I am now 27yrs old. But throughout school i always knew i had some kind of learning disability. things that were simple to most is still not simple to me. i never learned much math and didnt have a paitient parent at home to seemed that she even cared about my education. my grammar or my way of communicating is always being corrected and laughed at by co workers who seems very happy to laugh off my misery. Im even the subject of ridicule at work because i dont understand things alot or have bad memory. but they treat me as if i have done something wrong. yes i did drop out of high school because it was becoming apparent to me that i could go no further without any help. no our school system in detroit at the time showed no resources for that even though i spoke in private to a counselor about it. it has affected me in my adult life where im afraid of learning & socializing because you are treated horribly. i wasnt diagnosed with anything but my 3 year old has been diagnosed as autistic and wonder if it has anything to do with me and my secret. can somebody tell me what they think

Dear Erica,

The fact that you have dyslexia has not affected your ability to communicate. You are a good communicator. You’ve communicated very well that you are frustrated, fluster, angry, and very put-out by your coworkers, as you should be. There is help, and here is how you find it; call your community college, ask for their department that helps students with disabilities, make an appointment to speak with a counselor that specializes with students with disabilities. The people in this department are employed there because they have the resources and know-how to give YOU the help you need.
I can see how keeping this a “secret” may make you feel safe, (temporarily) but eventually you will feel isolated. I can tell you from my own experience; you can find help, but you must go to the help, it won’t come to you.
Best of luck,
From someone who has walked in your shoes.
