Hello,
I am 27 years old and I was disgnosed dyslexia 3 years ago. I have always had some reading/writing problems. Nevertheless, my dyslexia did not kept me from improving in studies and actualy having realy good marks at courses I was good at. I am now starting the Davis method (my firs 'interventions' in order to improve my dyslexia problems). I would like to know some opinions about this methods (concerning adult dyslexics). I would also be gratfull to know of any other recomendation or method which showed to be somehow efficient for adult dyslexic people.
Thank you very much.

I am 25 years old and in danger of getting "let go" or laid off because I have trouble with data entry. It is clean this isn't where I want to be anyway so I am looking for another job but would like to be confident in these unnecessary skills.

I type fast enough and am efficient. I keep a list of words that I have a tendency to spell incorrectly so that I can go over them later. This has been a continual struggle throughout my life but I have never been diagnosed. I had a special reading teacher in 1st grade but in high school all the help went away.

Can anyone tell me where I should go to get diagnosed and what tools are out there that I can use to help fix my problem or at least help me to cope with it better.

Thank you,
Melissa

Hi there Magy. I have not tried formal interventions myself, however I have found very effective stratigies to overcome my dyslexia. For me, the first step was aknowladging the condition and finding out as much as possible. (I was diagnosed as a child which made it a bit easier.) Then I started to note all the tasks that were affected (directions, telling the time, short term memory, spelling, copying out forms.etc.ect.) From there, over the years i have constructed my life around making these tasks do-able. I have assistive tec on my Laptop. I have a satilite navigator, all my medical information printed on paper for trips to the emergency room etc.

You can't "cure" dyslexia, any more then you can "cure" being female, or being short. You simply have to identify the mechanisms that will alow to to function optomally regardless

With lots of hope

Hello Maggy and Nicola

I agree with Nicola for alternative ways to deal with having dislexia

I have dislexia and have found learning a struggle at childhood and adult stage. I was diagnosed with dislexia at eh age of 19 and due to this was treated as lacking in concentration at school, eassily distracted and sometimes not interested even though I took it seriously and tried my best at all times!

It is very frustrating when you are told you are not interested in something becuase you are struggling and all it needs is for someone to inform you in a different way. I was first diagnosed at 19 when I could not pass my driving theory test second time round. I really wanted to drive so I had a private test costing £150 and was diagnosed with an apauling short term memory, struggling to read and understand and a low concentration span including a struggle to read black and white content and language difficulties to prounonce the right words when communicating.

This however, did not stop me going on to graduate with a beauty therapy and management degree.I had to take extra time in exams and have a nopte taker in lectrurs and a support teacher to help me understand what was expected of me. I graduated with a 2.1 which i am very pleased about!

However, this did not prep me for what was to come (THE WORK ENVIRONMENT. It is expected that you can read, write etc.. like everyone else and this becomes a massive battle for me. I have been dicriminated by an old manager who implied i was stupid and could not do the role. This lead me to feel thick and usless and question how can i be when i have got a busoness management degree 2.1? From this I have worked out some tactics which may help you too:

1)Write/set reminders
2)Ask regular questions to understand the subject
3)Write notes when being instructed to do something
4)Coloured screen on your computer
5)Read with a coloured overlay
6)Sat Nav
7)If there is a particular word you cannot prounce practice it over and over again
8) Exams - write notes and re-write them time and time again9)Exams-learn your notes over and over again (like a parrot)
