Subject: Donated HDTV setup

I work for a public broadcasting station that goes digital
early next year. We were very lucky to get a HDTV home theatre setup donated to us: A JVC G-15 DiLA projector($900.00/1000 hour bulb), Panasonic Set-top HDTV decoder and a Panasonic DVHS recorder. It appears that the HDTV decoder sends the MPEG-2 stream via 1394 to the DVHS and the DVHS records the "stream" BUT in order to playback HDTV from the DVHS, it has to go back through the HDTV set-top decoder. The other "odd" thing is that the Panasonic DVHS will not record from a Panasonic DVC camcorder via 1394. With incompatability like this within the SAME brand, I can see why HDTV is not moving as fast as it should be. The reason this system was donated is because they could not sell it. The dates listed on the serial numbers are from 1999. But hey! It was FREE!
