presented in a controversial manner, I don't really think it was very controversial.
