The pair of does were no longer grazing, and receptive optics flitted about, gazing for the reason of foreboding. Though they could not scent the individuals surrounding them, there were signs which they were experienced enough to notice. The once jubilant sounds of birds had suddenly quietened, though the cries of a few crows could be caught by ears. Sudden, unnatural snaps of surrounding foliage jolted the two herbivores, and they yearned for flight, their bodies remaining frozen.

Someone was watching.

The thick vapor in the air had shielded the scent of wolves from the elk. Though they had not bedded down, the herd seemed quite relxed, and unaware.

The wolves that had girded then undetected were now a threat. Tendons snapped and orbs swivelled about as the wolves made their descent. Three seemed such an minute number, and the elk seemed quite suspicious. The bucks circled the does, tossing heads and snorting their challange. The does backed into a rock wall, several emitting small sounds of concern. The injured doe backed into the depths of the pnd with two others, her instict urging her that water was the safest place to be. The pond was not very deep, but deep enough so that in the center wolves would have to swim.
The herd fidgeted warily among itself, but stood it's ground. These wolves did not seem to signal one another. The injured doe stood quietly slightly behind a buck of her same age, she waited, muscular legs half in, half out of chilled water.

Some of the older, more experienced bucks continued to stand ground, writhing elegant heads defiently. They knew what fate would await them should they stray too far from the safety of the herd. The group's numbers were still unknown. A young buck took a few steps forth, but with a close snap he retreated suddenly, hatred plain within his amber eyes.
The two does once frolicking had mixed into the herd, covering their scent. But a strong sickly odor was still emitted from the one, middle-aged doe. he could detect a slight watering of her liquidy orbs. She, however, was well protected. Her back to the pond, and a sturdy buck in front of her.
