It is true, I was vague about my opinion, but it wasn't because of any word choices of lack thereof in your post. Truly, it was because I wanted not to reach a definite opinion. I suppose this stems from the concern I feel that opinions seemed already so entrenched, so early in the discussion. I guess I was hoping that a little more tentativeness would be expressed for awhile longer.

In my experience (and I admit to being an older poster), once we announce an opinion, we seem to become transfixed...unreceptive to further input...to put the issue away in our minds never to be questioned again. Not always, of course, and certainly not by many of the intelligent, open-minded people who visit this board, but often enough that it worries me. As a result, further dialog, consideration, discourse, even courtesy and respect, stops. Instead, we choose sides and argue. Period.

I like not being certain of how I feel about this issue. I like that my opinion is very loosy-goosy on this topic. It is way too big an issue to be decided in one day, one year, even one life-time. Yet, we feel such a strong urge for closure that we succumb to our internal pressure to form an opinion. I wish we were more comfortable continuing with our internal questioning on such important topics and never reaching a conclusion.

For me, it's that pesky tolerance-for-ambiguity thing. The older I get, the grayer things become (no pun intended) and the less certain I am that my view the world is unimpeachable. So every year, my tolerance for ambiguity is stretched a little further. I'd like to think this is a sign of maturity, not senility :-) Who knows?
