Hello, My name is Jennifer. I am 25 yrs old and I live in Gettysburg, Pa. I have had severe struggles with reading when I was younger. Academics have been extremely hard. I have managed to complete my Associates degree this past June after 4 long years. I started at a University this year and have been noticing my academic struggles getting worse or maybe they are showing up more bc of the demanding course work. Almost as if Im regressing. I have been having more problems spelling. Simple words. Words I should know. Im switching i's and e's around. Leaving letters out. Trying to spell the words the way I pronounce them. I even read words like their spelled which has been embarrassing when I read aloud and make a noticeable mistake in front of my peers. I have also been doing assignments wrong because I dont "read" the questions right. I feel as though someone has changed the question after I turned in my paper or test. My memory has always been bad, but is getting worse bc I have to be very selective that I feel like I cant retain all this information. This has been taking a toll on my relationship because I cant remember centimental things about our previous experiences unles he "jogs" my memory. Still, I cant remember everything. I have had these issues before, but never this bad. I feel as though Im falling apart.
I want to get tested to see if I possibly have dyslexia. I just dont know where to go for a health provider in regards to specifically diagnosing dyslexia in adults? I dont want some doctor who is not going to take this seriously. I was overlooked throughout my younger years in school. Finally diagnosed with ADD when I was 19 and now Im starting to think there is more to this picture. I want a clear and acurrate diagnosis. Im mentally and emotionally drained from all of the problems I have to overcome on a daily basis. Ive been overcoming obsticals my entire life and Im exhausted. I just want a answer so I can come to terms if this is what I have and get the support I need from my family.
Thank you
-Jennifer

Jennifer,
Hang in there girl. I am 53 year old PE teacher. I have been teaching for 31 years. I have my Masters and I
understand a lot of Spanish. (I taught in the Dominican
Republic for five years when I was young.) Learning a different language is not easy for most people. For a person with dyslexia, his first language is a nightmere.
I am not saying you are dyslexic, however, what you say in your message is exactly how I feel every single day. I was tested for dyslexic when I was college age at the University of Buffalo. With help from friends, I got through college. I didn't use my dyslexia to get extra help in college. I was too embarrass to admit that I was dyslexic. What a shame, I could have used the extra help.
I wish I had had this site when I was your age. It helps me just to read other people's stories and realize I am not the only one going through this torture (it just took me 5 minutes to figure out how to spell "torture" :)
I also just got back from an appointment only to get there and discover that the appointment is not until next Monday.
Welcome to my world. I do know that when I get nervous or
very frustrated, the situation that I am in-whatever it is, gets a whole lot worse. If someone askes me the name of my orthopedic doctor or my dentist, I can't tell them
unless I have recently seen them. That goes for just about everything that I have to remember.
I do know that dyslexic people have a lot of tenacity and if we are smart (and we are) we develop a sense of humor about the whole thing. So hang in there girl.
Some day I am going to ask God- What the hell did he think he was going when he gave someone dyslexia! He must like to have a good laugh.

Yes, I do the same thing! I go to appointments or meetings and they end up being on a different day. Its very embarrassing to have to explain why I missed an important event. I have a hard time adjusting to a new schedule each semester. Its half way through the semester before I know all my classes and I sat in the wrong class before bc I mixed up my monday class with my thursday class. I also can remember people.I have to see a picture or something if its been awhile. Its like the (tip of the tongue phenomenon *googled that spelling. But it occurrs 24-7). As for college they do not offer accomidations other than more time for taking test (which I do need bc its hard to fully read, comprehend, and answer questions on long exams like mid-terms and finals) They also allow a quite room for taking tests. That is it. No other accomidations. I do know in primary school they would have read things out to me and made sure I fully understood the questions before answering them. I dropped out of highschool when I was sixteen because I was failing every subject. I had been held back in 6th grade and again in 8th. I was tired and just couldnt grasp academics. Now that Im older I have been able to make myself focus, and work through the frustration. I would like help for when I am a teacher. I heard if I get a proper diagnosis from a physician, I can have a mentor to look over my work. Because I make these "weird" "careless" <-- but not careless bc I do try my best. But, bc I make mistakes, I am afraid parents will notice and get upset bc Im teaching their children. I should know how to spell and write properly. But, if I cant catch my own mistakes, I would like a mentor to take a look over my monthly news letter before I send it home to the parents to read. So my main concern is for my career. The only Ive ever wanted to be is an Elementary Teacher and I have literally dedicated my life to this dream!

Hi

Firstly, I really want to applaud your bravery, you are being so bold in personal honesty, many people shy away from this but you are tackling it head on - you sound a very super person!

I don't know how the referral system works in USA, but in UK it tends to be schools and colleges / universities that support students with a different learning style (that's all dyslexia is, a different way of learning, people with dyslexia don't fail, often schools etc fail students for inflexible teaching that doesn't reach all class).

I would hope there was a confidential chain of support within your new learning environment, that can reasure you, that can call upon professionals (educational psychologists in UK) that can help identify all your many brilliant strengths and advise upon areas of difficulty.

Please do not feel overwhelmed, the more stress you feel, the more your memory will let you down, the more you begin to doubt yourself the more your subconscious mind will be recreating a negative opinion of yourself.

Please become a good kind loving friend to you, if there was a friend of yours struggling this way - you would be there to support and love them, please be this friend to yourself. You define who you are, don't let tiredness, fear, or dyslexia or anything tell you who you are, they may influence how you are, but they are NOT who you are.

You sound a truly remarkable person, I wish you peace, strength and a very happy life.

Please find a trusted person to liase with (teacher , counsellor, other professional) who can lead you through this process.

All my love to you.

N, UK.
