• Things had only gotten worse after he had arrived there. The smoke inhalation had caused his throat to swell almost to the point of closure and they had ended up having to insert a tracheometry and his lungs were damaged from the heat. • "You can see him now... But he's in and out of consciousness, and he can't talk anyway, and he's in a sterile environment so a nurse'll have to help you get dressed." • Finally, the nurse let her into the room and gave some final instructions about what she could and could not touch and how long she could stay, then left her alone... His eyes slid slowly open and shifted to find his visitor, but he didn't move otherwise. • Tears of relief and tender love welled in her eyes as she moved to him, almost afraid to touch him because she may hurt him. She shook her head, murmuring in Spanish softly before she shook her head, her voice choked "Scared the hell out of me baby..." "I was there for awhile before you came out and I was trying so hard to be calm but the building kept collapsing and I didn't know where in it you were...." As soon as she was gone, he allowed sleep to take over again - so exhausted he couldn't have kept his eyes open any longer if he had wanted to.. • She was just hoping the next time she got to see him, he woudl be able to at least talk a little bit - breathing on his own may make him seem a little bit less defeated. She closed her eyes as she laid down on the couch - though sleep was far from her. • He was out for the rest of the night and much of the morning - sleep doing well for him, but his check-up just brought news that he needed to stay in the hospital for atleast a couple more days and wasn't yet ready to come off the respirator....
