I am a 44 year old female. I have been told since Junior High that I am Dyslexic. I have been able to compensate for my type, form, whatever you wish to call it by Typing most everything. I can read and understand at a 4th year college level. I have taught myself to memorize most things I read after the 4th or 5th time. It has been very difficult. My mother taught me Phonics(<-- Unsure of this word) when I was 12 years old. She then taught me to speed read when I was 15 year old. Her teaching me all this had and has put a strain on our relationship. Her teaching method was NOT gentle. But it worked for me. I still have problems, But not with reading.
They are..
1) My hand eye co-ordination is terrible. I cant walk across a room without tripping on my own feet. Or pick up a coffee cup without dropping it or spilling it.
2) I cant write. I can not get the shapes of the letters from my head to my hand. And no I can not draw or paint.
3) I cant spell words with more then 10 to 12 letters. And sometimes simple words are very hard to spell correctly.
4) I am photophobic. Light hurts my eyes. It also gives me Migrains.
5) Hyper Auditory. I hear high pitched sounds. Neon lights have a high pitched hum, but to my ears its a dull deep hum that is very distracting. But I also have a problem sometimes, mostly when tired, at understanding when someone talks to me. Normal speech and tones are not understood. I have found myself reading their lips to understand some of what their saying and then guessing the rest. Phone conversations(Took 5 tries to get this spelled correctly) are a bit of a trial.
6) I have a lack in my sense of direction. North, south, east and west are just words. Left, right (hand with watch), forwards or backwards are what I and my family use with me. I get turned around in a Walmart. Been going to that store for 7 years and I still get mixed up.
7) I invert numbers and letters when typing, dialing a phone number or repeating a memorized number to someone. And I dont mean 6's turn into 9's. I mean 47 becomes 74. Like becomes Liek. I have had my phone number changed so the last 2 numbers are the same. They seem to be the only ones I invert on phone numbers.
8) I can add, subtract basic numbers. I can divide and multiply to a point. But not at the level you would expect from an adult with 3 years High school(Flunked out of 9th grade algebra after only 3 weeks).
All of these problems I have been managed to work around for the most part. Since I can read and understand 99% of what I read I have been told I am NOT Dyslexic. But they cant tell me what Is the problem.
So here it is... Am I or Am I not Dyslexic? If I am, is it a sub category? If not then what is wrong?
