Hi,

I was wondering if anyone has studied for a degree with the open university firstly or just a degree in general and has any suggestions regarding remembering what you read and writing in your own words?

I still need to have my assessment but I can't afford it at the moment as I have only seen it for £500!!

Thanks in advance

A few months ago I decided to look up the meaning of dyslexia. I can’t convey my astonishment in finding that just about every dyslectic trait person may have, mirrors the challenges I faced all my life. I somehow manage to complete grade school, high school and at 29, college. Throughout my career in engineering, I solved many issues, and by thinking outside of the box I was able to invent new design concepts. But not all was perfect. I was frustrated because I could have further advanced the technology if I was a better communicator. I now wonder if I had known I was dyslectic then, could I have been able to work around the issues that held me back. I did enjoy working in the engineering environment.

Hi,

I have just read a new book called 'The Deceitful Dyslexic' by Alex Nile on my Kindle, its a good read about a dyslexic in the workplace who goes through a personal discovery of why he does things.

Its an ebook - http://www.amazon.co.uk/Alex-Nile/e/B0076WCJRC/ref=ntt_athr_dp_pel_1

If you don't have a kindle you can still read it on your pc/mac, as amazon have a downloadable app:
http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/feature.html/ref=kcp_pc_mkt_lnd?docId=1000423913

------------
Product Description
This book tell the story of David, an unidentified dyslexic who believes he is stupid and lazy, well that’s what everyone including his teachers called him at school. No one diagnosed him growing up and he slipped through the net for diagnosis at school. He lies to cover up for his inadequacies, and then he forgets what and who he has said these lies to, which gets him into trouble and has wrecked many personal relationships.

Seeing a new counselling practice opening by work, where he is a lowly accounts clerk, he asks what counselling could offer him, to see if he really is stupid and lazy. He wants to discover the truth. His journey is tracked in this book, as he discovers why he lies so much to cover up his difficulties. He investigates if his lies are in fact a mask, and why he might use it to protect himself and those around him.

In his journey of truth he falls in love, is diagnosed by an educational psychologist, goes to college to improve his literacy and numeracy skills, and deals with the many challenges of disclosure at work.

His relationship with his mother and siblings begins to be investigated, which sheds light on why he began to be a secret dyslexic in the first place, hiding his difficulties by lie after lie.

I am 27 years old, and I have always had a rough time with reading and writing. I am highly intelligent and this pasted year I just received my Ph.D. in chemistry. I made it through HS and 9 years of college without reading a single book and with having great proof readers who understand my writing. When I was two years old I had to go speech therapy classes because I couldn’t pronounce words. When I got to elementary school my teachers suggested to my parents I should be evaluated; however, my mom didn’t want to hear I had a learning disability. It is extremely difficult for me to pronounce first time words and I can’t sound out words while spelling. If I ask someone how to spell a word it’s difficult for me to transfer the letters I hear to paper. When it comes to reading I have to read paragraphs three or more time to understand the context and in most cases it becomes too difficult that I have to stop reading. I was wondering what where peoples thoughts? Also, where could I go to get help?

I just found this site and I am looking for any info anyone wants to share. My brother has been diagnosed with dyslexia since he was 6 yrs old, he is now 50. I'm sure there is more to his story than I know, but this is all I know. He has depression and a very short fuse, he is also a little awkward in social situations. He is so quick to get angry and has lost several jobs because of this. I'm trying so hard to help, but it is feeling very useless. Does anyone know what resources are available to us in Memphis? Thanks for any help you may have. Alese

My question is related to dyslexia and writing. I enjoy writing - that is, being able to relate certain experiences through the written word. The problem is that I I often get a large headache after even small periods of doing any writing. Does anyone have any suggestions for ameliorating this condition - that is, to be able to write without getting a headache?

Wow! I just want to thank everyone for sharing such person information about themselves and their families. I am an elementary teacher and to tell the truth, I am amazed at how many kids and adults have dyslexia. I will now look at my class make up a lot differently. I will take more time to assess kids that may take longer to complete their work or work through assignments and tests or show difficulties in reading or writing processing. I can't help but feel I must have failed some of my past students as I was unaware of the difficulties and struggles they were going through. I know now what to look for and how to help and support these kids.

This is good as I can add things on the go as and when I think of them. It's linked to my work PC so when I'm in the office it all apears on the sreeen. However I find the buttons and screen on the Blackbery rather small and fiddily to use. Iv'e heard that Pocket Pc's are realy good and helpful for people with Dyslxia and wondered if any one had used one and what they thought of it?

Hi everyone. Well i read some of the posts and its nice to see more people just like me! I am dyslexic and to be honest i wouldn't be anything else. Where i struggle with the written word, i make up for in imagination and an ability to grasp the whole idea of concepts.

We are a group of natural problem solvers and imaginative thinkers. *(this is what society is screaming out for at the moment).

I got my degree and anything else i put my mind to as dyslexics are also very determined. Anyone worried about their children with dyslexia shouldn't! You have amazing children, play to their strengths and watch them thrive.

My boyfriends has dyslexia and while he has managed well in his career it has been painful as his kids are learning to read and he can't help them. As well, he feels like he is missing out by not being able to read them stories at night. He has great imagination when it comes to interpreting pictures into stories and thought it would be terrific gift to get him picture books. I have been searching everywhere for something for him to be able to enjoy the bedtime story but can't find anything!!! Does anyone have any suggestions? Thanks so much.

My particular form of dyslexia manifests itself as an ability to read (i.e. not mix up letters, understand all vocabulary and read out loud fluently) but an inability to understand what I am reading. It has always seemed quite strange to me and I am wondering what kind of strategies one might recommend for ameliorating this situation. Common ways that I've found on-line for dealing with comprehension issues involve higher levels of meta-cognition - (i.e. making inferences, self-summary, asking question, all common ways for dealing with reading problems imply that one is able to de-code the text well enough to be able to understand what one is reading and eventually put it together into a meaningful cohesive whole). Any ideas would be much appreciated. Thanks a lot!

In our newsletter this week, the West Cork Local, we have an article and a 30 minute video on the symptoms and corrective procedures for Dyslexia, by kinesiologist Robin Wells. The link to this is www.localcampus.com/westcorklocal.html, and it is on page 8. Robin really helped me enormously with a different type of ailment so I can wholeheartedly recommend him. Please share this with any parents who think that their children might be dyslexic, or any adults with the condition.

My daughter is just 6 and had glue ear as a toddler, this caused problems with her learning sounds and concentration.

She has had difficulty reading/writing and although I have managed to get her reading I notice a lot of the words she reads are guesswork or memory although she is doing so much better with her reading having had special help at school and reading at home. Her writing however is pretty much non-existent, it is not her ability to write as if I tell her each letter to write, she will do it quite well but she gets b/d confused and s round the wrong way and sometimes writes the whole word back to front, but she will not write independently and on the rare occasion she does it is ineligible. Does anyone here relate to this with a diagnosed dyslexic child? She is otherwise quite a bright child and so lovely and kind that I want to make sure I don't let her down as she is becoming quite frustrated that she is not able to do what other children in the class can. Any opinions, advice, welcome.

I am 40 years old and was diagnoised as being dyslexic a few years ago. This came to light when i attempted to sit and pass a diploma for my current proffestional job role. I had failed misserably, and since that time have tried different routes such as open assessments which is similar to exam questions but have two weeks to answer these questions. I had also failed this on 3 occastions. I have voice speaking software etc but find it hard to use as this software requires alot of training for it to recognise what i am saying and takes even longer for me to write letters/reports etc. I feel that i have to just except that i cannot succeed acedemically but as a result would leave me in a vunerable position in the future if i either get made redundant or want to move on. I am in a proffestional job but do not have the qualifications to back up my experiance. I want to know if anyone out there nows any other way that i can overcome my failures in being able to pass written exam papers to allow me to be fully recognised proffestional.

Hi, I am a 55-year-old Contracting Officer at a government agency in Maryland area. I do not know if I have dyslexia, however if dyslexia is defined of having trouble of pronounce the correct word or writing the right words, well I been dealing with dyslexia my whole life and some how I have been able to be successful in my job.

I have a lot of trouble with spelling, and pronouncing words, I do not have trouble of retaining and processing information when I read, however I do have problem of pronounce a word or spelling of a word. I do lot of writing in my field, what has helped me is that I would have my writing edit at a writing services it can be expense, however I had to do what I needed to do in order to get the job done. My husband been very supportive, he has helped me a lot. However I am at the point now I want to get help, if this is my problem. I want to be a better read and be able to write without someone else editing my writing, I want to be able to read aloud in a class without having the embarrassment of pronouncing a word wrong.

Is there a treatment center in the Maryland area that been successful with Adults having Dyslexic Adults?

Hi there,

I'm in my 30s and with Dyslexia; I knew I had it since I was a teenager but never brought attention to it as I wanted to "blend".

I am now currently study after my working hours for a master and I took the step of having it diagnosed and officially registered. Now I wish somebody would have noticed it when I was little so my performance and marks would be much more better. So would have been my confidence (I always felt a bit slow like dumb).
Now I have decided I want to take an IQ test to boost my confident; to prove to myself that I'm ok.

I am having difficulties finding where can I do an IQ test that takes into account being dyslexic.

Please if someone have any information it would be very appreciated.

Hello, my name is Kendall and I am a Psychology major at Washington College in Maryland. I am currently conducting my senior thesis about whether dyslexia has any underlying effects on facial recognition. Part of my experiment is to have people take a facial recognition test. I have scoured the Internet for facial recognition test and have found a few good ones. I was wondering if a few fine people who contribute to this forum could take about 15 minutes of their time to perhaps take the following test and post their results. The test is quite simple. You'll see two sets of 12 photos and then be asked to identify whether you had seen the photos at the end. The link is posted below:

I would greatly appreciate any participation. If anyone would like to add any ideas/comments about my study, I welcome it. Thanks for your time.

Hi to everyone
I am a 52 year old woman with dyslexia. I struggled all through school, I knew I had a problem but what it was, had no idea. Only in my early 40's I came across a book in the library about dyslexia, after reading it I knew that this was what I suffered from. Now it is not only me, but my brother who also suffers; only from a more severe form of dyslexia. Our mother also has dyslexia and so we must of inherited it from her. The learning disability has cause large problems for all three of us. I have only had a job for three years of my life and it was boring. I never got any further education and have struggled to find jobs. My brother and I made pottery till that died out because no one was interested any more. My brother turned to computers and found his niche but dyslexia is still a problem. Because he is to slow he does not get enough jobs to sustain a living. And he has to double even triple check his work. For me I have just given up, maybe I will write a book. Thank goodness for computers they help a lot. I wish they where a round when I was a school, I would of being an ace at school work. I just remembered something, how many of you where told to look in the dictionary for a word; and wondered how you where going to find the word if you could not spell or pronounce it correctly. What help is a dictionary to a Dyslectic?

I know I have a good case of Dyslexia but never really had an official diagnosis past when our daughter was tested some years ago I took it as well just for the heck of it they told me I was textbook. But I never got any sort of report or anything. Not sure what “textbook” is. But the last while I’ve been on the band wagon and doing some investigation on my own. I phoned the American Dyslexic Association (or something like that) and asked what can I do in my mid 50’s. Their response was “nothing, its too late and you probably have learned to live with it”. Wow...so I didn’t bother clicking on that “donate” tab on their site.

So does anyone know if you're older and want to gain some information on what's going on in the old noggin, is there any recourses available? I’m just curious on how a page of text can become a mess of unreadable garbage then all of a sudden turn into words. Or why My car radio knobs I cant just reach for...I have to think about which one is which for a second. Or why I try to read a book and I cant keep focused and I’m thinking of something else. Or To understand a long email I have to read it 10 times. Or....we I’m sure everyone knows the list. I know enough to understand the brain is a complex piece of equipment and much of what happens in there is not 100% known. I’d just like to have someone smart sit me down and say “this is your brain....this is your brain with dyslexia” . Cant believe the answerer is too old..too late.

Hi,
This is my 1st message on any internet site.
I found this page because I wanted to know if other
dyslexic individuals are as tired and dispirited as I am
about my dyslexia.
Frankly, I find it hard to find much to celebrate about
being dyslexic. I find I have pretty much all the symtoms
of being dyslexicthat I have read from other people. The one symtom I have that drives me to distraction is my short term memory. I don't notice that others write about that. There are people that I have worked with that I will see a few years later and I know I should know
them, but, I can't place them. Wow, is that embarrassing.
Is there anyone else with this problem? I would love to hear from you.
Kim

I was diagnosed with dyslexia in my forties when I returned to college. I am now 70. I have undergone chemotherapy as cancer treatment and had what is referred to as chemo brain- a temporary cognitive challenge. I also have sleep apnea and hypothyroidism. Aside from this, I seem to be functioning at the level of my peers who are older and without dyslexia. How would I know from my history if I am developing other cognitive challenges related to age? If I took a standard test, I would have failed even at 20 because I do not retain information- even though I consider myself to be bright and creative. Are there any others out there my age who would like to communicate with me? Now I can blame everything on my age as it has been a life long struggle to feel normal.

My son is a 21 year old college student with severe dyslexia. He can read however cannot spell. He also cannot do higher level math because of his short term memory problems. He is getting through his courses with a lot of work and most of it is absolute torture. He is not coordinated so working with his hands is not a path for him. He isnt artistic either. He is a wonderful sweet person and everyone loves him - he is great with people. He is very worried about his future and has lost hope that anyone will give him a job or that he will be able to support a family. I would appreciate any ideas about career options for him. I am also wondering if anyone knows of any career counselors that could help him- or even if there is such a thing. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

PS sorry about my spelling

All suffering with dyslexia need to be aware of Crossinology, Brain Integration Technique, a revolutionary process that permanently improves the flow of information in the brain without medication. The technique has been shown to successfully correct Scotopic Sensitivity Syndrome and other dyslexia problems. For more information see the following websites. crossinology.com and pthutah.com

The technique is also used to treat ADD, ADHD, and autism.
It enhances learning abilities, and improves reading, comprehension, and spelling.

I was able to drive confidently, but naturally a little nervous, the problem for my lays with not passing the theory test, in the UK I failed it 3times each time id fail by 1 point.
Now I've immigrated to the US I must drive, my husband is in the military and its vital for myself and the children I learn. But the very thought of picking up the book freaks me out, the past years of failure concerning driving has done zero for my confidence and all this because I'm dyslexic, can anyone offer some advice, id appreciate it. I read through a lot of your posts on dyslexia and found that the most common problems that parents have with the schools are 1) difficulty getting their child tested, 2) difficulty getting corrective services and support, and 3) teachers and school board that are not complying. I am very interested in advocating for children with dyslexia and their families, and would love to know how I would be able to help in the future. Please respond with suggestions. Thank you!

I find that I often type with dyslexia syndrome.
For example I'll type a 'r' for a 'u' or other letters with the opposite hand/finger; or I'll type 're' instead of 'er' and frequently transpose ei for ie and have to constantly correct myself. E.G. most often I'll type becasue instead of because. I'm 57. Is this an aging thing or a form of mild dyslexia? BTW I've done it all my life but seem to be doing it more as I age. I also transpose numbers by space, e.g., I'll type 54 instead of 45.

Any ideas?

I think I sort of posted on the wrong area the first attempt but that’s dyslexia kicking in I guess. Probably a bit confused. So I'm not sure why I’m here other than I need to vent. I’m in my mid 50’s and never really been diagnosed with Dyslexia other than being told I was when I inadvertently took the test when our daughter had it about 18 or so years ago. I went to school in the 60’s and 70’s when teachers had no training in anything other than teaching smart kids. Unfortunately my days in the school system have left me with little respect for teachers. Took me a number of extra years to make it through to grade 12 and I can honestly say it was probably a complete waist of time. I am basically self taught in everything I do. Reading, math etc are systems I figured out on my own. So all my life I have struggled with the classic dyslexic problems of spelling and reading and comprehension. I have a couple other things I have no idea what they are called but I think linked to dyslexia. My hand writing is so bad I cant read it and I always new the problem was my fingers were out of sync with my brain and what was being sent to them wasn’t what was happening. Also I see things mixed up but only things that require some sort of comprehension like reading or some card games or as simple as changing the radio station in the car. It takes a bit to get sorted where the knobs are. Page of text is just a mess for a few seconds. More stress there is the worse it is. If I read something in front of people the book or page has no actual words. Just garble. I have done well in life and make more than enough money and quite happy that in school I'm sure the teachers voted me most likely to fail and in reality I probably make more than most in my graduating class. Certainly more than the idiot teachers. So...dyslexia has some advantages in that I most certainly problem solve and process information differently than so called intelligent people. And I’ve learnt to manage the difficult issues and have developed ways to bypass the difficult tasks associated with being dyslexic. But I find as I get older I really get sick of hiding the fact I am completely confused sometimes. I also find I am really pissed off at what we loosely called teachers back in the 60”s and 70”s. Quite unfair but I still have no respect for teachers what so ever and I feel dyslexia and I’m sure other learning disabilities are not something you can understand by reading about it. A dyslexic teacher teaching dyslexics maybe but other than that I don’t think they “get it”.

I was sent to a mentally handicapped class I was never diagnosed correctly until the 12 grade.

My guess my question to the form is as anyone had any success with any training programs or exercises to increase reading and spelling capability.

I will be 50 this year and always knew something wasn't quite right with me as far as my reading and writing. In early gradeschool I was given a special test because I could not get my letters right bd and 5's. I transposed a lot and still do and couldn't read byond about the third grade level till I was about 20. Thank God for racy books.

I remember being asked to draw loops and some other stuff. My brother is intelecually challanged and so I figured they thought I was too. As soon as I told my mom about the test she freaked and nothing was ever said about it after that.

Nothing was ever done either. I hurts me to realize my parents were more interested in hiding this disability than they were in helping me learn to read. It's amazing what Shame can do to people.

I can't sepell my way out of a box and even when I know how to spell a word..... I don't see transposissions when I make them. That is always fun in a public situation.

I looked into getting tested for this so I would have an official diagnosis but it cost so stinking much, and when reading the symptoms I realized there is no doubt in my mind I am dyslexic.

In the end.... It feels good to have a reason I just can't get it right. It feels good to know I am not stupid and know that no matter how hard I try... I will always have some mistakes that I can't controle, and it's not because I am lazy and it's not my fault.

In one sence it sucks to have this but it is a releif to know WHY I am the way I am.

I hope you all have a great day.

I recently published a new book using a new display technology called ErgoText, which is both ergonomic and heuristic (improves learning power) in nature. At a recent convention showing the book two purchasers happened to be Dyslexic and announced (paraphrased) "Wow! I can read this no problem!" A bit of dialog convinced me aspects of ErgoText may hold a key to resolving Dyslexia and other reading issues.

So I contacted two other Dyslexics I knew and let the try it. They also said something similar. Between the four, there were three types of Dyslexics. Encouraged, I contacted the ErgoText inventors (ergodox.com) and as result they are offering a 'comparative reading challenge' - a kind of test for persons with reading difficulties (or not) to try to evaluate if the notion is true, and if so, to what extent, and to see if further scientific study or R&D is warranted to amplify or confirm any such ability.

To participate (about 5 minutes for normal readers) visit ergodox.com.

They are offering a free print-your-own writing paper to all who do participate, though one can choose to be anonymous if they wish. The writing paper uses the same technology principles and thus should make handwriting easier to read as well, especially as the writer gets used to it. My own handwriting is much better for it, I assure you.

If you want to know more about the book, it is a sci-fi called In Mindless Times - learn more at proparanoidpress.com, currently the only outlet for the book (ISBN number not yet published).

I have never heard the world "dyslexic" until today afternoon (i am 31 now)...when i was told that "for sure u r dyslexist and i am sorry but i should have told you much earlier". The story is that i just finished my PhD thesis...i shouldnot tell how much of my engery and time of life it took...but when everything went okay finally i got the most terrible mistakes. The title of the book was spelt wrong...along with the invitation letter having spelling mistakes...and yes..cermony was spelt wrongly twice and differently. I normally ask my supervisors to have a look at my written text but for these i thought is simple and i cannot make it wrong. But well..it come with spell mistakes. and i heard this word...now i google it...i found some online tests.... i can see many of the symptoms in myself which are there. But i had more problem with English language ...which is my third language...i have very little or hardly any problem with other two lanugages i know (its Urdu and Pashto). And now i am wondering...if i am Dyslexist or not..my supervisor told me..i am for sure..and he had observed that from the texts i am writing from last few years during my PhD...can someone help me to clearfy the things... i will be very thankful.

I know there are several to choose from, but I’m not really interested in loading my pc up with a bunch of apps and doing the trial and error myself if I don’t need to. Ahahahahaha!

Why did you choose the reader you are using?

What is important to you about the reader you are using?

Are some better than others?

Should I select a Pro one or a Free one?

I think one that has a good rhythm and word accuracy would be important to me???

BTW, I am new to this group and was just recently tested for dyslexia. I PASSED!

hi,

My son is dyslexic and ADD. We are just in he beginning. He has jus turned 9 and I am battling the school for them to test his dyslexia and get him the help (they are required to do so but for some reason the principal refuses). By the way I have gone and done some preliminary leg work with experts in the field who are in agreement that he REALLy needs testing. Unfortuantely I cannot afford to get this done privately or get him in a private school or pay for private tutoring so need the school support on this.

I am feeling very overwhelmed and just need fellow parents of dyslexic children to just talk to, get info from. I did just start a blg to help vent and share it is brand new but if you want to just talk

I am 28. I have always done decently in school and college, though have always struggled somewhat in reading and spelling. My job requires a lot of data entry, and when I started I had a lot of errors. I have improved a Lot over the years. Recently I have taken on a new project, and all the difficulties have shown back up. I transpose number and letters, and read words as different words. Even when checking my work, I don't catch all my mistakes, as I often transpose when I read aloud, so it looks correct. Other things that have always been issues are reading new words, large words, or people's names. I have to re- read 3 or 4 times, and even then I often am pronouncing the word wrong. Sometimes, I have to read a section over a few times to understand it. I seem to get distracted or lose focus of it isn't something interesting. My Job is in jeopardy over all of this. I've never thought I had a problem until working here. Is it normal for someone to review information ( names, addresses, phone numbers) 3 or 4 times and not catch all errors? It is frustrating. People think I careless or lazy, but I am really trying my best!

I am an admission representative for a technical college. Even though our students have hands on learning, there is still ample amount of reading to do. I have just enrolled a mature student with this disability and I would like to be able to help him as much as possible. I just don't know where to start.
His first awareness was when he was 11 he is now 40 and has not had any formal rehabilitation for his disability and he is eager to get help.
Can anyone recommend what I can do to assist the student?

Our 10 year old grandson has finally received a medical diagnosis of Phonological Dyslexia and is getting help through his public school and a private tutor. He is also very musical and I'm wondering if we can help him by using a xylophone. His hearing is excellent and his memory great. He's also top in his fourth grade class in math. His guitar teacher tells us he hears the teacher play the song once and then our grandson can play the song even though he can't read the notes of the music because each line and staff has a letter name. Anyone ever tried using musical instruments with dyslexia children and/or adults? Thanks! Joy

I have a son with Dyslexia and ADD, he is 11 years old. I absolutely adore him and wish I could fix all his issues if I could. We have been very diligent over the past 5/6 years to get a diagnosis and stay on top of all his need both medically and emotionally. I constantly feel like a failure because I find myself constantly arguing with my son. I know that children with this type of diagnosis are prone to low self esteem and I don't want to add to it but sometimes it is sooo frustrating because he acts silly/bugs his younger brother and seems to push me until we have a blow up ! I end up feeling bad that I just didn't walk away from it because I end up saying things that I regret later ! I love him soo much and I don't want to add to him feeling bad about himself but it is so hard sometimes and we... both his father and try our very best but it never seems to be good enought for him ! He is a wonderful boy that I want to help and I certainly don't want to be arguing with him.....I only want to build him up ! Frustrated Mom

Im a 25 yr old presentable and educated woman. I have just started taking my drivers ed course and it takes me atleast 10 seconds to realize that i have 2 "turn left" when my instructor tells me to unlike others with me in my course who have no problems reacting to left and right instructions. There were many who told me during my teenage years that i might be dyslexic but academically i did well in school so i never bothered looking it up until now. As a child until first grade i was unable to hold a pencil in my hand, i also had problems doing math calculations unlike my younger siblings who could even solve my problems. But i was sent to a very strict math tutor who used to beat me up so badly that finally i did start solving some problems enough to promote me to the next grade, but to date math still gives me a hard time. Also when i was 6-7 yrs old i and started learning big words, i couldnt convey them as i started stuttering. When my dad found that out, he was furious thinking i was doing it for fun or picked it up from someone in school and again i was was beaten up for stuttering. This made me lose all my confidence and even now if i have something on my mind and i realize that saying those words/sentence is going to make me stutter, i simply never say what i want to. I still hide my stuttering problem. I also find socializing difficult and many think im a snob. Now that im finally learning how to drive, i find myself unable to react to rite or left immediately like others do and thats why i really want to know if im dyslexic. My husband keeps nagging at me 4 not knowing how to drive and that so many people can drive so y cant i? Im also concerned that if this is a genetically transmitted problem, what are the chances of any of my children getting it? I dont want them to suffer like i did. My husband doesnt know about my stuttering problem and after all the nagging, i really dont want him to know that maybe iam dyslexic, i'd rather cry over my husbands nagging.... its really depressing, am i really dyslexic? can anyone tell me what to do and how to gain my confidence on the roads?

The training is all on the company's web/intranet as replays. I am not grasping the training and am afraid to go to HR. The hard truth is though there are laws to protect us, just going to HR and making my disability common knowledge can hurt my career and how management sees me. With regard to the problems of determining
a) whether your child has homework
b) whether they have copied it down correctly
I suggest that the teachers download the information into a repository or directory on the school website. Relevant worksheets could also be placed here in a subdirectories for the relevant year and subject. Then parents could log in and download with a relevant password. It does need a little bit of work from the school but it can and has been done. If this is too complex an arrangement could be made with the childs teacher to email the homework.

I am a writer and a dyslexic adult who never gave up my dream of becoming a fiction writer. I have written two books now, and my third is how to publish books in 13 steps. It was not easy for me, but I did it! After years of my family's denial, and yes, they still deny this, I have failed at so many things but reading was the one thing I wanted to conquer. I had stories in my head like Mozart had music in his, therefore I wrote the stories in my mind's eye until I could write them down and finally publish them. Well I did it and I tell others my story at book fairs. This encourages others to write as well and with no apprehensions. I like lecturing in Detroit to others about writing and reading. As a teacher, I patiently recognize students who may have to be tested for dyslexia, but unfortunately their parents are not informed as early as they should. One parent was glad that I helped her acknowledge her son's dyslexia, and his teacher didn't tell her at all, she blew it off saying since he is in kindergarden, SAYING he will change. 'Back in the day' I had good teachers who were there to encourage me to TRY AND TRY AGAIN, I am so excited to tell others not to GIVE UP!

Hello there, I am wife of Gordon who has dyslexia and cant spell...we have 2 children with one on the way. The past 3 years have been very rough for us. There are bound to be similar stories but to keep things short:
Gordon is a Commercial tomato grower, we have been together for 6 years with our oldest child 4 yrs.
Gordon has had a couple of crop losses due to wrongly supplied fertiliser. We ended up taking the company responsible to court. We got into financial difficulty.
We had servere foodpoisoning the whole family including my parents...gordon had a stroke in the middle of having the food poisoning. The doctors reckon it was severe dehydration that caused it. Gordon because of his dyslexia was used to doing very physical work. Now that he has had the stroke it has affected his whole right side, short term memory, tiredness, plus blindness in his right eye. We now have to look at our options because we have a family to bring up. We have considered leasing his glasshouses out. They need a little bit of repair work done to them first. Gordon is wanting to have a change from growing but what does he do or can he do for a job or business. He is wanting to still work for himself. Because he is disheartened, is negative & puts barriers up when you suggest ideas and has feeling of who would employ him. He has his good and bad days with his syptoms. I was a horticulturalist before kids, I am a stay at home mother who is considering going back to study to get into a better career. I don't know how I can do that because I have no funds to do so. Please any advice needed. We need to sort our lives out for the sake of our children. thankyou

Please send information as to whether there is anyone who helps people with dyslexia to get a job. He worked for the same store for 18 years. There is no market for Commercial Photographers in the New Orleans area due to the economy and he doesn't do well with the wedding and portrait unless I am there to write everything down. Does the American's with Disabilities Act help with any of this? Can anyone direct me to some type of resources that might help us get him back on his feet? We are literally at our wits end in finding a solution to this situation. Who is stupid?

A few years ago on my close friends died unfortunately. I know a lot of people he used to take the Mickey out of him because he could not read and write properly. This did not making stupid. Where the people are paid him to fix their car who could read and write stupid? After all they could rear right so why was they pay in a man who could not really write properly. So who is stupid now the man who can read and write other man that cannot.

We all good at something so never think that you are stupid or thick could you are not. Always be positive about yourself no where else will be for you. Yes I am dyslexic I am 54 and was diagnosed when I was 51 so I know what you all mean by people thinking you are stupid. In my eyes know one is better than I am they may have more money than I do they may be brighter at some things that I am but they all have to go to the toilet us in the same way that makes them no better than me and I am no better than them we all the same.

How are you all

I was diagnoised with Dyslexia 2 years ago at the age of 37. I could always read, just slowly and never aloud, my main problem is numbers (I'm stil brutal with them). Any how I was initally relieved as it ment I there was actually a reason for me being the way I was as opposed to me just being stupid. However as time has gone on I feel it has again become a issue for me, I have no short term memory, and when I take notes, I'm unable to read them back or remember what they are for. My desk space in work is a mess and things I used to feel comfortable doing I now feel convinced I going to mess up. I also feel as if work look on me as a bit special now that I have dyslexia. I feel rightly or wrongly that it has become an issue with promotion, and at the end of the day I'm very embarrassed by the whole thing. I just want to be able to work like everyone else, not be constantly worried about messing up and not feel embarrassed every day. I come in in the morming and immediately look at my work for the what I won't mess up point of wiew.

I just venting here really as if I stood up in the office and did this I'd be committed. Anyhow

Cheers

Dyslexia has been debilitating for me. It has given me low self-esteem anxiety and fear. As an adult with dyslexia I feel there's so many things in life that I can't accomplish that I would love too. I'm stuck in a low-paying dead end job doing physical labor wearing my body down before it's time because that's my only option. My school years were nightmare as hard as I tried I could never do well. Being held back year after year, labeled with a learning disability made it easy for kids to tease me and call me stupid. After being labeled stupid so many times you start to believe it. In those days no one had ever heard of dyslexia. I eventually stop trying stop caring I thought I could get by, on my looks and became very rebellious. I became very clever at covering up my little secret the secret that no matter how hard I tried I just couldn't grasp basic reading and writing. I can somewhat read but many words are very hard so I just skip over them. My writing is not legible I think God for spelling software like Dragon NaturallySpeaking. I remember when I first heard about dyslexia I had heard something about people turning numbers around and at that very moment I knew that that was me there had finally been a name put to this horrible monster that I had been living with. I found some comfort in knowing that there are other people out there going through the same situations. But I still struggle with this I guess I always will it is the very thing that makes me withdraw from society and holds me back from truly living a free life. I'm at a point in my life now where I just need to get this off my chest the anger and the frustration of not being able to be normal. At this point all that I desire is to be able to function on a normal level.

Sincerely, Lisa

I've recently started the course to help my son (age 14)who has been assessed with dyslexia at the age of 11. It happened so late because we moved to UK from Poland when he was 7, and at school teachers were thinking he couldn't cope because he was a foreigner. Before that time, he had been going through the really bad time as being extremely intelligent he could not achieve good grades and had difficulties with literacy, numeracy, organizing and emotions. Not knowing the problem, teachers labelled him ‘lazy’, ‘dumb’, ‘not trying enough’, ‘trouble maker’ etc. Family and friends could not understand the problem, as well. I remember crying often and thinking ‘what is going on’?, ‘why my son cannot manage in life’?, ‘why easy things are becoming extremely difficult for him’? It's much easier now, when we know the 'problem' much better. I am glad but sometimes think, that's pity we didn't know earlier... It could save us so many unpleasant moments...

Hi. I am a 31-year-old analysis at the NYC administration of children’s services. I have dealt with my dyslexia my whole life and some how have been able to be successful. But its getting to the point that I’ll need to start to give my dyslexia more attention if am expected it move up career wise.

I have a lot of trouble with spelling, retaining and processing information when I read, math and multitasking.

Dose anyone know of any therapists or groups the specialize in the treatment of dyslexic adults that are located in NYC?
I thank you in advance for any help.

Subject: Assessing a 6 year old Kindergartener for Dyslexia

My daughter is 6 years old and just started kindergarten this year. Her teachers are concerned that she may be dyslexic because she cannot recognize her letters nearly as well as her classmates. Evidently, it is controversial in our public schools whether you can actually tell if a kinder student is dyslexic so testing within the school district is discouraged but her teacher is concerned that if we allow it to go, she will suffer from low self confidence. So I've been researching assessment options that we can pursue privately. My question is, can you fully assess a 6 year old who is not reading yet? The district says if she can spell her name, she's not dyslexic!
