Hello, I recently moved to NY from the UK, I'm 33 yrs old and desperately want to drive. I began driving lessons aged 17 and until now I've had so many, I even did a 1wk intensive course. I was able to drive confidently, but naturally a little nervous, the problem for my lays with not passing the theory test, in the UK I failed it 3times each time id fail by 1 point.
Now I've immigrated to the US I must drive, my husband is in the military and its vital for myself and the children I learn. But the very thought of picking up the book freaks me out, the past years of failure concerning driving has done zero for my confidence and all this because I'm dyslexic, can anyone offer some advice, id appreciate it. Thank you for reading.

Hi Joanne,

I don't know how valuable my advice will be to you, but being dyslexic myself and having the same issues with tests, I'll just throw this at you.
I live in Oregon and have been driving for43 years... seasoned, yes. Anyway, a couple of years ago I moved to Alaska and had to get my Ak license. I failed the test the first time, as I had to take it on the spot. I took the book home and studied it for a week and came back in and passed it... just passed it, but got my lic. all the same. Test anxiety runs deep in me. I really believe that if you take the time to really study the book and also, try the computer test first (pictures helped me) you will succeed. The only problem is that it gives you instant feedback and you know how many you can miss and that does put a little pressure on you, or it did me. If you'd rather take the paper exam that is an option. But if you fail, just go back and retake it. You'll be fine. Just remember which side of the road you are on in the US. haha... Anyway, good luck and I hope to see you're post after you pass it.
Bill

I wrote a dictionary for dyslexics, "American Wordspeller & Phonetic Dictionary" it's also an App on phones. The reason I mention this is because I just now talked with a wealthy realtor on the plane coming back home last month and he said he overcame his dyslexia by reading his books out loud while standing up and walking around. He said he also sometimes read and walked around while listening to music turned very loud. Now he can easily read. I'm certain it has to do with eye muscles and that ADD most dyslexics have (like my daughter).

Anyway, of all the remedies I've heard, that one sounded like the best.

i am dylexic and i qualified as a driving instrutor and did the job for 14 years. you should get extra help because you are dylexic. however some poeple are not willing to disclose the fact that thay are dyslexic and this makes it hard to help.

what i would say to you is you need to overcome dyslexa in your life and then the driving part will be no problem.

i went back to collage at the age of 53 and got help and and past a Diplomer.

you are probly like me very inteligent but have a disabilty it possible to overcome this find a organisation that will help you dont strugle all your life like i did only to find out how inteligent you are and what you could have atchived.

some of the things that realy helped me i learnd to touch type, strated to use dragon net voise to text techonlage, and was properly assesed.
