There are 2 sorts of recording techniques:

1. From analog sources via MPEG encoding
2. From digital sources via bitstreaming

If you tape via bitstreaming, you have to use the datarate as it is broadcasted. So if is broadcasted with 4.8 mbps or higher, you have to use standard mode with 14.1 mbps (max 8 hours), because the "longplay" LS3 is limited to 4.7 mbps.

If you tape with encoding, you set the bitrate by yourself and it depends on the quality you want to record. With LS3 you can get up to 24 hours on a cassette (superior to the quality of S-VHS).

Modes with lower bitrates are not used today - the quality would be significant bad too. ;-)

Best are recorders with both bitstreaming and encoding technique, especially the new recorders with "D-Theater" because the can play pre-recorded NTSC HDTV videos.

Regards, Oliver
