I turned 20 this year. I was wondering if there is a different way in determing if one is dyslexic. I know there is a test fourm on this site for about $800. Other sites are just as bad. I work at an minimun wage job and can not afford something like this.
What are my other options?
I am afraid to ask a doctor or even bring it up to my parents. I am afraid it is not dyslexia, and I am just a little stupid. I know my relatives notice they way I talk, I just loose my train of thought all the time. I am horrible at counting back change at work, even though I have worked there for over a year. I even have costumers mock me because they wanted it counted back the correct way. When a sutiuation like this arises my mind just freezes and I bet I could not even spell my own name for that instant. I have struggled through the years with this and more. Ever since I have found this disability I have noticed the same difficulties in my father. I struggle with it every day.
I want to know if dyslexia is issue for me, but can not afford that exensive test. I want this block I feel to stop. Where do I go from here?

You need a Slingerland test. You need someone to test you. Please go to Slingerland.org and go to their list of tutors. Contact one near you and explain your situation. You need a Malcomesius Test if available. Most tutors charge at least $300 a test, but perhaps you can save or pay over time. This test will definitively tell you if you have dyslexia. Good luck. Email me direct if you have further questions.

Are you still on your parents insurance? Many good insurance plans covers some/all the cost of the testing. Calling a local community college resource center for students will disabilities (or something like that) would be a great place to start, they will know names of people that can do testing.

I was able to be tested through the university. I saw a program on television about dyslexia and contacted Dr Linda Siegel at the University of British Columbia who works in the Department of Education. She was able to arrange for me to be tested by a graduate student and she sent me the results. The cost was only the expanse of traveling to Vancouver. Check out the Department of Education at the nearest university and see if they do something similar.

I have had two diagnoses and the first one our expand medical paid for part of it.

Locate a community college who can assure you they will be able to assist you through classes. That is where you will have access to testing and/or other help
