Subject: Colgate gets new AD
Good news - Bad news. The Providence Journal reports that the Brown University Athletic Director, Dave Roach, has accepted a 5 year contract as new AD at Colgate. The good news is that the Patriot League gets some press and looks like the PL "stole" an Ivy League AD. The bad news is that Roach has had a horrible reputation at Brown. Some interesting quotes from the story:
"... Colgate University enticed him with an offer he could not refuse: the opportunity to direct a program with athletic scholarships in most sports; a football team that reached the NCAA I-AA championship game last December; a firm commitment to athletics from the administration; a five-year contract, and a financial package exceeding that of any job he pursued in recent years."
Also: "Roach said he was not being forced out by Brown's president, Ruth Simmons, or her vice president for campus life and student services, David Greene." And this: "Several years ago, a few Brown teams committed minor recruiting violations. The NCAA approved of Brown's self-imposed sanctions, but the Ivy League dealt football a harsher penalty by prohibiting the Bears from playing for the 2000 Ivy title. And a few years ago, several coaches complained to Gordon Gee, then the president, about Roach's management style."
On a personal note, I know people who have worked at the Brown AD and Roach is considered a first class jerk and has few friends/allies. The fact that he had to volunteer that he wasn't being forced out speaks volumes.
Good luck with this guy, Raiders!

Hmm... What's that tone I sense? -- colgate13, 08:15:55 06/25/04 Fri
(as posted on the 'gate board)
Is it bitterness? Envy? Ah... who cares?
Your opinion of his prior reputation means very little to us at the 'gate. First off, our hiring committee was not full of a bunch of idiots. Our president would not be hiring a "first class jerk" if she thought so.
Second, who thought he was a jerk at Brown? The faculty? Some underperforming coaches? Please tell! I can probably name a good number of people who thought that about our previous AD, but he apparently did a pretty darn good job! The ADs job is to advance the athletic department. Making friends is not a prerequisite.

Hmmm... -- HC1843, 08:23:30 06/25/04 Fri
Sounds like some 'gate posters can dish it out but can't take it.
Take the pill and swallow it...so the guy is not as squeaky clean as you would have liked to think, so what...
And if you do not think that a major part of the ADs job is to make "friends", facially or otherwise, then you are quite mistaken. ADs that step on the wrong toes do not last long, unless they are at schools like Ohio state where they call the shots, not the Presidents.
And if you haven't noticed, several HC posters on this board criticize our AD...it is part of the job to get hassled. I am sure your new AD is enough of a big boy that he doesn't need you defending him from a Projo article, or a HC poster's comments.
Cheers.

Re: New Brown Baseball Player -- NTKHC64, 08:43:09 06/25/04 Fri
While off the theme here,I'd like to mention that an incoming freshman at Brown is Ryan Murphy, an All Jersey Shore selection in baseball and a graduate of CBA-Lincroft NJ. He chose Brown although his father is a Colgate grad. I don't know if HC tried to get him.

Re: Colgate gets new AD -- sader1970, 08:35:18 06/25/04 Fri
I'm impressed that colgate 13 saw fit to respond to my post on BOTH the HC board and the Colgate board.
I'm not going to post my entire response back to 13 that I put on the 'gate board but my sources are wide and deep about Mr. Roach from the Brown athletic dept., president's office and HR department. If he wasn't "pushed", he jumped before he was pushed. I respect Colgate too much to think that they could have done much better.
For those on the board that are not Regan supporters (I am) - things could be a lot worse, we could have Roach as our AD.

thanks for the clarification -- colgate13, 08:52:08 06/25/04 Fri
no hard feelings.
It's just based on my sources you're making him sound much worse than we think he is. I'm suggesting maybe the problem wasn't Roach but rather the president, etc.
What's funny also is you're also giving the same description that a lot would have given about our last AD. He did just fine.
In the end, only time will tell! But I'd rather have Roach than Regan!

Re: thanks for the clarification -- sader1970, 09:14:43 06/25/04 Fri
Don't worry, 13, no offense taken.
And you may very well be right. Perhaps Brown was "too soft" and this guy is more "kick-ass" and that's what Colgate waants.
Having lived in Columbus when Gordon Gee was heading up Ohio State and then went to Brown (I live in RI), I was not surprised that Brown got into NCAA troubles. At the time, I attributed it to Gee's leadership as he is really focused on athletics and winning and rules violations was a way of life at OSU. He seemed to try to run Ivy League Brown like OSU. Then he bailed for Vanderbilt. The article implies Roach had responsibility for Brown's violations and certainly as AD, he has to take that responsibility. I'm still waiting for Vandy to be hit with violations now that Gee is there but these usually take some time to surface.
Just hope Roach/Colgate don't succumb to a win at any cost mentality.

Colgate won't succomb. -- Gate Raider, 00:05:02 06/27/04 Sun
Every year 'gate has athlete prospects in each sport that simply can't get by the admission's academic requirements not matter how hard the coach may try. 'gate's president firmly backs this policy. You may know that J. Branch the Peyton award winner last year and leading rusher in the nation had to sit out a year because his grades weren't up to par. The same thing happened this year to their second leading rusher who will return this year.

Why admit them in first place?? -- Dover, 11:15:39 06/27/04 Sun
If these players have had to sit out seasons due to poor grades, I'd suggest that they should not have been admitted to your fine university in the first place....

Some other thoughts -- colgate13, 09:56:26 06/25/04 Fri
From a Brown poster on the Ivy board:
"He hired some very capable coaches. He also put the University into a huge Title 9 litigation that should have never happened. He's been trying to get an AD position for some time out of Brown. He is incredibly thorough and intractable. His standards are high and he is a book and rules man. He was not universally popular with many coaches but he has accomplishment that weighs against his many detractors. He was highly selective in favoring certain programs and Colgate has a solid interest in his favorites; Football; Hockey and Men's Basketball. He is not a gregarious person but he is an intense, focused administrator. There are those who believe he is unforgiving and that includes coaches in other universities. He should be happier at Colgate where he has less sports to deal with and can create a fresh aggenda for himself. There will be no tears shed but he is not talentless and may just be the man for the Gate."

13, very interesting post which would not be inconsistent with what I've heard. Again, I hope he works out for you but watch out for all those bodies that will be littered around your beautiful campus.
