She didn’t shy away from him, didn’t turn her head to the side or look away. Instead, she met his eyes, her own brown ones sympathetic. She could understand why he’d be angry; he had every right to be. But she had had every right to do what she had done. “That depends. What do you want me to do? Stay, or go.” Her heart ached; Fox was in pain. And she was the reason for that pain. Damn her. Damn her heart. Emotions complicated things. Life would be so much easier if everyone was incapable of feeling. And so much more boring. She preferred it the way it was. “If I had a reason to stay...” What was she saying, Fox was her reason. Wasn’t he? Maybe if he asked her to stay, she would. If she knew that she meant something to him, really meant something to him, then she wouldn’t be able to bear to leave him. But he’d never told her how much she meant to him. He’d never told her that he loved her. She had always taken it for granted. But maybe that was the problem. She needed to hear him say it, to hear him say ‘I love you.’ Charity had always loved him, ever since she could remember. She assumed that they’d one day be mates. It was fate; it was their destiny to be together, until the end of eternity. But destiny doesn’t always work out according to as planned. Maybe it wouldn’t, in their case. It looked that way, unless someone stepped up and interfered.
