It seems that the debate on 1981 is going to be hotly contested on here by both sides! I appreciate all of the comments, however it is time for all of us to move on. It should be stated that because of their playing a 1981 show last year, I became a fan of Pablo Cruise, which I never would have if they had not played the countdown. Now, I don't know if that is a good thing or not........ and the more that I do think about it, it is probably more of the latter!

This discussion has led me to another question in my mind. The time frame is coming quickly in which artists who premered from that time will be up for induction into the hall of fame! And as much as I love 1980, 1981, and 1982, I seriously dobut that many of the artists who were prevelent during that time have any shot at ever making it to Cleveland.

Here is the ones that I can think of:

1) Prince: No brainer. And yes, I know that his first album came out in 1978, and, "I Wanna Be Your Lover" hit the AT40 in December in 1979, but for all intense and purposes, Prince's first big hit spent most of its chart run in 1980.

2)The Clash: Another no brainer.

3)Blondie: While I don't think that they will have as easy of a time getting in as the first two, I think that they should get in as well. And while they hit before 1980, 1980 was their breakout year.

4) Sugarhill Gang: I think they will get in, lumped together with other "pioneers" of rap music. It would make sense when viewing how the Hall has given credit to other pioneers of different forms of music.

5) Van Halen: I think they get in, also.

6) The Police: Their body of work might hurt them (not enough albums), but they have a good shot just by default!

Prince and Van Halen should be up for induction in 2003, so I'll be watching closely.

If these are the only ones that even are considered (and please add whomever you feel deserves it from the 1978-1982 frame), maybe this was the dry time for pop music critically. I don't think that artists such as Air Supply or Cristopher Cross have any chance, even though the charts might tell us otherwise!

But, I still love the music, whether it was great or not... give me Bertie Higgins and a bottle of Red Stripe any day of the week! And don't look now, but I'm starting to reach for some Pablo Cruise!
