prologue, an overview, if you will.

There is no hierarchy as such; just loose groupings of ad hoc “committees” who cooperate in achieving immediate goals that bear on the longterm objective. Their ultimate objective is a restructured society capable of reaching consensus on rational bases and acting collectively to achieve societal goals. They anticipate that such a society will be capable of ensuring the survival of mankind far into the future and across the galaxy, eventually. Our story begins shortly after this “organization” has begun recognizing its existence. Glass Eye was one of the founders of the movement some two centuries earlier, and exercises considerable influence over objectives and methods employed.

Current efforts are directed toward revealing the foolishness of the world’s dependence on fossil fuels and spurring research and development beyond stopgap measures such as wind and solar energy options. The longer term objective is to develop useful fusion reactors on both large and small scales. Anti-matter fuel, of course would be an even better source of energy, but that seems to be a problem to be left for future generations to explore.

In furtherance of the immediate end, though, it had been agreed that though the cost was high, the wind and solar programs which had finally replaced fossil fuels after a few tumultuous decades of wars and civil unrest were becoming inadequate for any further progress and that the only way to spur development of man-portable, independently operable power sources would be to increase the cost of wind and solar power sufficiently to make alternate sources highly desirable, even imperative.

The intrusion of the time machine, though, has upset all calculations and reduced mankind to a state of affairs much like the 1950’s technologically speaking. Society has, in effect, been shut down.
