I don't think that men who aren't available for Worlds, should be permitted to attend the tour in Australia in place of Worlds squad members.
Here's why:
1. The worlds team is a development squad, and should be given the opportunity to develop. Giving an other team that opportunity is not supportive of those men who put their names forward for Worlds.
2. Men who want to play for NZ but don't want to go to Worlds, still have the opportunity to play for NZ- but in the year that we're not going to Worlds. For instance, every second year.
Now, before you start telling me about the need to develop domestic polo, don't even waste your time- you can't tell me that an International competition between us and Australia is about domestic polo. It isn't, it's about elite athletes. To further develop that argument, let's consider that we have a limited volunteer base and people are already working on the Worlds. It might annoy people who can't afford to go to Worlds, to miss out on this opportunity, but then if they can go to Australia they could have been attending the Squad camps anyway which surely would have developed domestic polo in the first place.
In my opinion, if the current Worlds squad wants to go to Australia, then tough bikkies for the guys that aren't in the Worlds squad. Too bad if you don't think that's the best team you can come up with, because they're not going to get better if you leave them on the sideline for players who haven't been involved in their preparation. I also think, that if only some Worlds squads members want to go, they should be automatically selected. After all, if those men have to contract themselves to the NZCPA, then the NZCPA can reciprocate the relationship and stop beating around the bush. Those players deserve to be given a chance THIS YEAR. This year, our priority for so called "elite" competitors, is Worlds. It arrived first, and it deserves priority.
I have mentioned these opinions to people on the board, but I figure I'll just put my opinion into the public arena.
Good luck to the Men's Worlds squads, and I hope you're getting some results from all the training.
