Subject: Green Iguana Surf Camp - Costa Rica

I wanted to take a moment to review the Green Iguana Surf Camp in case anyone is considering attending this surf camp in Costa Rica. I arrived at their so called camp in December and found the camp to be run extremely poorly. The camp's version of transportation consists of a ride from the airport to the bus station where they drop you off in order to get you to Dominical. In addition to that, my planned surf lesson, the main reason for going, was set for the next day, only to be rescheduled three times because the "surf pro" was out surfing himself and then too tired at the end of the day to actually give a lesson. After rescheduling for the next morning, the "surf pro" arrived an hour late. When attempting to address this issue with the owner, he shrugged and said "the lessons have nothing to do with m e, you have to work it out with the instructors". The worst part, when I arrived home, I received a personally attacking, very cruel email from the owner because I had left without paying him the 3 U.S. dollars for the bus to the camp.

Anyway, I left the camp and took lessons from other surfers that were much better. If you're looking for an actual camp, don't try to skimp and save the money by going to GISC. You're better off spending a little more money and going to a more reputable camp where they care about you actually learning to surf as well as you as a person.

Wow are you way off base there girlfriend. I had the best time ever there on vacation. They were great! Our plane landed 6 hours late and the driver was still at the airport waiting for us. We called from the ariport in Toronto to let them know we would be late, and they were great. They even had a seperate driver for us and two guys who were comming an hour and a half after us. (If it was my camp I would of ask the first group to wait the hour and a half so they could go together)I go on vacation to relax I don't know about you, but I like not wearing a watch on vacation it's so freeing. All the trips we took they came and picked us up on time. They went out of there way to be nice and give you their time. They took me to the hidden waterfall two times in the week I was there. Basically on their own time. I also took the surfing lessons, and they were great! I would totally recommend the GISC to anyone. The only place in Dominical right on the beach. Waking up in the morning opening your door not 100 ft from the beach. Does it get better. The locals hang out there, everyone else from the other hotels hang out there (once again because it's the only one on the beach there) and at around 5pm everyday the tourists and locals sit on the beach to watch the sun set. Even the locals go everyday because it is the most beautiful I have ever seen. Because it is so close the eqator you get a double sun set. The sun is pink, red and purple at the waters edge, but the sky is still blue. then it goes too. Hard to explain you just have to see it. Go to something like google.com and look up Dominical sunsets. If you are looking for a regimented holiday perhaps this is not the place for you and you should attend a boot camp instead and leave the beauty of Dominical and the GISC to the rest of us to enjoy. I would go back in a heart beat. See you there.

Robin,
After reading your letter I was suprised that you had such a bad time. Everything was taken care of for me. Lillianna picked me up at the airport and took me to her hotel. It was simple and clean and she made us breakfast in the morning. She then took us to the bus station, bought our bus ticket, and sent us off. My wife was a little nervous about the san jose part of the trip but lillianna took care of us.
We traveled over a 10,000 ft. pass and arrived in san isidro de general and were picked up by johnny the taxi driver. He dropped us off at tortilla flats, great food and has a small bar where the locals hang out. It was dark when we arrived so in the morning when we woke up we were amazed at the landscape. The waves were big and Erin was pretty scared but our instructor Matt assured us that the beach we were going to surf was much smaller and more gentle. We went to dominicalito and it was great. I had a lot harder time standing up than Erin, but by the end of my second lesson I was popping up alot easier. The water temperature was to die for and the tropical landscape was so breathtaking. Not wanting to leave, johnny took us back to san isidro, bought our bus ticket, and lillianna took us to the airport from the bus station. Green Iguana Surf Camp was a great experience and we will definitely come back as soon as we can get away from our overbearing jobs.

I did the week-long new Angel's surf camp that's a sub-branch of GISC. More or less the same instructors, just a different housing sight, with a bit of a different focus.

Overall, a very good experience. Very memorable. Almost a perfect trip altogether. I would do it again.

I can definitely see where you might have had a bad experience. My first few days were incredibly unorganized. And I told them I was leaving. Then they became much more organized, though with the burst of spontenaity (from lack of planning) that really made the trip great.

They have the potential to be a REALLY GOOD surf camp. But I think they've been living in Costa Rica for too long and don't have the consistency, organization, and consumer-awareness that Americans expect. Sydney, Australia very much had the same problem. This doesn't make them a bad camp--like I said, I had a great time--but it does open the door for really bad experiences. They do seem to be working on that.

They now have a personal driver, Johnny, who is incredibly nice and reliable. He also drives a really nice, air-conditioned jeep. He'll bend over backwards to help you. A group of girls had an 8am flight, and so they thought they'd have to stay the night before in San Jose, which they didn't want to do because it's boring and expensive compared to Dominical. Johnny volunteered to drive them up at 3am the morning of the plane flight! Now that's dedication.

And Stephanie, ex-i-banker, is now their acting manager. She's pretty on top of things. Thank god they finally put an overachiever into that position.

Jason, the owner, is very pre-occupied with his young son, but he means the best. And when he's totally focused on you, he'll get things done. You just have to tell him to FOCUS.

The surf instructors, Matt and Sean, are the best instructors I've met yet. They are very good with explaining the basics, figuring out what you do wrong on each attempt, and staying with you. On the other hand, they do sometimes get caught up in enjoying surfing the waves for themselves and forget about you. Once again, you have to remind them to focus.

The "extra" activities are nothing special, and I doubt they'll become worth my time any time in the future. If you want a good horseback ride, try Finca Valmy tours in Manuel Antonio (the best I've had out of New Zealand, Australia, and the southern US). If you want a good zip line, try Monteverde. If you want a good massage, go to a real spa--Sea Glass Spa in Manuel Antonio is great.

What I do like about GISC that you can't get anywhere else: The town--incredibly friendly with a hippie, laid back, eccentric feel. Similar to Austin, TX. The people--you will meet the most interesting people here in concentrated form. EVERYONE has a story. You just have to ask. Jazzy's River House--GISC will take you if you ask. It's only open on Wednesday night, where they do a full 3 course dinner with drinks. Roca Verde--a surprisingly fun disco on Saturday night. Drinks are cheap, and the men surprisingly gentlemen-like, not at all like the sleazy feel of many Houston clubs. Almost wholesome, if you can call a disco that. The surprises--you have to prompt them. Jason took me to this beautiful waterfall that only the locals know about. We climbed to the top and jumped off the rope swing. Very cool. Eugene has a puma (rescue and release program) that he keeps in the mountain. We took the puma out of the cage and had lunch provided for us by a local family from their trout farm. Fresh fried trout and fresh squeezed blackberry juice. It doesn't get any better than that.

Hope this helps!

Hate to hear this kind of bad press from surf camps in Costa Rica. Check out www.thirdworldproductions.org . They represent two great surf camps and send their guests away friends.

Hello and good tidings!
It's been while since this thread was launched, but what the heck, it's better late than never to respond. I'm Jason Butler; owner, along with Karla, of Green Iguana Surf Camp in Playa Dominical, Costa Rica.
Robin:
I remember your visit, and the fact that you left unhappy. I'd like to apologize for the scheduling problems you had. We have always had high quality instruction at GISC; unfortunately, the instructor you had, while being a great teacher, did find himself fired over this as he was late almost all the time.
That being said, many changes have taken place in GISC over the last few years, and if you'd ever consider giving us another chance, I promise that you'll receive first-class treatment (and on-time instructors!)

Jason Butler
