Hi,

I'm 32 and live in the UK. I went through school making up excuses for not having my work done and just blending into the background. It helped by not getting into trouble but it didn't help me progress or gett any good grades. Everyone told me I was silly, stuped, dum and so on. I went for my dyslexia test and found out that my dyslexia is around the sounds of words. I didn't even score on the spoonerisms test. At the end of the test I was told it could have been helped at a younger age.

So I cope by telling people. If they ask me how to spell words, I say "your asking the wrong person, I'm dyslexic!" and smile when I say it. I can spell bigger words but it's the small words and the words that sound alike (to, too, two etc) that are bad for me. I make good use of the spell checker in Word or the dictionary on my phone. I also have a mac and it has a feature where I can select the text and it read it out. I laugh about the spelling mistakes I make with my friends and some are funny. I ask my work mates to check my emails or reports before I send them. They help me a lot as I told them all during a meeting and I also gave them the opportunity to read the results from the test.

I tend to get into trouble at work, not too sure if it's because I'm dyslexic or because I'm from Yorkshire (we don't sugar cote bad news). But If I don't like a 'new change' because I can't 'see' it working right (my visual, analyzing, creative side work better) then I say so. I would rather do one thing right in a month then five not so good things.

So my advice is be proud of been dyslexic, for all bad things it brings, it also brings very very good things. Tell those around you so they can help you in the areas your weak. Use a dictionary and use Word, or other word processing program on your computer, to check your spellings and grammar. If someone laughs at you, it's their issue, just rise above it (easer said then done I know) and think of all the things you do way better then the average person.

Enjoy been dyslexic, I do!

All the best

I understand how you feel, I have been keeping this a secret from every employer whom I have every worked for. Sometime I would just like to say it out loud. I find this great spell & grammar checker software it called WhiteSmoke it has saved my life. Someday I go home from work very tried from trying to do my best. I get very streed out almost everyday. Will I have to write on the white board for this meeting or read out loud?
