In reply to: Desert Fox 's message, "+ears prick at the sound of the mare's laugh+" on 13:40:45 04/25/03 Fri

At the sound of her name she turned her attention away from Rush and toward- Whoever had said her name, his voice sounded vaguely familiar. In fact, it reminded her of someone, someone from long ago. A dear someone, but he had long since been dead. She was never going to see him again, no matter how much she wanted to. Or how much it broke her heart not to see his easygoing smile or feel the touch of his skin on hers, or… She had never recovered from the ‘death’ of her childhood friend. Fox had been much more than her best friend, he had been her brother, playmate, confidant, and her source of comfort and wisdom. Of all the influences in her life, his and her mother’s were the two that stood out most and had had the greatest impact on her life. She had loved them both very much. She snorted in contempt. How dare life play tricks on her like that, it was cruel and mean. She had spent her entire life, up until this point, trying to forget her childhood friend. Why, only now, turn around and remind her of something that she would for the rest of her life be without? It wasn’t fair, it wasn’t right.

“No, it can’t be… You’re dead; you’ve been dead for the past three years. You’re not real; you’re a fragrant of my imagination.”

It hurt to think about it, so she chose not to. She chose, instead, to ignore it. To ignore the voice in her head, to pretend that it wasn’t there, that it didn’t mean anything to her. But it’s so hard to forget sometimes, so very hard.

“Rush, you don’t know what you’re talking about. Desert Fox is, he isn’t alive, he isn’t- And even if he were, I wouldn’t want to see him. I never want to see him again. And I never want you to mention his name in my presence again either. I don’t know how you knew him but trust me, its better for both of us if we forget that he ever existed. If you let it, the past can come back and haunt you. We must not allow it to. Instead, we must be strong; we must not weaken under the weight of our misfortunes. We must hold our heads high and go forward with our lives.”

That’s what she was trying to do, had been trying to do since she returned to Destiny Falls and even before then, or rather especially before then. She shut her eyes, and held them closed. She was afraid to open them, afraid of what she would see. Afraid of whom she would see. She did not think that her heart was strong enough to withstand such a test of courage. Her eyes were already moist and her cheeks, although not yet damp with tears, soon would be.

“Fox?”

Her voice quavered just ever so slightly, but if you were observant enough, you would be able to tell for yourself that she was under a great deal of strain. So great that her delicate body, despite its well-toned muscles, was beginning to shake because of it. If Fox really was alive…
