The primary authors of the Constitution very much wanted to end slavery, but you know politics; the southern slaveowning states made it very clear that any prohibition of slavery would result in their refusal to accept the Constitution, and that would have resulted in each state remaining a sovereign little nation - easy prey for England and France to pick off one at a time. So they tolerated it by omission simply because they thought the Union was more important, and they expected that given time, they'd be able to get rid of slavery. It didn't work out quite as they expected, but we did.

Many people were mistreated back then - Jews were still very unpopular, Muslims were unheard of, and African religions were dismissed as sheer superstition. We've made a few improvements since then, I must say.
