In the dead of night. In the raging storm. While the murky water swirled past. As lightning striked the sky...

A foal was born.

His mother nudged him to his feet. She burned with a love that could never be dampened. Her quivering nose touched him all over. She crooned softly, licking his baby fur, cleaning him. Her eyes shone with happiness and love.

The tiny foal shook on spindly legs. He tripped towards his mother. Warm milk flowed down his throat, nourished him. Life and fire tingled down his veins. He looked into his mother's shining eyes. Starlight reflected in his. A small sound escaped him. A squeak. Lightning illuminated the foal. His hairs stood on end. Dark eyes glinted red.

The foal trembled with exhaustion and collapsed on the sandy floor. His downy hairs were like feathers. Smokey grey. A pink radiance danced on the baby hairs. Dawn on a stormy morning.

An image of his sire flashed though her mind. A stallion of the dawn. He had come as the sun rose over the mountains and left swiftly with the setting of the sun.

New life had come with the flood.

A smokey grey foal, shimmering with the dawn. A Rozella.

His name...Pearl.
