Subject: 85-70 Longhorns; I give UTA a "B" grade

Against a #12 team, not bad. Coulda been better, but we made them work for it quite a bit. Not much bench time or chances for the Longhorns to work on plays, etc.

UTA played fairly fearless at times, but turned the ball over a lot, missed a few layups and didn't do much outside. I thought we did a good job in the second half, turning a 25-point game or so into an interesting contest and making the Longhorns actually work for about 30:00 of 40:00 overall. We also played some decent defense, stealing the ball quite a few times.

A much better effort and more entertaining game than the games I've seen Coppin State or North Texas gave them on TV. TSU-SM lost by 30 to them earlier this year.

The Mavs got stronger as the game went on, and Posey showed why some UTA guards are gonna get a lot of assists over the next few years. I don't think smaller teams we'll see in the SLC can contain Posey and Thomas inside. Epps is quick but didn't really get rolling from outside, but it was very nice to see him start.

Neukomm still looks a bit lost at times and Dawkins made some nice passes but overall still has a one-dimensional game (please take a couple of twos or draw some fouls and keep the D honest). Howell was fearless and was a big part of the UTA run early in the 2nd half. Thomas looked good, Floyd made some nice shots and Griffin showed serious flashes of greatness. Henderson played some but didn't do much. But overall the Texas size advantage and rebounding was too much.

I didn't expect us to win and was getting worried at halftime that it might be a blowout...but I applaud the effort tonight and if we can cut the turnovers down a little bit, we've got a chance to make some serious noise in the SLC.

Also: I thought the coverage on FoxSW was very balanced, they gave us a lot of credit when we played well. Texas plays at Wake in a few days...I think the Horns are in trouble personally.
