Hi All,
I'm curious as to the ways we mask our disability.

I was never diagnosed during school and have learnt to live with the disability. I have little habits that I've developed to hide it. Like if I was asked to fill in a form, I lie and say I've forgotten my glasses and ask to take it home where I can take as long as I like and have it checked by family members then take it back the next day.

What other ways or habits do you have when it comes to being dyslexic.
Annabelle

I`m married to a person who can`t read or write. She has successfully hidden her problem by developing a really funny sense of humour. She still does all the regular hides like "forgetting her glasses"- asking for the waitress`s favourite selection on the menu, - not getting too close to educated people-saying she can`t spell too well, when she really can`t spell at all - . Our grown up kids are aware of the shortcomings but not really aware of how severe it affects her.- so she is pretty successful at hiding generally.

I always write in caps. Sometime's cursive too (to hide my spelling). My writing in caps comes from my constant struggle to keep lower case: b, p, q, d straight. It's near impossible to me and I'm often corrected by my coworkers which can be embarrising.

I have extreem anxiety reading alowed and was wondering if you knew any tricks to get out of it with the least amount of embarrasment. I hate gatherings were someone mentions playing Trivial Pursute. AGH!!! Any suggestions?

I hate going to a social gathering at a friends house on a Saturday evening because very often someone says, "let's play trivia pursuit." That someone usually is a friend who I had once confided in and told her that I am a dyslexic.Once I said, "okay, let's play" and guess what had happened. I could not read a few simple words.

So you just play and accept the fact that it isn't a big deal? You are very confident and brave.

I guess I would if I were close to the people playing. It's humorous that such a simple thing - a board game - could create so much anxiety in my life. Maybe I just need to get over it.
