As a young child I was diagnosed with dyslexia. Here recently, I was diagnosed to have attention deficit disorder. I am now 54 years old. The doctor wants to put me on the medicine Ritalin. Has anyone used this medicine and found it to be helpful?

You know, dyslexia can be corrected for about $3,000 and you will rank amongst those relative few who have mastered this material world as a 2-D and 3-D thinker. I wouldn't trash the gift you have to prescription drugs. As the surgeon general confessed in a national interview, "all drugs have a side effect".

Check the library for "The Gift of Dyslexia". It's an easy read and you will find yourself in there. I'm the mother of a grown dyslexic daughter, she felt the book was talking to her. As well, turns out that my partner went to the workshop tagging along with me and he had quite a few symptoms himself. He started doing the exercises in the book and fully supports their methodology. I have no affiliation with DDAI but the program was developed by a dyslexic man who was an engineer but wanted full control over his reading and comprehension ability.

While you're at the library, check out "Gabby's Wordspeller & Phonetic Dictionary" that is now being used by dyslexic organizations and their directors. And...geez...be the envy of 75% of those other people who will never be able to do what you are capable of doing! smile!

I found a good site: http://www.akrongeneral.org/portal/page?_pageid=153,146423&_dad=portal&_schema=PORTAL

Copy past this.

I was reading the long list of symptoms. A few matched my aging life. I am 65 and I forget and suffer some depression. My doctors and I feel it is my age and the 34 hour on the book I am writting.

Since I cannot work, I have lost some of my controls. Do not need them any more.

Take care and get a second opinion.

Many people have found ritalin to be helpful. But it does have side effects for many people. Read about the side effects, try it, and see how your body reacts. Your doctor is probably not a dummy, and probably has good reason for suggesting you give it a try...

Good luck whatever you decide!

I use Adderall XR and it works great for me. I was also diagnosed with dyslexia as a child and didn't find out I had ADHD until I was 36years old. You may want to ask your doctor if ritalin is for people with ADD or ADHD. If he says both, ask how will it effect you since you don't have ADHD or you may ask for something that's just for ADD. While you're at the library, looking up the books that were recommended earlier, look up "Overcoming Dyslexia" it's by Sally Shaywitz. You can also ask the librarian if they have them on CD so you can listen to them.(I'd rather listen then read.) If they don't have them you can request them.
