hmmm....

Just finished listening to the new album…

A bands' third album [not including shopping trolley], is usually their worst work [look at oasis, the bluetones etc, ok they're not bad, but not the best] and Gomez are no exception. For those of you that don’t yet own the album, its still worth popping down to Sainsburys to pick it up for a tenner, but just don’t expect a 'Bring It On' or 'Liquid Skin'.
Some tracks really shine, like the opening single 'Shot Shot' and the easy 'Sound of Sounds', but on some tracks it seems as if they’re starting to lose it. In parts it sounds a little like the shit bits of Kid A, only not so bad. Like Kid A, they've used some bad ingredients to conjure up an album: like dragging songs on too long and using bass-pedals [anyone who uses a bass pedal should be shot shot], but all in all it’s a good album. If you’ve just been listening to the radio, you’ll probably think it’s good, whereas if, like me, you’ve spent the last few days listening to ‘Bring It On’ and ‘Liquid Skin’ in anticipation for the new LP, then you may well be disappointed.
Another thing to note, if you’re a hardcore fan like myself then you’ll have probably searched for Gomez live tracks in the days of Napster and found a beauty of theirs called ‘Detroit Swing 66’, a song which they played on an Austrailian radio station ages ago. If you downloaded it, you would have liked it and therefore will not really enjoy the new version, which includes worse lyrics [not simple like the old version which I felt worked really well] and a less catchy rhythm. Oh yeah, and some dodgy keyboards.
When ‘Liquid Skin’ came out I can remember half-singing ‘Hangover’ to myself in science and people overhearing me and saying ‘that sounds good, who is it?’. Can’t see that happening this time
I’ve got tickets for their Cambridge gig soon, I just hope it’s better live.

3/5
