This is another of those irreconcilable issues that strain the fabric of society to its limits.

From all quarters there is a belief that parents should be held responsible for the conduct and actions of their children, and again from all quarters there is a general belief that society has the authority to strip parents of the authority to rear their children according to their own beliefs. This woman is transfixed on the spot where those two beliefs intersect.

Nobody died and left me in charge, so while I would have acted on my own personal convictions had I been on the scene, I would have refrained from evoking the forces of "law and order" as being beyond their proper scope.

It is wrong to impose responsibility on the one hand and withhold authority on the other. If society is to act in loco parentis, it behooves us to be clear on that point; that ultimately, parents are mere caretakers of the state's children.
