Subject: It is frustrating

I know I have a good case of Dyslexia but never really had an official diagnosis past when our daughter was tested some years ago I took it as well just for the heck of it they told me I was textbook. But I never got any sort of report or anything. Not sure what “textbook” is. But the last while I’ve been on the band wagon and doing some investigation on my own. I phoned the American Dyslexic Association (or something like that) and asked what can I do in my mid 50’s. Their response was “nothing, its too late and you probably have learned to live with it”. Wow...so I didn’t bother clicking on that “donate” tab on their site.

So does anyone know if you're older and want to gain some information on what's going on in the old noggin, is there any recourses available? I’m just curious on how a page of text can become a mess of unreadable garbage then all of a sudden turn into words. Or why My car radio knobs I cant just reach for...I have to think about which one is which for a second. Or why I try to read a book and I cant keep focused and I’m thinking of something else. Or To understand a long email I have to read it 10 times. Or....we I’m sure everyone knows the list. I know enough to understand the brain is a complex piece of equipment and much of what happens in there is not 100% known. I’d just like to have someone smart sit me down and say “this is your brain....this is your brain with dyslexia” . Cant believe the answerer is too old..too late.

I'm no expert but it sounds like you may have more than just dyslexia. Possibly ADD. If I were in your situation I would talk with my family doctor about it. I'm also dyslexic and Have found that putting a blank piece of paper over what I'm reading and moving it down the page, one sentence at a time as I am reading really helps me keep focused.

I understand im 60 now and just learned to keep it to myself, but i do find that i do have a short fuse i think my temper grew with my age its very frustrating living with this...it is to me. i just do the best i can and try not to be so hard on myself because this has been with me all my life, and will be with me for the rest of it...so i try to laugh things off and make the best of it...what else can you do?

You're never too old. I don't care for IDA because although their techniques work for some, they don't work for all and this organization is heralded by school districts way too much. An alternative (and I say this because I've witnessed dyslexics who try all sorts of methods) is DDAI (David Dyslexia Int'l Association).
