Subject: Hearing children read

When reading with a child, the golden rule of telling the child the words they do not know straight away can make reading a hugely pleasureable and fun experience for the child and adult. Years ago reading with my young child who is dyslexic could result in tears and frustration as we struggled through a book, with me trying to make my daughter sound out all the words, which of course she could not do, thinking the more we could get through the better. However, now years later as a parent learning support assistant in a school my approach is very different. Firstly we chat about and look at the book, discuss what might happen, have a joke and then when the child does read I tell them the words they do not know straight away. As words are often repeated in the text they will read the word themselves further on. This approach means the child enjoys and understands the story, feels satisfaction when we finish the book and ultimately will want to read more!
