Subject: My Boyfriend Can't Accept His Dyslexia-- Help!

Hi everyone,

A few months ago I found out that my boyfriend of 2 and 1/2 years, and whom I am deeply in love with, is dyslexic. I never would have known if his sister hadn't told me- it must not be a severe form.

Then a couple weeks ago I told him I knew and, of course, it didn't matter to me. He became so distraught that he wouldn't talk to me for a week- he said every time I look at him now, he feels ashamed and "not good enough". He explained that he's been building a persona for years to try and hide this part of himself, and now it's all been shattered.

Recently, he started talking to me again and explained that I have no idea what he's had to deal with in his life. I've tried everything I can think of to explain that it doesn't matter to me, that there's absolutely no reason to be ashamed, but he doesn't even want to discuss it.

He's been depressed ever since he found out I knew and he claims he won't ever speak to his sister again for telling me. He's still in love with me, but he thinks this has ruined our relationship.

I really feel it would be healthy for him to embrace this part of himself, but I can tell he has been deeply suppressing his dyslexia for many years and has no desire to deal with it.

I don't know when he was diagnosed, and after looking at the symptoms online, I'm sure that he must have a mild form of it. Maybe he should be re-tested?

How do you get support for someone who is completely resistant to the subject? Is it even my place to try?

Has anyone had to deal with something like this? Any advice would be incredibly appreciated.

Gracias

Last week, I had planned to attend a support group for dyslexics but at the last minute I changed my mind. I said to myself, why am I going to a place where dyslexics will be? I don't want anyone to see me there.

When I was in school, I never wanted to be in a room with people who had reading problems. I found it so humiliating. If any of my friends had seen me in such a place, I would have died!!!

Well forty years later, I guess i still have that fear.

I recently found out that someone in my family was diagnosed with dyslexia as a child and I am very upset and disgusted that our school system didnt do more to help him out but just put him in a special needs classroom with other children and was basically pushed aside. Now he is grown up and is going for his GED and is at a 3rd grade reading level and because of this believes that he is just stupid so he really never applied himself before and now his self confidence is very low. I'm trying to find ways to help him to the best of my ability so if anyone has any suggestions please let me know..It just makes me sick that our school system is letting these kids slip through the cracks and not willing to do a little extra work to help them so then they grow up with low self esteem and some end up H.S. drop outs that can barely do some of the simple tasks of life that some of us take for granted..reading, simple math(balancing a checkbook, paying bills)

Good afternoon this is this is Edward adult male 49 years old have been fighting dyslexic all my life graduated high school due to tying the best I could never did take home a book what good would that do paid close attention in class I had a lot a special Ed classes and I graduated from high school 1979 have been a farmer most of my life had to hire a bookkeeper for bills accounting paying bills and so on and so on gave up farming five years ago cash rented the farm out. Went to work in the real world it's pretty mean out there right out the farm we was a satellite dish installer after two years of that went to fiber optic installer as the present time I am currently unemployed looking for work

Through my past history
My childhood was all good as far as with my parents it was really weird because my dad his hobby was reading he went to college for five years got his master's he could do. Ted biology AG he could do calculations faster than a person with a calculator I did not pick up that trade of course I used to be very ashamed of being an the way I am in school they used to be very mean retard name Colleen a lot and I was exceptional I did not get that punishment very much some of the others in my situation went through hell because I have learned even today who ever is picking on you do not show a response to this tough and then they lose entertainment and it that got me through high school pretty good about a freshman year I have picked up the use of alcohol gave me popularity of monks the high school kids my graduating class was about the size of 200 three that time popularity was not a problem because of alcohol having parties through the years we have had three du eyes losing a driver's license 15 days in jail and my bad pass the way and then I had to grow up because I was going to lose everything including the family farm so I joined alcoholics anonymous. For that I Los the shame of being dyslexic don't know why I guess we cannot change the pass im 13 years sober at this time doing great. The computer has opened a new world for me because of dragon dictation program and Clairol read reading program because me the flight instructor powered parachute I have a lot of things to be grateful for today even today I'm too honest whiff job interviews because I'd tell them I'm dyslexic I think that bites me in the butt still looking for work the neat thing the computer programs that I have allows me to look for work. Still married doing great she is very understanding I know sometimes it's Gotta be rough former especially when I not working because sometimes I do not fill like a I'm pulling my own weight they do not know who this will help or who I am writing this two in the past I have looked for dyslexic groups that I could relate to exchange ideas on surviving have not found any in Quincy ill I will keep I'm searching. It seemed like searching for work searching for dyslexic groups at this time my skills are mechanical computer anything I see done I can do other than reading writing spelling is even some adults will say you are illiterate again do not show response . The person same at is normally not very bright themselves consider the source because I can do almost anything other than reading writing spelling I know that is a lot in this world but that's out of my control nothing I can do about it other than do the best that I can and the things that I can do because I'm very good at a lot of other things that others can not do one example once I see it done I can do it if I'm looking at a picture or a map no problem I see more than the normal person troubleshooting is a challenge but I enjoy it far as mechanical and electronic things if you are dyslexic you have a lot of other strengths think about it it might be artwork listening to people directing managing it goes on and on the main thing you cannot change the past cannot predict the future and please be proud of what you have accomplished because sometimes it is a lot for us . So with that what else can I add is the question at this moment I don't know who this will help sitting here thinking about what else can I say. I realize what I have said jumps around all over unshared needs improvement nobody edited this so if you're dyslexic you'll understand the whole thing laughing laughing remember there is a different stages of dyslexic some of them are just in numbers some people cannot read maps some people can not do computers a few examples the list goes on.
To have been thinking about going back to school something it sounds crazy but then if I do online classes I have the computer programs to help me but then I get scared thinking about it so it has not happened yet because I think that the Of the school year there will be a finals that I will have to take somewhere else then I get scared so what's a person do questions

I am a 40 year old mom of an 8 year old boy. He is in 3rd grade and is a vibrant, high energy kid. When he was 2 years old, he was diagnosed with a brain tumor. He has, by the grace of God, survived and recovered. The doctors did however, tell us that there may be a chance he has a learning disability. I have a growing concern that he may be dyslexic as he struggles with reading and still mixes up his letters and numbers. Math is difficult for him also. He tells me that the words/letters jump around on the page. He is easily distracted, but is able to concentrate and focus for extended periods. I was told by his teacher that there are steps that the school system requires one to take and exhaust those options before testing for dyslexia is done. This is because the testing is expensive. Is this true? If anyone has any insite or advice on how to navigate through the process of testing I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks!

Hello all,

im 34 years old and currently studying an open university course in an attempt to make up for the time wasted at school and college.
it was only when talking with my girlfriend about how hard i find it to learn in an academic way that she suggested it could be a form of dyslexia.

im a very bright (self)educated person. i don't have issues reading or with numbers. its more a case of how i process it.

like lots of people i learn hands on, i have learnt to strip and re build motorbike engines, build repair configure computers, the list goes on...

but give me something on the academic front, a pile of books, a list of tests and exams and my brain just cant deal with it..

its like having a box full of jigsaw pieces and each piece is from a different puzzle. although i can work out what is on each piece i cant join them up to get the full picture.

after thinking about my current situation its made me realise i was the same at school.
i just put the way i was at school down to not really giving two hoots about school.
i was in all the top sets and there were high expectations for me. but i went off the rails...

I'm 34yr old and am in my second semester of college, going for funeral services, and am thinking about seeing someone to see if I might have dyslexia. I've never really had problems with letters or numbers but when it comes to understanding things I'm reading i do have problems. I can sometimes read something 3 or 4 times over and still not "get it". I'll listen in class and understand what the instructure is saying and be like "I get it" then when I get home and read the same thing I don't and have trouble remembering what was said in class. The other day we had a quiz on something I know and if the instructure had said just write it out I would've done great, but it was fill in the blank and when I looked at the paper it was like I had no clue what I was suppose to put. After getting really fustrated I just put stuff in the blanks I taught it would be, I didn't pass. I've always had problems like that. I also have trouble getting my thoughts to come out right. It's like they sound great in my head then when I write them or say them it makes no sense. I started looking up dyslexia and from what i've read it might have something to do with my problems. Does anyone on here know if it could be and if I should see about getting tested? I just want to find out what I can do to do better in school and maybe not feel stupid sometimes.

Good day to everyone, thanks to all that make this forum possible, my question is, can dyslexia be cause by a trauma to the head? when I was 10 years old I hit my head on the left side just above the ear and after that and untill now I had problem with reading, so they say because I have no memory before the accident.
Your answer is of interest for me. look forward reading you soon.

Hi there everyone.

My name is Michael Ciccone and I am a filmmaker from Australia who has recently been putting the finishing touches on a documentary about dyslexia.

A Life Less Ordinary is a touching film that brings the incredible firsthand accounts from several families as they strive to cope with their child's learning difficulty. Often trapped in a world of isolation and unknown, this documentary provides reassurance to parents and children at a time when they need it most.

Still a few weeks away from actual completion I am releasing a few short teasers to the web to hopefully generate discussion and maybe receive a little feedback from people such as your self.

The videos can be watched here:

I know now, through the making of this film, what a trying time this can be for any child, or any parent. Though hopefully this documentary helps you understand that you are not the only person who must travel this path, and there are some great resources for assistance out there!

All the best.

Quick background on me first, I am 42 and dyslexic and have unfortunately passed it on to my daughter.(she likes to remind me of this)

I can talk about my daughters dyslexia with other people without any problem but when it comes to talking about me I cant do it, even with my own family. Even just typing this on here is making me feel uncomfortable.

Is there anyone out there that has some advise on how to start a converstation on something like dyslexia. I would like to be able to tell everyone at work and make them understand more about it. it would help alot with them understanding why I have problems with some things (paperwork yuck)

I think there are couple of things making it harder for me, there is one persion at work that would have a hard time understanding something like this and would just think of me as stupid, also I suffer from a social anxiety disorder which makes talking to people that much harder.

It is sad to see that there is so little support for Adults with Dyslexia it was great finding this site.

I am currently working for a manager who describes himself as a 'former dyslexic'. All the staff being non dyslexic, this is what we experience every day: (1) very abstract objectives, inaccessible metaphors; (2) changing priorities, appointments are constantly canceled; (3) high expectations that we can't answer, he expresses constant disappointment; (4) detailed review and control of all the work we produce and systematic changes we do not understand; (5) the necessity to insert weird images/icons in every deliverable, including excel spreadsheets; (6) regular personal attacks about fidelity and trust; (7) extreme anxiety with hierarchy, visitors, peers.

Staff motivation is really low these days. Has anyone any advice to help us improve the situation? Thanks in advance.

I have since birth been autistic with a learning disability. I have problems with numbers, losing words on the page when reading, memory, math, typing, reading things incorrectly even when reading slowly, forgetting names, and sometimes not being able to visually percieve things that are right in front of me. All of this is with or without my glasses (which I couldn't afford until 25), though the glasses clarify things alot. Despite all of this I love to read although I'm rather slow at it. Now when I was about 7 I had a head injury and that's when everything went down hill. A speech therapist and I have traced numerous nuerological problems back to that exact day. Does anyone know of connections between dyslexia and autism, or dyslexia and other neurological problems? I really have to know how to visually deal with this and frankly I need a cure now. Thanks.

My son has worked for the same employer for over 5 years, starting before his 16th birthday. He was tested at age 9 & 12 (WORD) and the results were that he had a specific learning difficulty in literacy. A comparison of the tests showed a regression in his results at age 12. I have a copy of both results. Due to his difficulties he received little or practically no secondery education. His employer has never asked for any proof and have made allowances in the past to help him. Recently he has been experiencing difficulties at work and has raised a grievance. His employer has insisted that he raise everything in writing and even if they ask him to tell them available dates for hearing etc. they then changed it to he had to provide it in writing. He has had two hearings and they now have requested that he be assessed in order that they have proof that he has a difficulty. Are they allowed to do this and can my son not just give them his previous results.

Hi,
Im looking for a hand here, I am a supervisor within an engineering company. I am not dyslexic but I work with people who are. We work with numbers and sizes all the time and to very accurate tolerances. This can create some difficult situations for people, for example heres two numbers 3113 and 3131 even for me a mistake could be made here and either one or both end up wrong never mind if I was dyslexic.
Basically I would like to know what I can do to help, can I present things differently or change colour formats on drawings from the regular black and white?
Any advice or help is welcome, I can only apologise for my ignorance regarding this but would like to fix that.

Greetings,
I am 42 and over the last couple years have self diagnose myself with Dyslexia. I took a couple online test and they confirmed my prognosis. I actually find it reliving since I have been an accomplished professional for most of my life. But, the dyslexia has definitely held back mostly around grammar…spelling and writing to be specific. I have trained myself to be a decent critical writer but I definitely have a limited vocabulary (thank God for spell check). Also, I have always struggled with test taking and this fear has held me back from taking higher learning courses over the years. I was wondering if anyone knows a good path to train myself on how to overcome Dyslexia. I don’t want to go down the path of doctors; I was thinking more of a personal or online tutorial. Please let me know if you have any ideas

I am a Teacher who works with disadvantaged young people. Some of my students have been diagnosed with dyslexia or have dyslexic tendencies. I am currently undertaking a research project about dyslexia and how the use of multi sensory teaching methods is used to support dyslexic students in the classroom.

I was wondering if anyone had any experience of multi sensory teaching methods and whether they would be able to offer any information or feedback.

Thank you

My son fair, very handsome 6 feet tall, no disability except he is slow learner. I have saved for him for his life to live comfortably, have built a small house for him. He now needs a understanding partner. Caste creed religion no problem. Any Dyslexic female looking for a good partner can respond to my e-mail.
I feel even dyslexics have the right to live their own happy life. With so many world forum talking so much across the globe, I thought this is the best place to put my request.

I am 27 years old and I was disgnosed dyslexia 3 years ago. I have always had some reading/writing problems. Nevertheless, my dyslexia did not kept me from improving in studies and actualy having realy good marks at courses I was good at. I am now starting the Davis method (my firs 'interventions' in order to improve my dyslexia problems). I would like to know some opinions about this methods (concerning adult dyslexics). I would also be gratfull to know of any other recomendation or method which showed to be somehow efficient for adult dyslexic people.
Thank you very much.

What does brain surgery have to do with teaching?

Unfortunately, almost nothing.

Dr. David Clarke of Dalhousie U performed the first simulated brain surgery in preparation for the real thing. In order to create his model, Dr. Clarke used MRIs to map Ellen Wright's brain. He did not use a generalized, two-dimensional model the way educators do. To work on Ellen's brain, he mapped Ellen's brain. On August 23rd, 2009, Canada.com quoted Dr. Clarke:

"...and all of that is specific to the patient you're about to operate on," Clarke said Thursday, of the procedure, which is the first of its kind in the world."

Specific to the patient.

Teachers need not be nearly as careful. We still train our teachers, and devise "new, state-of-the-art" programs based on a generalized two-dimensional model of... whose brain?

We cannot perform MRI's on the brain of each child in our classes, but Dr. Clarke's statement forces us to consider again the complexity of human variability. Educators must stop thinking along that out-dated "bright" and "stupid" continuum, and start to respect the endless possibilities for differences in perception and ability levels for specific tasks. Perhaps we should begin to think of that Bell Curve as being three dimensional: a bell with an infinite number of skills to measure.

One painful example of the failure of using a generalized brain model is our present system of barring children from learning to read until/unless they can link three sounds in succession to form little words. We already know that at least ten percent of our population is dyslexic and that dyslexics often have difficulty with "phonemic awareness". What percentage of our school population are we excluding by continuing to adhere to only one - of many - approaches to teaching reading?

There are psychologists who agonize over labeling a child as sub-standard in any way. Yet we allow (even expect) teachers in the early grades to glibly sort their little humans into three groups of "bright-okay-dumb" kids. Dr Diana Hicks of the International Baccalaureate Organization reports thatwe have research that indicates these early grouping labels set the stage for the remainder of a child's academic career.

Oh, the power of the early elementary teacher!

I have finally found what I've been seeking for years!
You, all of you. I'm lousy at bookkeeping. So you won't find me in the bookstores perusing books about bookkeeping. It's not my talent and I abhor it.

Now my daughter, who is 25 and has dyslexia, doesn't have a book in her house, except two now that I gave them to her. She does not peruse libraries or book stores because she abhors reading, like most dyslexics. She only reads what she needs to to survive. Which is why I am making a post.

The two books she now has that she loves and reads everyday (I know because she calls me from Texas and lets me know) is, "The Gift of Dyslexia" by Ron Davis and the book I spent 12 years writing just for her and those like her, "Gabbys Wordspeller Phonetic Dictionary". No one wanted to publish this book for me because it was dry, unsensational and wouldn't reap millions in a years time. So be it. I published it myself. Now it's in 400 school districts and public libraries. But guess what? It's not selling in books stores. You know why?

Do people who are gifted with dyslexia go peruse through book stores and libraries for the thrill of it? NO. That's why a publisher didn't want us. But it's for you guys.

As well, my daughter spoke that she 'finally found her kind' when she attended a workshop in Dallas that I found online sitting here in Washington at dyslexia.com. I met these people, visited the workshops, read the books, met children and adults who say absolutely that this program changed their lives. The children have twinkles in their eyes after their first session when they discover that there are 'trigger' words or letters or (for some the inability to do multiple choice tests) sentence structures that create a sense of 'disorientation' for them.

This program (for all ages) as well as the book, illustrates how and when this disorientation occurs and how to catch it and reel yourself back in. So a person can get a sense as to when they are slipping into a 3-D perspective, apply a method they learn, then quickly snap back into a 2-D linear process. A 2-D mind is required to read and write text. Dyslexics are 3-D thinkers...that's the trick!

This dyslexia.com is designed, managed and facilitated by people who either had dyslexia and learned to correct it or are people who have dyslexic children who learned to correct it through this association.

They're home grown by dyslexics, for dyslexics, just the way it should be! They love my book and I love their program!

Am dyslexic and learnt to side step it most of my life. Have always run my own businesses and will give anything a go. Just finished building a house so no task is to big. My children are off my hands and am now looking a giving life a new purpose.
Have undertaken a course in New Zealand on tutoring dyslexia and returned to Australia, Queensland to start tutoring. Have become horrified at the lack of support, help and understanding here. Will keep plugging on for each child I help is all worth it. My web site is www.helpfordyslexia.info if there is any pointers or more information you think I should add please let me know. The next step is learning to do public speaking. Am aproching schools at the moment, have advertised in the local, letter drops, books in waiting rooms and notices on boards at the local supermarkets. Need to push "difficulty with the written word" for dyslexia seens to be a dirty word. How sad.

hi everyone,

It's very moving to read other peoples experiences, and I was wondering if someone might have some advice for me.

I am 27, I have my masters from NYU, and am looking for work in an international field (i.e. gov't or NGO).

That said, I was diagnosed in 1st grade (my father is also dyslexic). While I am a high functioning dyslexic, I am terrified of applying to jobs that require high levels of organization, and perfect language skills (my mother proof read everything I wrote in school). I am not a details oriented person who multi-task, which is what I feel most of these jobs are looking for at the entry level. I recently had a very bad experience with a job on account of my dyslexia, and I don't want to repeat my mistakes (by paying close attention, I'll catch my mistakes before they happen). I have a breath of knowlage and creative ideas, that I attribute to my dyslexia, but without these basic skills, I don't know how to market myself. I also can speak several languages (that I learn by sheer force of will), but of course, my written isn't so great.

When competing with a large pool of applicants who are as qualified as I am, and don't have this hinderence, how do I find entry level jobs that don't demand these basic skills?

Any thoughts, reactions, suggestions would be much appreciated.

Thank you.

Tara

Hi all,
When I was young I displayed all the hallmarks of dyslexia, but by the time I was 8 I had stopped writing letters back to front and my reading was quite good. I was intelligent and creative and so nothing more was said about it. I was told that I had grown out of it and beleived this to be so. For most of my life I have felt that I was very different to everyone else, but didn't know why. Last year, at 42, I was diagnosed with the chronic autoimmune disease, scleroderma. This happened just as we (my husband and 2 kids) decided to sell our house and move. So, besides organising the moving process I had to deal with the disease as well. At one point I suffered an anaphylactic reaction to one of the drugs I was taking. My husband was working long hours and so I was dealing with EVERYTHING virtually on my own. As a result I ended up having a breakdown and began treatment for depression by the end of the year. Then, earlier this year my daughter was diagnosed with ADD. I started reading about the condition and the more I read the more I realised that I never "grew out" of the dyslexia; my brain just made the necesssary adjustments in order to allow me to read and write. The personality traits that go along with dyslexia are still there and this is what I am having trouble dealing with. In the past I've never really needed friends, but now I find that I do. Unfortunately my social skills are very poor. My disease is under control and I'm on the road to recovery as far as the depression goes, but I need to deal with the emotional side of dyslexia. A little while back I hurt a very good friend, who now won't talk to me. The reason why I hurt the friend was because of the faulty thinking patterns dyslexia causes. I want to tell this friend that I have dyslexia, but I'm afraid that they will think that I'm using it as an excuse for my behaviour and besides, I don't want sympathy, just understanding. If anyone has any thoughts I'd be grateful to hear them.

On the fourth of July the fireworks in Portland Oregon became a thousand tears. A social worker named Susan Dunfee at Legacy Emanuel Hospital stole a dyslexic man's little children, and said "You don't talk, you don't get them back." "You were speechless by stress so you don't get to comfort your newborn baby when you hear her cry." "You had memory problems so you don't really love your two year old boy." "Your coping broke down so you can't sing to your five year old poet." "You delayed to understand me so you cannot read a bedtime story to your eight year old son." "Your were reluctant to answer my questions so you cannot pray with Daddy's girl to keep her from staring blankly at the empty wall waiting for her best friend to hug her and tell her how beautiful she is." "And because your answers at Legacy Emanuel Hospital were slightly off the point and you stumbled over your words, you are incompetent to teach your twelve year old son." "Therefore, I Susan Dunfee shall take your beautiful kids that you cherished forever. I guess No talk = No children in Portland Oregon.

my experiences have been as usual and as unusual as this condition called dyslexia. Could not read aloud estecially when put on the spot....bad bad school system!!!
Can not tell how many like numbers (1111) are in a group with out acutally placing an item on them to count. driving and reading road signs quickly... no way! reading to myself is fine..to a point. However directions and understanding the written text is no proublem. I do not see what is actually there sometimes. I say...just how did i miss that?? I have had to learn "tricks" to function in jobs that i was not really suited for...like accounting. yes i have had to hold down two accounting positions. did great except for my speed..i can not type fast or look from page to screen and keep my place...I just get lost and have to regroup.

I have just submitted an passed my third assignment and i have been advised these tips may help children with dyslexia learn left and right (it works for my stepdaughter)

Lydia thinks of how she would open a jar lid and will remember - Lefty loosy, Righty tighty. When she thinks of the way she turns it to tighten it (tighty) she will think of right (righty)

When thinking quickly which is right or left she extends her index finger and her thumb as far as it will go away from each other and if you look at this then the Left hand makes an L (which stands for Left) with those two fingers. (Its hard to explain in writing)

Hope these help, i would welcome any tips for remembering times tables if anyone has any

Hi

I'm a 39 year old male from the UK.I'm not dyslexic and in fact i read books constantly and own hundreds.
I've always had really bad handwriting. So bad i hate writing anything.Even Birthday cards.I used to do joined up writing back in high school'but thats been over 20 years now and i can't even remember how do do it.I just write block capitals now.But the letters or numbers are never the exact same height and the lines are never straight.
I've worked in a call centre for the last 15 years because i like the verbal communication and keyboard skills.i think thats all i can do although i am above average IQ.So i think this problems held me back and i'm really self conscious of it.

I've never really considered it was a disability(If thats the right word) and just thought i just hadn't learned neat writing in school. But i googled bad handwriting this week and found out about dysgraphia. Its interesting that lack of fine motor skills can be an issue as i've never played any musical instrument than the triangle(Joke) and i can't really seperate my fingers well.I play guitar hero with my son and he can split his fingers on all the colours and i struggle with medium. Most people can do the Spock split fingers thing from Star Trek and i can't.I also can't write for maybe more than a page or so before my hands and writs ache.So i'm picking up possible signs hinting towards Dysgraphia.

So i have some questions.

1) How can i get this checked? Do i see a GP?
2) And if i do have it is there anything i can do to help?
3) And if a apply for jobs is this a disabilty to put down on the application form?

Thanx for all replies.

I Dont know if anyone else has heard about this, but I came across a new approch for improving memory and there doesnt seem to be a lot of talk or discussion about it.
It is a new therapy available for improving poor short term verbal memory. The therapy focuses on improving representation for the regions of the brain that process speech and represent verbalisation.

A book is also available online from Amazon and as a downloadable ebook from mobipocket. It is a study guide and therapy with exercises. The therapy is a new approach aimed at improving the representation for speech and verbal memory. I have tried it myself and I would say it is well worth looking into. It is a bit of an odd book written by a Phd computer science researcher at Lancaster University.

Today I go to my daughter's school to have a support team meeting. I am dyslexic and fear that the school people will out word me and I won't understand what is going on. I fear my daughter is dyslexic as well and this is the reason for the meeting. I have been telling her teachers to watch for dyslexia, but always told what she is doing is normal. Its not, I did the same thing. My twin is not dyslexic and had no problems. But this year her 4th grade teacher told us something is worng with how she learns and she can't slow down just for her. Every thing I am reading on signs of dyslexia is her and I to a T. I don't know what kind of help is out there for someone like me to help my daughter. Any advice? Denise

Hello, I have always known i was dyslectic. Diagnosed in 1st grade, i am going to be 36 thirty years latter! all i have ever wanted in my life is to be a entertainer, I got picked for various plays in school and never finished them because i would forget the words or change them around.
I sing karaoke quiet often and i don't think i am the best but i do know i have the ability to be great, now hears my question, i have been approached by many bands to sing with them and i am always so embarrassed because no matter how many times i have heard the song ill forget the words or the sequence of the words (never the melody) are there any tricks to help me remember?
I always save myself by using other words in place of actual words but it is really getting old, I have lived with this so long i know how to improvise but i wish i did not have to, thanks for your time......sweetpink

I am a search and rescued K-9 handler who is mentoring a new team. Both the dog and the handler show great promise but, unfortunately, the handler is dyslexic and has great difficulty with reading a topographical map and relating the map to the reality of the terrain in the search area.

I really believe in this team's ability to make a contribution to saving lives, but unless the handler can conquer the map issues the team will not be able to pass their certification test.

Does anyone have any ideas on how to help him to look at a map, understand his location with respect to the map, understand the topography, and develop a way to walk through the area on the map always knowing where he is?

I am not dyslexic myself and have no experience with this challenge.

Thanks in advance for your suggestions.

I just saw http://www.dyslexia-adults.com/index.htm
on VoyForums 'Dyslexia Adults Link' Discussion Forum. I thought I checked this out before, but there is a lot more on this site than I found before. There are links to dyslexia tests, etc.

Did you know about this site? Check out the story at http://www.dyslexia-adults.com/a39.html

Thanks, Ran. I needed the cue.

I'm only just getting to know the site still. You see, this is part of my complex of issues that results in a 'pseudo dyslexia', it seems.

A web support group through something like Skype might make this process a lot faster for all of us that may be comfortable with that medium.

Good luck with your investigations to all that are still finding their way like me,
John

Does anyone have some good tips, strategies or resources for improving reading speed and comprehension?

I have a master's degree and work in mid-level management at a major regional firm, but I'm dyslexic. I would estimate that people I work with read 2-3x my speed. This becoming a problem in group meetings, where everyone is expected to keep up with the group. Any thoughts?

Hi everyone, I have a question. I regularly have severe moments of reversing concepts... an example is I'll be driving and someone will ask which way I'm turning and I'll say "right" and then turn left (the direction I meant to say). Or they'll say "right" and I'll veer left automatically. I am in college and I've had trouble on exams when I mix up information esp mirroring opposites or directions like north/south or in/out. Is it some form of dyslexia, or is dyslexia only specific to mixing up letters and numbers? I am having trouble finding answers on the internet and I don't know if I should seek a diagnosis.

I think I need a direct support group, do you?

I am a 31 yo male who has been living with Dyslexia all my life, but did not get offically diagnosed until 2years ago. one year prior to my assesment my ability to reason emotionally and logically began to wane and as a result i ended up meeting a psychiatrist and was put on anti-depressants which did not work too well and i stopped taking them until recently. where they are begining to work a little better. I have completed my degree in psychology with a GPA of 3.4 which is not too bad. eventhough i got good grades i feel that i cannot remember any information that i learned in college and get increasingly frustrated. I cannot seem to get a system for studying that will help me remember the info for longterm use. I also have issues when i speak. I have trouble arraning my thoughts for speaking and find it incresingly more difficult to listen to instruction and follow directions correctly. i fell that tha aforementiond issues are playing a part to my depression because i constatly question myself my abilities and my capacity to function on a daily basis. I am seeing a therapist at the moment which helps. i just feel deflated at the moment because the job that i have at the moment as a counselor has a lot of paperwork and places a demand on my reading writing and listening and comprehending on a daily basis. i keep telling myself that i need to go and get an MRI because i need to see what is going on with my brain because i feel like i'm going crazy. Sorry for the rambling and disorganizing post. Any thoughts out there?

Hi everyone.

Firts I want to start by saying sorry for the spelling. The
question I have is how do you know that you have dyslexia,
and if there are certain types. The reason I ask this is because when I read most of the time i do ok, but there are time when I would mix up the words or totally miss them. A example of this would be, the car is red. But the would read the red car or just the car. Now I don't know if that's a case of dyslexia or I'm just stupid. The second part of this long question (sorry) is if it is dyslexia where can I go to get tested (doctor/therapist).
Any help at all would be great. Thank you

When reading with a child, the golden rule of telling the child the words they do not know straight away can make reading a hugely pleasureable and fun experience for the child and adult. Years ago reading with my young child who is dyslexic could result in tears and frustration as we struggled through a book, with me trying to make my daughter sound out all the words, which of course she could not do, thinking the more we could get through the better. However, now years later as a parent learning support assistant in a school my approach is very different. Firstly we chat about and look at the book, discuss what might happen, have a joke and then when the child does read I tell them the words they do not know straight away. As words are often repeated in the text they will read the word themselves further on. This approach means the child enjoys and understands the story, feels satisfaction when we finish the book and ultimately will want to read more!

I live in the USA and cannot pass the licensing exam (failed 3 times) I am so depressed over this and feel a failure. My collegues think I am above average in design and my work has won award for design. My dyslexia makes it impossible for me to ever pass the test, should I give up?
Should I hire an attorney and have them represent me as discrimination like ADA?
There are famous landscape architects and architects that have never passed an exam hence never got licensed but have international recognition, the exam process is near impossible for my condition yet not passing it makes me feel inadequate, I have worked with LA's that I could not hire due to there lake of ability yet they pass first time!

I have been looking for an adult support group for people with dyslexia. But as I have not been able to find one in Australia, I have decided to set up the group my self. I have no idea how to go about it or even if people other than me would be interested in such a thing. I understand that many of people feel a lot of sham in admitting that they are dyslexic and so might hesitate about joining such a group. If anyone has any pointers, information, reactions, suggestions, etc. Please I would be interested in hearing them.

I am 28 and found out a couple years ago I am most likely dyslexic. My primary issue is that I switch words in sentences/paragraphs. I always knew I read incredibly slow and would have to re-read things to get it right (sometimes many times).

What I was wondering is it seems like when I am tired I switch things even more often. I was wondering if anyone else had noticed this.

Also I don't know if this is related but when it's been a while since eating I have the hardest time comprehending what my husband is telling me (in addition to reading issues). But when tested for diabetes (w/ each of my 4 pregnancies) nothing pops up as being off in my blood sugar #'s. So I didn't know if anyone else noticed similarities.
Thanks!
