Okay everyone, I'm going to tell you a story about my sister’s, my brother’s and my first driver's license road tests.
My sister is five years older than I am, and we are talking about 1954.
The family car was a Prefect. If you have seen movies about World War II, you can visualize what a Prefect car looks like. It had horse-hair seats, which I can tell you were very itchy, and the gear shift was a metal rod attached to the floor and into the transmission.
We were living in Hawaii at the time, and my sister was very excited about getting her first driver's license. At the Honolulu police station, she met the policeman who would give her the road test. Now in Hawaii, Hawaiian policeman can come in very large sizes. My sister gets in the Prefect, and Hawaiian policeman gets in the other seat. She drives through Honolulu traffic and starts up "test hill." Now the hard part about the test; she was supposed to stop in the middle of this hill, shift into first, step on the gas, and proceed up the hill without the car rolling backwards.
My sister starts up the hill, stops in the middle of the hill, shifts into first, steps on the gas, and the car does not move. She tries again shifting into first, steps on the gas, and the car does not move. She looks at the policeman; he looks at her, and gets out of the car. My sister then drives up to the top of a hill, turns around, and drives down the hill and picks up the policeman. Needless to say, she passed the test.
Now we all talk about dyslexia and how hard it is to do some of the things in life. I'll talk about my brother’s driving test.
My brother has an IQ of about 142. He has a doctorate in physics. He flunked the road test three times. When he turned from a one-way street onto another one-way street, he always changed lanes in the middle of the intersection. The last time I visited him, I mentioned his first driver's license road test. He told me he did not want to talk about. lol
When I was 15, I took the written test for a driving permit. I drove for four years with just the permit. When I was 19, I went to Honolulu police station to get my first driver's license. I took the written test for the driving permit again and signed up for my road test. I was called to take the test and the policeman asked me how long I had been driving, I told him four years. My road test was driving around the block. That's all, just driving around the block.
I do not advise any one to do this, but boy was it fun!
