San Francisco.

The largest smart card transit ticketing contract awarded to date in the United States was awarded to the ERG Motorola Alliance in 1999.The contract was to design, build, operate and maintain a fare payment system in the San Francisco Bay Area. In March 2001 ERG assumed full responsibility for the implementation of this project. Six operators will be involved in Phase I of the system, known as "Translink", which will commence in mid-2001 and involve selected buses, light and medium rail carriages and ferries. The travel routes have been selected to enable passengers to experience the benefits of an integrated fare collection system using a contactless card. The installation of equipment to be used during Phase I began in April 2001 and is expected to take three months to complete. The system will comprise over 1,500 pieces of equipment including card processors, add value machines, portable hand held readers, ticket office terminals and point of sale devices for use at retail outlets. The add value machines and selected card processors provide voice annunciation functionality in two languages to assist the hearing impaired. Keys on add value machines and some card processors include raised braille to assist the visually impaired.ERG has established a central clearing house to process transactions and settle payments between operators. Depot computers will provide each operator with statistical information about travel patterns on each of the routes they operate enabling them to tailor their services to best meet the needs of their customers. When fully implemented 26 of the Bay region’s major public transport operators will be participating in this ground breaking system. Some vehicles will operate on a tag on/tag off basis, where the fare is deducted at the end of the journey based on the distance travelled, others will involve a range of fare types including flat fares, passes, ride books and reduced transfer services.
