I though that I had better write a few words in support of the national league proposal and to clear up a few misconceptions.

Firstly why change an existing format that is so popular?
Well is 3 national tournaments and Inter-regionals enough polo to develop our polo players to become world champs?

History has shown that our players are not good enough to go into international competition and expect to win. Our players are
not match hardened to the same extent the Aussies and Europeans are. To get that experience we tend to travel overseas, this
is putting a huge financial burden on our elite players as well as excluding some. We need a National competition that will
provide the necessary high-level competition for our players to benefit.

Players are able to just form a team to play at the tournament/s with little need or real motivation to put the training in. By having
more regular focus polo (over a defined season) it is hoped that the players will train to combat/exploit particular teams
strengths and weaknesses.

Just because a format is successful doesn’t mean a revue shouldn’t take place to see whether there are better alternatives.

The proposed format for the national league:

*2 Island based leagues to be formed.
*Each team (club based) gets to play the other teams in the island on a home and away basis.
*There is flexibility for the Island to come up with a format that suits their situation.
*If there are more than one team in a region, double headers can be organised to cut down on travel costs.
*Once the island leagues are completed, there is a tournament held where the teams are ranked (i.e. North Island 1-6, South
Island 1-4). The top half in each Island play each other and bottom half do likewise in a round robin format. Thus we arrive at
the end of the tournament with rankings 1st-10th.
*At the second tournament the teams through a type of play-off format that allows the top ranked teams from the bottom pool
to win through to the final.
*The tournament venues were proposed as Wellington and Christchurch because Auckland had 2 national tournament last year
and geographical spread.
*The tournaments are also a vehicle for the B-grade teams to compete at a national level tournament (in B-grade) with out
having to commit to a national league.
*The regions will also be encouraged to host regional tournaments. There is no reason a National League meeting couldn’t
happen in the middle of a regional tournament as a showcase.

I hope this may help some people out there with a few of their concerns.

Thanks

James

ps I have heard that both Masterton and Hawkes bay are
concidering entering teams into this league? Looks as though the
B grade teams are gunning for the big boys.
