the mid-term bounce, while rare, does not create a mandate, in my mind. That reversal of fortune speaks to the ongoing war on terror and the potential war with Iraq. I think in this case, the proclivity to rally around the president in a time of war trumped the mid-term dealie. I mean, let's be honest, with all the problems domestically, how likely is it that Bush would be carrying such high approval ratings without the bin Laden effect and the intense media focus on Iraq?

I also believe that the Republicans ran a much better campaign than the Democrats -- much better. Their efforts, including getting Bush out there on the stump over the last week, gave them some key victories in close states. They also did a much better job of getting their people to vote, which speaks to a more energized base as opposed to a wholesale wooing of the independents/moderates.

I just don't see the mandate and think the Republicans would be making a big mistake if they act as if they have one.
