Subject: Doctors are human but many think they are God. My friend could have died because of one doctor's inicompetence.

You've heard the expression "pill-happy"?

Many doctors and medical groups make more money by ENCOURAGING MORE VISITS and do so PRESCRIBING UNNECESSARY TESTS and UNNECESSARY (AND OFTEN DEADLY) MEDICATIONS.

I am not saying that all doctors are crooks. There are many GOOD ones out there. Those at places such as the Mayo Clinic are the very best.

But there are many doctors out there who are NOT COMPETENT and who act TOTALLY IRRESPONSIBLY.

I fully believe that there are many hidden deaths caused by UNNEEDED (AND IN MANY CASES INVASIVE) TESTS and MEDICATIONS PRESCRIBED WITHOUT CONSIDERATION OF SIDE EFFECTS.

There are some doctors that think they are GOD or at least MORE IMPORTANT THAN YOU.

I wish to share this with you.

The bottom line is ..... if you have any POTENTIALLY SERIOUS problem and it is NOT an emergency, then be sure to RESEARCH YOUR SITUATION and don't be shy about getting a SECOND OR A THIRD OPINION.

I have a friend who was almost put on a VERY DANGEROUS medication by a doctor. She went to him because of an "abnormal" result that showed up on a test.

Without knowing anything about her medical history -- which included kidney and liver problems and many drugs which could interract with this medication and possibly cause her to DIE -- and without even confirming that she definitely HAD the medical condition that "required it," he was about to have her start taking it immediately.

She wisely decided NOT to take it and instead went to a second doctor. That second doctor told her that it's a GOOD THING that she did not take it because, as he put it, "in all likelihood you would have become very seriously hill, based upon your medical condition and the medications you are presently taking." He also told her that if she started taking it, her quality of life would have been destroyed. She would have had to take it for the rest of her life and would have been told not to even go on a vacation.

Yet the first doctor, who was so irresponsible, is still of course practicing medicine. My friend is writing letters to the appropriate medical boards in order to hold the doctor accountable. They most likely won't work because there is a HUGE burden of proof and doctors are usually given the benefit of the doubt.

I am not going to identify myself here (I post only sporadically on this board). I will say I am not anyone whose name is on this front page. This is my first message in about 8 months.

My advice to any of you seeing a new physician, specialist or otherwise, is this .....

THINK TWICE before undergoing any unnecessary test or going on a medication which, in the end, may make you very sick or even kill you.

Ask questions. Do not be afraid to ask TOO MANY. An unwanted drug interraction can be LIFE-THREATENING OR FATAL. Any INVASIVE test is NOT WITHOUT RISK.

And if you have a doctor who is truly caring, knows what the hell he is doing and treats you responsibly and with the appropriate amount of restraint -- and does not ever perform unnecessary tests of prescibe unnecessary medication -- and only cares about keeping you WELL ..... then consider yourself blessed.

I hope this helps somebody here.
